Many you guys know I've pursued to achieve a complete US Turbo collection (all 141 complete with game, case, manual, and outer box). It's fun collecting and hunting these suckers as it is playing them and decided to share my "fun" with you guys.

This thread tracks my journey as I countdown the number of games starting between me and my goals.

So far my collection has grown 70 games! And growing.... :D (Only 71 to go!)

I know I've should added this in my original post. But with finals and project over and down with, I have free time to catch up on my personal project and what not. So expect a daily dosage of updates for a good while.

Managed to spot these new: Retro Game Spot The guy apparently has a stock of them as I've already bought one of each from him. So if you looking to fill a couple of holes in the collection or want to get your hands on fresh, new games without shelling an arm or a leg, send the guy your best offer. I'm sure you guys can give them a home.

For a moment, I thought that '78' and '79' was what you paid for 'em, which would've been an arm or a leg. Silly me. #-o

Just out of curiosity, what titles are you including to get to 150 that aren't listed on PCE Daisakusen!! (146 total) and PCEngine Catalog Project (145 total (Bikini Girls isn't listed with a region))? I suppose you could count the pack-in version of Ys seperately, include Meteor Blaster DX: Signature Edition, and count whichever game came with black and red labels separately (Champions Forever Boxing perhaps?), but that's still not 150. :-k

 It was miscounted and I have your signature to thank, Necro. When I first saw that number, I naturally assumed it how many official Turbo games released in the US excluding the Implode, Meteor Blaster DX, and Y's pack-in for the Turbo Duo.

Now I've recounted everything (94 for HuCards, 44 for CDs, and 3 for everything else) for a total of 141 games and need to recalculate my numbers. Actually when you think about it, my countdown now starts AT the halfway mark! Thanks for the heads up, Necro.

hoobs88

I made my own checklist from PC Engine Catalog project and ended up with 150 titles which includes: Hudson Music Collection 93, CD + G disc, second variation of Ys, Lords of Thunder demo (VHS), Meteor Blaster, Implode, and 3 "bikini girl" games.
150 seemed to round things out nicely and easier to remember than 141. My countdown is 19 more to go!

This seems goofy, considering that there are two (or three) versions of the CD+G disc, other promo videos besides just the Lords tape, M.B. DX:SE, and the two versions of the aforementioned game. To each his or her own though; when it's your own private collection, you can say it's complete whenever the heck you want.

I just noticed that your signature says "US collection 66% complete 97/147 titles".
What are you considering for the 147?

My own special formula is the 146 listed on PCE Daisakusen!! plus Meteor Blaster DX: Signature Edition, which I include because its code slightly differs from the normal version (and I already have it). I might revise my total someday to include both versions of Ys, 'cause I'd like to get the retail version for a proper case and sexy maps.

Tail Spin....68 (complete w/ box)

/p1010182ir3.jpg/p1010183bp4.jpg

I remember getting off the bus, running straight up to my room, and tuning in to the most magical 2 hours for any kid to experience: The Disney Afternoon. Ah, the memories...Duck Tales, Rescue Rangers, Tail Spin, and Darkwing Duck. That was the best mix. Every show was as imaginative and memorable as the last. Actually the same can be said for any cartoon from our childhood. Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Beetlejuice, X-Men, Batman, Mario, Sonic SATAM, etc. We had our own world to ourselves and it was great. :D

Too bad the quality of most cartoons today are substantial at best with a few exceptions (i.e. Avatar <- BTW awesome show!)

Yes, there was supposedly. It was put on auction and dubbed "The Holy Grail" by seller. Sold for a GRAND, more than Dynastic Hero and Magical Chase combined.

Man nice collection. I was thinking about doing this myself. However my funds are limited, then I thought about how I really just buy games I play. There are quite a few Turbo games that are really bad and I would never put my money into them. Even if I was collecting. Anyways you have a great collection and I hope you reach your goal. BTW where in the hell are you finding these boxed games? Is it just ebay or stores near you? Garage sales? Just curious.

Sparky

very cool man... and look at you going for the boxes as well... thats a harder task for sure!!!

i completed my Tg16 huey card collection awhile back (well almost-missing a few manuals) but never went for the boxes, in my eyes its complete :P Those boxes are the worst for storing and finding them in decent shape, i have a some but hells i gave up awhile back. Anyway all the best on your pursuit.....make it happen!!! :D

I don't think the Lords of Thunder demo (VHS) is counted As A game. And also I have never been aware of any demo disks that where released for the Turbo Duo,Turbo Grafx 16+cd.Not unless I can be proven other wise.I guess you could also count the unreleased Fantasy Star Soldier,But thats hard to come by.

Parasol Stars: The Story of Bubble Bobble III....66 (complete w/box)

/p1010186ee6.jpg/p1010187yz8.jpg

Ah...Working Designs. :D :D :D :D :D
Alundra was the first game I bought from them, but wasn't hooked til Lunar 1 & 2. When I saw that packaging, it stood out a glittering sapphire. The quality was superb from the behind-the-scenes extra right down to the hard-cover booklet. On top of that, they brought over great, underrated niche classics (i.e. Popful Mail, Arc the Lad, Magic Knight Rayearth, etc.) that most "companies" wouldn't dare touch with a 10-foot pole. No matter what big or difficult the task, Victor Ireland will see to the end. They were the best friend any gamer would want.

