I wanted to finish my sequel to the gift I gave Bartre last year. But had a family crisis which resulted in me having to move. I will finish it for 2017 though, and I demand Bartre share his 2015 gift for Christmas :)

I just got to test out my Genesis Retrovision cables on a Trinitron KV-27FS13 and a VA3 Model 1 I previously had modded my system for SVideo and the difference is amazing. I hate to compare it this way, but the image is so sharp and clean it looks like an emulator running on a CRT monitor.

(If you actually read my post and the sympathetic replies then I can't see how "trolling" would come to mind. I really meant what I said. I'm not acting up for attention or to piss you off. I really think the "fear of failures" is directly responsible for the lack of diversity in consumer electronics.) <- This is good and I totally agree, we see the same thing in other forms of entertainment.

(Apparently I'm just speaking a language you don't understand.) <- Come on really? Its ok we can kiss and make up and have a TG-16 slumber party.

(The TG-16 and the Duo in particular were much bigger failures than the 32X from the perspective of US sales. That's partially why I find it odd you bring this up here.)

What separates the TG-16 and similarly the Sega Master system to me from the 32x and the other mentioned failures was that they still found success elsewhere. They're also both systems that I don't recall being widely criticized for their hardware plans. There are minor things I'm sure people were not happy about like shelling out for a turbo tap or having the pause button on the SMS.

I guess well see how everything worked out when the 9th generation of consoles start, unless it starts with the NX

Quote from: SignOfZeta on 09/09/2016, 08:55 PMFuck, I hate this post. This obsession with "failures". WTF is a failure? LD? LD was *the* premium video format for 20 fucking years. Is that not good enough? Sure the sales weren't amazing, but that's because it was a premium format. Most people don't buy premium anything. Now there are no premium formats and soon there won't be any formats at all. Therefore, none of these "failures" you hate so much. Just...iPhones and things that look exactly like iPhones. Paradise, right? No more risk.

As NecroPhile says, many of these "failures" flopped for completely different reasons and without understanding the context it's a meaningless distinction.

I wonder how far into the future people will cite the 32X as some sort of illustrative lesson. It's already more than 20 years old. When I'm buying my holochamber 64 in 40 years will some wiki-smart guy say, "Dude, remember the 32X? This is just like this. It will fail".

I'm sure at least one guy who blew $700 on a 3DO died in a car crash or something the next week. He never lived long enough to see the thing flop out, it was the hottest shit on the planet for what ended up being the rest of his life. Is his enjoyment negated because of the 3DO's massive failure?

I don't even know what these new systems are, I just think the question is played out and pointless. What's fun is fun. This is a fucking PC Engine forum after all. You'd think anyone who would bother with joining wouldn't ask such a question.

Also, I find your comedic portrayal of drug addition to be distasteful.
I had a Virtual boy back in the day, and bought one again. I traded my first for a TV so I could have two TV's in my room and be the cool two TV kid. I have and enjoy the 32x as well.  My point in bringing them up along with the Go, as they are commonly seen as failures, despite what or why exactly they failed. They failed because of bad ideas/planning.

I could have brought up this topic years ago, and said. "Wii-U, I'm not exactly on board with this name or the design, I think the general public is going to be confused, what are your guys thoughts?"

For these console upgrades I'm just asking about other people's thoughts because having a major hardware upgrade in the middle of a console cycle is not something I'm used to and I'm tried and successfully created a discussion. Are you really grumpy about this, or are you just trolling?
#6
I agree, I'll use the game Destiny for example.

Destiny was made for PS3/Xbox 360/PS4 and Xbox One. And outside of how well the game was received. It was hindered because the content/gameplay had to work on all the systems, outside of just downgrading the resolution for the older systems. You had to make sure the enemy encounters and maps would provide the same experience on old systems so you couldn't use the 8th gen systems to their full potential.

Looking back at hardware ideas like

The PSP Go

IMG

The Virtual Boy

IMG

And the 32x

IMG

We ask ourselves, didn't they see this wasn't going to work out? And I'm not saying these decisions were planned with failure in mind, just that maybe they were overlooking the reality of things.

Planning a future on these systems is like planning a future with a trashy girl.
IMG You ignore a lot of the crap hoping things turn out right, but then she becomes a wreck and years later, you're like... the signs were there why did I ignore them?

The main question, will the mainstream embrace the 4k standard in the next few years. Or will it be something like DVD to Blu-Ray, a very slow transition.

