Press Run,

what is a good "rule of thumb" for collecting the boxes? Does that increase the typical price by like 20% if the box is mint? I saw a boxed China Warrior for like $25, is that kinda high?

The rule of thumb is always to get them as cheap as you can but not act like a cheapskate (which I am. ). To put it as try getting more for your "buck" so to speak. I'm a grad student and the salary doesn't pay a lot (after rent, food, and other expanses) so I have to make every penny and dollar count. When it comes to the "cheapies", I refrain from spending more than $15 per game. Outside of that, it varies for each game and let's face it, getting Magical Chase for $5 these days is nothing short of a miracle. My advice is be patient, keep an eye out, and jump when the opportunity presents itself (just look before you leap).

As for China Warrior, $25 is too much. It's a "cheapie", $15 is as high as I go.

Valis III.....56 (complete w/box)

/p1010220nv4.jpg/p1010221hj0.jpg

It's a merry mobile motion on memory lane with Valis III on today's countdown. Let me confess (again), I am a lover of niche and obscure gaming (pretty much describes everyone here). But my reason for loving goes beyond the pretty pixelated pictures of Turbo nirvana and explains my love for Sega CD, Sega Saturn, and Playstation one. What's that you ask? Animated segments! It's like getting a game and a show in one neat package and how can you not love that? Sure, it was crude but it take me back to a time, when anime (before CG) was an art and every frame contributes to the beauty, character, and brilliance to the form of Japanese animation. Nowadays, anime isn't even anime, it all done in Korea. (Take a look at the credits for Naruto.  :()

Bonk's Revenge.....55 (complete w/box)

/p1010231pw7.jpg/p1010232iq7.jpg

A cheerfully chillin' cold cheerio in our continuing countdown with the celebrated Bonk's Revenge. Now I know the mind-stimulating fleet visuals blows the "8-bit" archaic tugboat of its predecessor out of the waters. Wish the cover art would do it justice. In Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's bust threw the bedrock with his HEAD! Oh yeah, you're one tough caveman when your cranium is a registered weapon able to knock a hole into a mountain. Bonk's Revenger, here's Bonk headbutting a triceratops with its tongue out and done in a generic pose, lacking the spontaneous energy from the first. Even worse, its doesn't look dramatic, interesting, or even funny...just bland. Second, Bonk's is drawn out like a cartoon while the triceratops is something you find in a book or encyclopedia at the library. The two style make the whole picture seem out of place, kinda like Custard's Revenge only without the sexual orientation or nudity. But Bonk's Revenge is kinda average when you compare to it the other craptastic buffet from NEC's early works (i.e. Deep Blue, Dungeon Explorer).

What were they thinking?  Were these people really wanted to sabotage their company's works or were they greedy idiots who thought they could save cash by hiring preschoolers? You be the judge.  :-k

I'll be here playing Military Madness.

Yeah, the abysmal artwork on TG cases/boxes was really inexcusable. When I was collecting TG bitd there were probably at least 2 or 3 people in my class that could do 100% better than the crap NEC/TTI was dishing out. Hard to say what they were thinking.

Silent Debuggers.....54 (complete w/box)

/p1010233yb4.jpg/p1010234cb3.jpg

Our unanimous undeterred unity into the unknown unincrementing undecrementing urges in the Turbo countdown with Silent Debuggers. You know out of all the Turbo games I've played, Silent Debuggers was one of the few that rubbed the wrong way with me at first. It was back with my first Turbo Grafx 16 system and managed to grab a boatload of Turbo game, one of them being this. But after playing it a second time, I begin to realize the finer qualities....story, suspense, fast action and tons of aliens to shoot at! YEEHAW! But really, it took a while for it grow on me.

Some can best describe it was a spiritual predecessor to the current and ever-popular Dead Space. You're a space station, it's dark, it's creepy, and you're alone with a nest of hostile whatever-the-hell-they-are ready to pounce on your when you least suspect it. The first person views dumps a pool of suspense as you can't look four ways, making all the easier to become alien chow. Mmmmm.....mmmmmm.....mmmmm. HAHAHAHAHA

Duo_R

you know, many don't like this game. The key is you have to play this game with stereo headphones and in the dark, late at night after you watched a good alien sci-fi movie. Then you can really get into it. Of course the lame "friend" that just camps out in the base and send YOU to do all the dirty work is a total douche bag.