Parasol Stars was the first game they released here. Judging by Hucard art and manual, the quality was superior to most (if not all) Turbo games prior to it. And you knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, they defined quality in the video game industry. It was very sad to hear my favorite company had to close down on 2005.

Nowadays, Atlus acts as WD's spiritual successor. They continue pumping niche classics, never afraid to get down and dirty. I'm grateful to them and all the work they put through. But they can never fill WD's shoes left in this gamer's soul. Working Designs may you rest in peace and pray, like the phoenix, you will rise from the ashes and mark your brilliant and fiery return. [-o< [-o< [-o< :-({|=

Turbo grafx are hard to find in the wild, especially boxed games. Half of my collection comes eBay and the other from fellow game collectors and players. Like you, I can't always snatch up the first thing I see. I only commit large funds when I find a hot deal that I can't pass up. Otherwise I dismiss myself when the price get too high.

Here's the 3-in-1 store demo. I thought Mr. Nanto had some better quality footage up somewhere (maybe it's in a PCEFX TV episode or maybe I'm full of shit), but this is the best that I can find now. I've yet to see video of the Lords o' Thunder demo, but it's been listed on several reputable sites, including PCECP. Since BT probably owns a copy (along with a copy of pretty much everything else), it's probably safe to say that this demo also exists.

Persona 4 is an addicting game. It took the entire Christmas break to beat it, logging in many, many, MANY hours. I recommend for any RPG fan looking to get into the more recent games.

Speaking of RPGs, Dungeon Explorer is next on the countdown. Played it a few times, don't know if it my cup of tea. Only time will tell. The artwork is another story. DAM! It makes the Megaman cover art look like the Mona Lisa.

It incredible how cheap and lazy NEC handled advertising their products especially with their lackluster cover art and bland HuCard art design. I wonder if they given more attention to this, would they have saved themselves?

Space Harrier....63 (complete w/box)

/p1010204vw0.jpg/p1010205ve6.jpg

DOUBLE WHAMMY!!!

Been far too long since I added anything to the countdown. Decided to deal a delightful dish of doubly do-gooding daringness. (trying saying that ten time fast. )

With discussion about the Genesis and Turbo resurfacing, these two games seemed appropriate as they are children of Sega for a Turbo gaming system. I always find it strange how companies in the hardware gaming market find themselves on different systems. That's like finding Mario and Zelda on Xbox or the Playstation. Then again Nintendo license them for the Philips CD-I and Hudson still released their Bomberman franchise on Nintendo. SNK, parent of the Neo Geo, ported many of their money-making titles to the Super Nintendo, Genesis, and Sega Cd. So, I guess the practice of it wasn't all too uncommon yet it is peculiar these companies resort to their competition to boost sales. :?:

Off-topic: wasn't Altered Beast released on the PC-Engine and the Sega Genesis?

geise

Yes Altered Beast was released on both systems. The pc-engine got it in Hu card format and CD format.

Nice grabs Press_Run. :) Space Harrier is a great game and it's a great port. I was never a huge Space Harrier fan bitd, but I find myself poppin' that HuCard often for some quickie fun. Fantasy Zone also looks like possible fun.

I imagined him as a Power Ranger villian with his own 'special' Putty Patrol and making up new powers for him as I go. Was a PR kid and proud of it! Back on topic, Wario Blast was hard. Super Bomberman 2 (borrowed from a friend) was hard. And this game is unfair. Of course, I'm talking about the last level and those heat-seeking balloons! Ys, I hated those. :x Always trapped in a corner and pray I was lucky enough to get enough legroom to work in, but I managed to get by and beat the game at last. Sherlock Holmes Vol. 1......61 (Complete w/ box and ALL THE TRIMMINGS)

/p1010191rg9.jpg/p1010192nw1.jpg

Cheerio, chaps and all that's cereal. Continuing the spiral downward on the numerical path of Turbo greatness. Got here Sherlock Holmes for Turbo CD and judging by the picture, I got all the trimming (even the inserts and catalog). When I look at these newspapers, Startropics is the first thing that enters my head. Letter from uncle with the hidden pass code was an interesting twist to video game history, but if you didn't have it, you were screwed from the start as many remembered. Luckily for fans, Nintendo released the code on their magazine, although it was a small entry. I haven't gotten far into Sherlock (actually, I've hardly got past the first cutscene), and was wondering if the newspapers are all essential or are they a novelty of the times?

Speaking of extras, added something new to my signature. A link to the picture of the Turbo Legacy poster with a twist. Games I have complete are blacked out, leaving only the games that are not (doesn't imply I don't have) left. As I'm trying to complete US collection, this will give a good idea for what I'm looking for and saves the hassle listing every game, time and time again. Bare in mind, what on this picture is my current status and will differ with what's shown already (suggesting the need to get off my lazy ass more).