In the states we skipped the VCD, and the laserdisc didn't take off. DVD's took off for many reasons. The PS2 helped that. But even Bubba Bo Johnson, could see the difference from VHS to DVD, and he didn't have to remember to worry about rewinding the videos before returning them. Likewise from a SDTV to an HDTV big upgrade in visual quality and less bulky. But Blu-ray never really exploded. Like a stray cat, it wondered in and we gave it some attention and after some time we realized we have been with this cat for like 10 years.

Now, I'm not condemning the upgraded PS4 and Xbox One. It might be what is needed. It may be like the more successful Ps3 Slim and Xbox S that found wide success during the 7th generation. I'm just looking at what it has to offer. I'm thinking not enough people will adopt a 4k system this generation to make exclusive 4k popular. Eventually they may just standardized them and drop the 1080 systems, but it will be too late because a lot of people will stick with their older models to cut out development.  So why not just wait till 9th gen? Could this also be the case of, well if we don't do it our rivals will?

I just want to know what you guys think about these upcoming systems.

Some recent game pickups, and goodwill pickups that I will cycle into games.

Ivy the Kiwi was a 35 BIN. The price on this game is soaring, I've had an open backorder of 4.99 for the game @ gamestop for 8 months now. I expect them to raise the price on this game and then finally have copies "appear" in their inventory just so can cancel my order around that time.

Paid 28.01 for these at goodwill. My friend got a bag of 8 as well for 20.26. I knew they had value, but didn't realize how expensive some of these get.

General Gaming / Re: Bloodstained E3 Demo
07/02/2016, 09:21 AM
I backed the kickstarter trinity. Mighty No. 9, Bloodstained, and Shenmue. Out of all the various long running series I realized Castlevania, is one that I have every game for in some port/form without purposely trying to complete it. I've also finished most of the 2d games.

I started the Bloodstained demo up, and the whole "mood" of the game felt right, the music, the game play. And it wasn't until I tried equipping my second soul power in the sub menu that I looked at the close up portrait of the character and remembered that this wasn't an actual "Castlevania" game.. I had completely forgotten.

Also if someone didn't mention it, Kung Fu shoes are a weapon. I kept them equipped on my play through to kick those big boss breasteses until she fell into the sea.

For backers you can go back into your survey link and change your choice on what platform of the game to receive. The MM9 Wii U port of the game has me worried about how well Bloodstained will run, even though it should be able to run it just fine.

As a reminder to those that are getting physical kickstarter rewards. From the description it seems that the game itself won't have a kickstarter variant, just the slipcase.

Quote from: MNKyDeth on 06/12/2016, 03:07 AMGreat Episode, I am curious if they were limiting themselves to 8 and 16 bit consoles though?

I mean, most of the games that were cd based in this generation had incredible music I thought. But when you go from some poor 8bit Nes stuff (granted some is good) to a full featured redbook cd-audio it's really hard to go back.

But then I just end right back at Ys 1&2 because this is one of the first games on CD I ever heard and I was immediately blown away until I heard Gate of Thunder that also came with my TurboDuo. I really couldn't get enough of either one of them at the time.
You just need the right guy doing the music

Expect this game to have a cute whimsical opening.

No, Follin don't care, he'll set the atmosphere to awesome and give you this.
Even when you go 1-bit. Follin don't care, he don't give a shit about limitations.
And when a game is cancelled by the publisher. Follin don't care, it doesn't stop his music

Quote from: wilykat on 06/18/2016, 05:47 AMI used to buy mystery PSX but quit buying a few years ago.  I have around 30 right now and only 2 had problem reading discs.  I figure if I sit on this pile long enough I can sell it for about 10x what I paid (mostly $5, often with video cord and controllers)

Right now I have 2 other consoles that needs something.  A PS3 with YLoD and XBox360 with RRoD. Both has no video out.   Both were cheap.  $20 for PS3 with 80GB HD, the fat one with 2 controllers, and $30 for 360 with cables, 3 power supplies (dunno why) and 3 controllers, no HDD.

SO what to do with them? Could sell controllers, 360 cables and 360 power supplies.
I would just junk the 360, even if you fix the RROD the solder is brittle, the xclamp flexes the board causing issues, and the whole series of Fat 360 were just band aids fixing things along the way. Its just too unreliable to fix and resell, since it can have issues a few days after fixing. On the other hand if its for yourself, its real quick to pop the system and hit it with a heat gun. Outside of that its not worth the time to reball/re-solder the system while the slims are so cheap.