/p1010237ld9.jpg/p1010238py9.jpg

Send in the clones! (*cue Star Wars music)...always wanted to say that (or type). Today's countdown neverendingly narrows north to gnarly nirvana with Neutopia. Commonly referred as Zelda with 16-bit graphics and what's wrong with being a clone, huh? Sure, it lacks originality and imagination, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be any less fun!  Take for example the Disney games made by Capcom for the NES, SNES, and Gameboy. Ducktales/Darkwing Duck has a Megaman-like selection screen. Rescue Rangers follows a SMB3 map overlay. Tailspin's a carbon copy of Fantasy Zone, and Goof Troop is essentially a Zelda clone without the Master Sword. All n' all, these games were fun as they were meant to be. However that is not to say every developer should copy everybody else. But I can sympathize as nowadays it's hard for someone to come up with an game that's hasn't been done already. My message to game makers on the clone route is don't approach half-heartedly, try to make a game that can stand on it two feet,  add some new features to make stick out...but only as long as its fun to play (I'm looking at you Acclaim and LJN. )

Last Alert.....52 (complete w/box)

/p1010240fq3.jpg/p1010243jc3.jpg

Another awesome addition to my absolute all-out adventure, this Last Alert entry was made by possible by zektor (again!). Hope his financial situation and as well as many gamers on these boards and others respectively like it. Times are really tough now. Unemployment has reached all-time high, with some places reaching up to 14%. People working overtime, cutting corners, counting every penny and doing whatever to make ends meet to survive this financial disaster we put ourselves through. Gamers especially having to sell off collections (or bits of it) to pay the bills. It's really a sad sight to such things happen when something you put your heart, soul, and possibly your life then the next *snap* GONE! All because of some bad luck of the draw. I hope I never (a word I rarely use) have to make that decision. This is going out to all gamers making sacrifices, I wish you all a fast economic recovery and come of this hellhole with head high, smile on our face, and games in hand. Good luck everyone.

Today's countdown contestant is the Galaga '90! Now this entry is special! Why? Cause' I've reached the 90 games Mark!

With 21 countdown posts under my belt, I want to ask you guys a few things. What do you think of the thread so far and what parts do you like about it? It is my amazing all-knowing alliterations? How I dissect certain aspects of a game? Or relating my personal stories or views? Really would like to hear what you think. So, don't be afraid to your two cents.

BTW, I've updated my Turbo Grafx current status chart and many cover have been blacked out. But have a long way to go, if you got what I'm looking and want to trade or sell. Give me a pm.

Only 51 to go.

If you're insinuating that's I throw money around...then I'm piss-poor job explaining myself.

First off, I'm a cheapskate (actually semi-cheapskate). I don't buy anything unless I know/think I'm getting a good deal out of it. The last 3 entries in my countdown (last alert, neutopia, and galaga '90) costed no more than $40. I don't go to Gamestop unless I have one of their weekly coupons for 35% or B2G1 on their merchandise. So even if I spend $100 on games, the most likely case will be I got $200 worth of gaming. My penny-pinching doesn't stop with video games. I always try to squeeze a dollar or two out of many household application like using my roommate grocery card to get the best deal at the supermarket. (We just got a 3 pounds of pork for 5 bucks! ) When I go out to eat with my friends, we always pick the place that's having a special on a particular day (i.e. 1/2 half off BBQ wing, $10 coupon for any $40 purchase, etc.).

As for life outside the internet, I'm a grad student and don't get paid a lot (around a grand or so a month). Cheapskate is not only a necessity but a standard. Rent for my apartment is $525 a month includes heat, electricity, internet, cable, water and all other utilities in one neat package (and most likely how I'm able to shave a few hundred for other things including gaming). Though the space is small and my friend has commented that I live in a shoebox, but it's a secured shoebox with all the additional security put in. Despite the fact, they've risen my rent twice in a row for two years. When I first got here, it was $475. But still, I try to put a bottle cap around $100 for all gaming apparel per payday. (Get paid every 2 week for a total of $200/month.) My financial situation is okay as long as I finish my projects, keep my grades up, try to keep my adviser happy, and don't go on too many shopping/gaming binges.

But maybe we were just trying to compute how much you were spending on this quest for a boxed collection. Question - have you turned away alot of sales because the box had one too many creases? I have obtained a few boxes for games and they are NEVER in good shape. I would rate them as C's.

After frequently browsing Ebay horde of pig seller stores, the #1 culprit will always be price. But there have been rare occasions I've turned down items cause they weren't "up to par". There was an Air Zonk (complete w/box) for $57 or BO but the box had too many folds, bends, and creases, it was ridiculous. The same thing for a JJ & Jeff selling for $8. To sum it up, yeah I have a threshold but I have a bigger threshold in the "price" department.