Soldier Blade....60 (complete w/ box) X2

/p1010209ux9.jpg/p1010210rt1.jpg/p1010212gm6.jpg

No, you're not seeing double. I do in fact have TWO complete Soldier Blades w/ boxes. How in the world did I end up with both? Interesting story. Well, I've managed to secure one with manual and case with homemade spine sticker for $11. I was content in getting the box without losing an arm and a leg to Ebay. So, enter the waiting game until last month when a DP forum member was selling one complete with box for $55 shipping. Figured with 1/3 of the price, then sell the other one and break near even. PM the guy to agree to his price. The following Monday night, another DP forum member was having a massive turbo sale with boxed games AND boxes. Managing to order 4 boxed games (discuss in later installments) plus a bunch of boxes for $20 including one for Soldier Blade. As this was happening, it slipped my mind that I already bought Soldier Blade boxed just a few days.

A week later, I get my package in my mail wondering what's in it then hitting me like a ton of bricks. Now got two of them in my collection. One original copy with tray and box (although it's in fair condition depicted by the seller). Another with plastic case and box practically new. All for the "low, low, low" price of $70! ($230 less than on Ebay.) What I'm going to do with them? Kinda like the feeling owning two "versions" of a game. Maybe one day (in the distant future) trade one of these away. Don't know which...yet.

Yeah, it's fucking ridiculous, isn't it?

In 2006 I bought a complete-in-box copy of Soldier Blade in my neverending quest to acquire excellent-condition copies of all the US released Turbo games. I paid $46 on eBay. Now people are paying $300 for this game? Wha......? To my knowledge, Soldier Blade has never been a rare title.

Continuing off at 59 (and not 58 as to assume two games does not mean a count down in this countdown) with Ghost Manor. When I started my box hunt, my first priority were find the boxes first, even if they didn't have the game in them, they were going to be much harder to find as people tend to throw them away as they up space and clutter up the house (as quickly as I released). In Ghost Manor's case, its completion came in 2 parts. The first got off Ebay without the manual. From then, its "placed aside" from the rest like a person missing the part of themselves that made the whole. Lingering away from the pack ever praying to the gaming heavens to return what's lost spirit to its rightful home and its prayers were answered by zektor. His auctions (sry to see a turbo collector go) helped me procure the manual I desperately seek and Ghost Manor found a home among his wholesome kindred. The end.... :-({|=

LOL, thanks. But I'm not particular to the word "hardcore", too much bad rep from those who think they are. I'm just an enthusiast who love to collect and have fun with their games, no matter the system.

Oooh. Looks like you got one of the Ghost Manor boxes with the blacked-out cross.
I'm a cunt, always was. Topic Adjourned.

Now it's time class for a helping hand in higher learning toward the humble hues of Turbo heaven. Today's lesson: missed chances. To me, they're two kinds: the ones you regret and the one you don't.

As a teenager, I was a RPG buff ever since my hands held a Playstation and nearly every game I gotten was RPG, RPG/strategy, or RPG-action. Basically was a bloodhound for this stuff. Sorry to say I couldn't get all of them especially the few that grew monstrously expensive (i.e. Valkyrie Profile), but do I regret? No. How was I, a teenager in high school, suppose to know these games turn into gold brick (so to speak) in the near future. Not unless you have a crystal ball?

Fast forward to the present, when I began my Turbo quest, I was still a noob to whole Turbo spectrum and couldn't tell my Soldier Blade to my J.J. & Jeff. At my first NAVA meeting, someone bought a boxed Neutopia II and was selling it for $25, suffice to say and in a move of stupidity, I turned down the offer and thought it was "too expensive". Unfortunately it didn't stop there, few months later, another man brought in a truckload of Turbo games complete with box (Dynastic Hero, Magical Chase, Vasteel, Exile II, Might and Magic III, etc) and was the lucky individual first on the scene. However, one of the items left behind was today's Turbo game, Order of the Griffon for $25, thinking I can get far less on Ebay. Boy, how wrong I was when it went up to $40. Came back to the store too late, it was already gone and kicking myself for that ever since. Why? Cause I knew better yet idiotically didn't pull the trigger. Unfortunately, it wasn't my last. Luckily, I managed to buy a copy for roughly the same price from the same guy who sold me the Soldier Blade box and others in upcoming entries.

The lesson here? For all my screwups, there was a silver lining to them. Just because you missed one chance, should mean there wouldn't be another. Sure, you'll beat yourself up over a while but give yourself the incentive to work harder and smarter next time.

One more thing....

Did anyone watch my Legend of Ys opening? I know it hasn't been 24 hours but come on, how was it? Was it good? Was it great? Did I knock the pants off? Don't leave me in the dark! 8-[

Lords of the Rising Sun....57 (complete w/box)

Hey, hey everyone! :D

We continue on our marvelous march of magnificent marvel with the all-important countdown. Today is a complete CD called Lords of the Rising Sun. Let me confess to guys. Don't know why but I'm kinda fascinated by them for some reason. Is it because they were the first CD console games to make history? Or the fact they the boxed Turbo CD library consists of a small set? Or does the CD game label on the box turns my juices stirs some hidden drive in my subconscious calling out to me?.....Can't say for sure? But damn they're fun to play and collect. Experience anything like this?