Out of all the people I knew with a fat 360, none of them have their original system. They either had to send it back to Microsoft or bought a slim when their warranty ran out. Even my own system which was a Falcon I babied, I kept it in a cool area, didn't go on gaming marathons with it and it still crapped out.

At flea markets, I have sellers try to push 360 on me all the time. I don't have interest in them anyway since I have a slim that I barely use now. If you or anyone else is in a similar situation you can learn how to check if its a Jasper fat 360. http://www.360-hq.com/xbox-tutorials-81.html#jasper afaik they are the last revisions to the fat design and will be the most durable against the RROD.

After breaking up with my fiancee (different priorities in life I had just started classes at UF and she wanted to move to Cali and start life in Hollywood). I was 195 @ 5'10, stalky build. My exercise was limited to home weights.

I switched to diet drinks and started running on a treadmill 2 days a week. In 3 months I had lost 30 lbs.

About two years later I started going to a gym on campus with a friend. (I'm not a person that prioritizes heavy lifting or considers lifting ability the end all to fitness. It's just the only stat that I have remembered after all this time.) But I was benching around 150 at my max and working out with 115-135. When I first started.

As the first year passed I continued to get stronger and more lean. I was just hanging out with friends and non of us were doing any research on eating, or reps, and just did a few different things in the weight room. While that way of working out isnt the best. It had two critical things that helped the most important factor was going with friends. It was fun hanging out and rotating in and out it let us get rest as well as not slack off and kept at a consistent rate of visits each week. My weight was 177 lean. And my bench was peaking around 200.

A guy from my work was a competitive bodybuilder and one day he offered to look at what I was doing during the week and see what advice he could give. He said I was benching too much (3x a week, and not complementing my work out with other exercises. Mainly my legs) He had me doing a more well rounded work out as well as benching once a week and dropping to a weight that I can do 5 sets of 5 at and adding 2.5 lbs to each side once I do that on the following week.

By the end of the summer I was back to 187 lbs still lean and benching 260 and by the end of the year I was able to max out at 6 Cadillacs (315) thats what the black guys in the gym say. Eventually school fun ran out and we all graduated, people moved away and I just kept the habit up, 2x a week.

The point of all this is, back before all this started I was a chubby guy that collected video games and today I'm a guy who feel asleep playing dukes of hazard on the gameboy color last night because I didn't want to be bored while taking my nightly dump and brought it to bed with me. Today while on my lunch break I had Game Sack playing on my phone. I'm basically the same guy I just cut out excessive food that was bad and got casually consistent about getting exercise and it made a world of a difference.

Often times people want to rush into weight loss and its very difficult to go all in. If your a soda drinker make a push to low calories drinks, after a few weeks that "diet taste" you'll likely prefer the taste of them than to sugary drinks. If you're eating fast food all the time don't go all salad. Do a slice of pizza and a salad instead of two slices. Instead of a burger and fries do a burger and salad.

Make the gym a fun activity, even if you are going solo you can check out girls/guys and watch some Game Sack on your phone.

totally forgot about these guys, I probably would have picked up Saturday Morning RPG, but at least SÖLDNER X will be available soon. For those of you who don't have a PSTV, Walmart had these on Clearance for 19.97 and the Controller bundle ones for 29.97. Unfortunately you will have to check in store and it probably won't show up on brick seek. I picked up two a little while back and still saw them sitting in cases a 2 months ago when I checked. Most staff won't know what they are or what they look like. I only met one Walmart employee that knew what I was talking about when I mentioned Playstation TV.

Note that the box is small and will likely be in with the bottom of the Walmart glass case with the vitas or other sony hardware.

Quote from: technozombie on 02/05/2016, 01:19 PMSince those game are available in English through the Sega CD, it makes much more sense for hackers to put their effort into completely unlocalized games. Xanadu 1/2, anearth fantasy stories, and emerald dragon to name a few.
I somewhat agree with this, but you can't deny that Snatcher keeps coming up as a major topic time and time again. At the very least it shows that there is great demand for a translation, even if an English version does exist in the form of the Sega CD. The problem is, regardless of public demand you need to get stakeholders to buy into the idea (Ie. people with the talent who can do translation patches), and it seems most just go "play the Sega CD version".

Considering how often the subject comes up, I would have assumed someone would have just done it already to get the monkey off the translation scene's back. It would stop the Snatcher topic from coming up again and again, plus it would make (I would think, in my humble opinion) a large portion of the PCE community very happy. Not that they are owed anything, but just to say that the effort would be sincerely appreciated and not gone to waste.
We did get the translated Rondo of Blood even if those had pesudo ports. (snes/psp)

Space Adventure has started to gain in popularity and has tripled in price in two years. Maybe the stupid game chasers and alpha omega sin helped carry that along.
Of the two, Snatcher has several changes the big one being censorship, and Space Adventure Cobra? Not much? It's one of the rare games of that time that managed to get the nudity across intact.

With the Sega community resources it probably easier to edit the censored changes on the Sega Snatcher than to translate the PCE one.

We have one of these machines at my work, cost us about 10,000 originally. Does 50 disc batches. I provide IT support for 13 library branches and our movie and music checkouts often come back damage or just need a rebuff after it passes through 50 different people.

RTI Eco Master
IMG

JFJ (Avoid using on expensive discs)
IMG
The JFJ runs 130 on amazon, while the lowest single disc Rti machne is 1600

A Rti can resurface some nasty scratches and make the disc look brand new. The only way you can really tell if its been resurfaced on one of these high end machines is to look for white polish paste residue that gets left behind sometimes or check the center ring. If a disc gets scratched up a lot usually the center ring does too and that does not get polished.

Most mom and pop game stores have the JFJ. I would recommend against using it. I visit a lot of game stores through out the year and I have yet to see a JFJ that leaves a disc looking new. While it can buff out scratches you still get very very light swirl marks.  Now this may be because people stretch the pad life and maybe a new set of pads will get it looking new, but I haven't seen it. I'm not trashing the JFJ, it can get non working games working again. But for anything expensive I would find a store with an eco master resurfacer and pay the 3-5 to get it looking new again. Our machine has a very light setting and we can resurface a disc many many times.

I don't know the average limit since the resurfacing machine is used by cataloging. But my friend in that department has said they have discs that have gone through more than a dozen times. That's another concern with the JFJ that multiple rebuffs will come out more and more uneven. I've actually bought a few dollar priced "pricey" games from JFJ owners that couldn't get them working and had them run through our eco master and they worked afterwards.

This is an example of one of the machines, is also just happens to be a sister store to a local store
here.
Damage such as see through pinholes, disc rot, flaking, or deep dents are unable to be resurfaced.

I first played it when it came out so that wasn't it. The issue is that I had already played or played at about the same time, in the same arcade, Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, Renegade, P.O.W., Street Smart, etc and Final Fight doesn't do anything those games didn't do and often it does less. It just has big sprites. It's a high end Crest of Wolf.

Hagar is mayor. I have to admit that's pretty cool.

Of all the arcade games that I enjoyed there are two games that I felt empty about what we had for ports.

Shinobi
Ninja Gaiden
Rastan Saga

While I was exposed to subpar ports like Final Fight snes even if I was in denial up until I opened it on Christmas morning that it was just single player. At least passable options existed on the Sega CD. The PCE Shinobi while the best port of the time is still lacking a little too much. Same with Rastan Saga, and while Ninja Gaiden on the nes is my favorite nes game, The arcade game was always what I wanted to play as a kid.

When were you at 2nd and Charles in Gainesville, it hasn't been opened that long. I live next door to that one, we could have hung out and thrown rocks at people.

The good and bad of 2nd and Charles, since its not a dedicated game store, they will miss variants or different versions of a game. They also do a quick check at prices when they scour the internets that can cause them to price things high or low. They have a free bin, so if they can't get something to work etc, and the person doesn't take it you might be able to find some nice games that need and alcohol wipe or a rebuff.

You can trade in books/cds/movies. My dupes/various items that don't get traded online or sold online ill funnel to 2nd and Charles. However they don't itemize your trade value, and its real easy for someone to scam the system. Lets say you bring 15 items in trade, the person taking in the trade will offer the value of 14 items and the employee will keep the 15th item for themselves.

From the Gainesville one ive gotten good deals on some sega master system, and mispriced wii/ps1 games.

I went to one of the stores near Atlanta and it had a lot of good things. Best bet is to trade in junk to get something good even if it is ebay price.

Its just another way to play a game. I occasionally will watch a speed run after I beat a game to see how certain challenges were dealt with. Its interesting to see how much difficulty changes in some games just by approaching a enemy or boss with your character facing backwards. In such that you can move faster, or enemies wont attack..etc

I also hasn't really surged like a lot of other nes titles since 2012.

I didn't recognize it as MIMP, does it have any notable identification marks on it. MIMP had a number that indicated their power level.

Quote from: SamIAm on 03/20/2016, 08:47 PMMy two-cent armchair retrospect strategy for Sega in 1994 would be to can the 32X and the Saturn both. Sony's Playstation was just too well-designed to take on directly with anything, let alone the mess that the Saturn was. Instead, drop the price of the Genesis and the Sega CD as low as possible to ride out the storm until 1996, then release a system with the processing power of the N64 and the CD storage of the Playstation. And have a damn 3D Sonic game ready at the release.
I agree that it was a bad business move to release the 32x. But holding out against the Playstation, probably wouldn't have worked. The added resources of not releasing the 32x could have aided a more 3d friendly Saturn design or at least a Sonic game on release. Further the Saturn did well against the Playstation early on in Japan.

Sega also had foothold in the gaming world with Sony being the newcomers. Sega led console sales in 1992 over Nintendo. Their demise was largely attributed to their own doing (see Atari 1983, Nintendo 1996, Sony 2006 E3) As much as I enjoy the Sega CD, and 32x, those combined with the rush release of the Saturn really hurt them during the 5th generation.

-Black Tiger (Nintendo did quite well 7th Gen winning home console sales overall with the wii, and they are still king of handhelds, the DS was even more successful than the Wii, selling more units than the Playstation 2 in the US.

Quote from: SamIAm on 03/16/2016, 10:44 PMThe 32X is one of those things that, in death, manages to be forgiven of its sins.

In 1995, it was utterly ridiculous, but these days, if you're a Genesis fan, picking up an old 32X and some games for cheap is a gateway to a hell of a weird and fun experience. Tempo and Knuckles Chaotix are the crowning games on the system thanks to their mid-90s Sega gaudiness that I honestly enjoy quite a lot.

In addition, Space Harrier is a rock-solid classic, Kolibri is a great game to show guests and go in for 2P simulteneous, Shadow Squadron is a surprisingly decent early 3D game with a nice framerate, and Blackthorne, while not my personal cup of tea, has its best port on the 32X.

Mortal Kombat II is arguably just as good or better on the SNES, though - better music, better backgrounds, and no loss in gameplay. The 32X port only has slightly nicer sprites and cleaner voice samples.
Double agreed, good post.

The 32x is still dirt cheap for a "new platform" for someone to get into. I still see them unit only for 10-20. Before that was a pain because the link cable was running more than the system was on ebay but now that replicas are being made you can save $ by finding a bare unit. But you can still pull system with cords for 60.

I only have 16 of the 37 games, but outside of the commonly mentioned Star Wars Arcade, Kolibri, Knuckles Chaotix. The 32x ports of the 16 bit games are usually enhanced versions of their 16 bit counterparts. After Burner, Mortal Kombat II, NBA Jam, Blackthorne (has extra levels) Space Harrier, Star Trek Starfleet Academy. And while some of these games saw Saturn and Playstation releases, you don't get the load times.

And to answer the topic question.

I do like it, and SamIam's statement sums it up fairly well.

The allure of the 3d era was heavily being pushed when the system came out. Graphics were still a high priority for game quality, and hearing speech in a game was a treat. Sega was just coming off their prime Genesis years. And my friend and I rented a 32x along with Star Wars arcade from Blockbuster. It was one of those experiences you tried to force yourself to like, but knew in your heart wasn't that good. My nephew got one from Software Etc when they were marked down to like 29.99. And I still thought it was crap.

Years later, my perspective changed, like many others. I no longer judge the system against a Saturn, or Playstation, and Instead look at the games for what they are, Year one games on a patched together system made out 90's tech patched on to 1988 hardware. Now I see the library as being interesting and fairly decent overall. The 32x also addressed some of the criticism that the Genesis received, enhancing the sound and color palate capabilities.

It would have been interesting if 32x came out a few years earlier and was built into the Sega CD. Even some modern homebrew would be interesting to see.

Checkout what's been made on the Genesis (pales to the original PC, but very impressive for the genesis)
A Comparision, notable difference when youtube video is full screen.