It's an interesting and entertaining read, though the alliterations are sometimes a bit forced and it could benefit from a little proof reading.  If you're open to suggestions, it'd be interesting to see where each title was sourced and how much it set you back.  Though perhaps not, as some yahoo will undoubtedly try to piss on your parade, berate your intelligence, and tell you that you've been screwed.

Most of my stuff comes from Ebay or from the DP forums. If it comes from a peculiar source, such as, a fellow Turbo collector or never-heard-of-store, I usually mention it like I did when zektor helped me get Last Alert and the manual for Ghost Manor. The next entry is a popular sealed game I got for a good price and you wouldn't believe where I got it from.

As for asses pissing on my parade, I already had people thinking I spent $60 for Dungeon Explorer and $51 for Galaga '90 and their reactions weren't bad, rude or condensing at all. I didn't feel they were putting me down or condensing. They were actually curious and inquisitive and that's what I like.

Ninja Spirit....50 (sealed)

/p1010249ze5.jpg/p1010250dk3.jpg

Yo yo yo! Fellow Turbo enthunsiasts in reaching the high hopes of collecting by exchanging low quantities of cultural greenback in the countdown. That's right...its SEALED!  :D And I got for $15! :D :D You know what the best part is? Would you believe I got this from England?

That's right, my search for a US collection goes international! Crossing the ponds in the UK. Searching the prized wieners and chocolate of Germany. Frolicking the country side of France. Although it's not peculiar to stumble upon US games in foreign countries, but I was quite surprised to find sealed American Turbo games for dirt cheap price (the trifecta of awesomeness). That's how I managed to get Ninja Spirit and 2 sealed games (which will be mentioned in future entries) for $42 shipped. This was the tip of the iceberg. Sealed Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, Lords of the Rising Sun, Ninja Spirit and more all within the range of $10-15 EACH. There was a seller with a NEW European Turbo Grafx 16 package with 10 sealed games plus 6 loose ones for 100 pounds. Equivalent to around $130-140. Sadly I couldn't get these due to lack of funds at the time. Hell, I missed out in getting a sealed Monster Lair for $20 and had the fund to get it but didn't trust the guy enough. It was my first international purchase. Anyway, I feel going international may be the last haven on earth to great Turbo games for an affordable price before the GameSquads of the world come along and devour everything into greasy pockets. So, extend your search beyond our borders, you may be surprised with what you find.

Here's where I bought it:

Most of the goodies have been picked clean, so set your expectations too high.

Implode.....49 (complete)

/p1010262.jpg/p1010263.jpg

Hey all! Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Caught a really nasty bug and wasn't feeling like my old self for the better part of last week.  :-#
But I'm all in the clear and ready to charge forward on the on the gallant horse of Turbo virtue with Implode. Now, I planned to do another game for today but a rather peculiar occurrence happening way to often. I bought this game off Ebay from neo-"Red Frog" for $2.75 SEALED. When the package came in this weekend, I was totally shocked to find it has scratches on it and a tear on the wrap, what the hell! Sure, I practically paid potatoes for it   but when market a game as new and sealed, it better be wrapped in the plastic and not a scratch on it! And the same happened when I bought mint Tail Concerto for the PSX off Ebay. The case was covered in cracks and the case was broken, luckily the game was alright and I did workout for a partial refund from the seller but he did ship it in a floppy bubble envelope and didn't even mark the package as fragile like I normally do.

With all these broken case, my mind pondered about the Turbo boxes. Yeah, they're a bit of a overkill. What was the point in having them when the jewel case held the game, manual, and possible backside description well. Then, remember the broken cases that maybe NEC were afraid they babies  (the front end) could break easily and added the boxes and foam inserts as a security and safety precaution to absorb the force and keep them intact. It's just a wild thought really. The cases (for the Hucards) in the back end are made from a sturdy plastic and the only things they was "breakable" have to be the inside and the front-end clear casing. Then again, I'm still lingering over the fact that I got sub-par quality where obvious venues for higher caring could have been taken for practically nothing. (Or it could be the dead bug.)

Duo_R

hey, I bought the same game from the same seller and mine showed up just fine. Must have been bad luck of the draw. Fortunately, this guy does work with you if he doesn't get things right.

Here is what is interesting, when I played this disc in my Duo, I hear a sound like "click....click.....click.....click...." like the CD-Rom is hitting something as it spins. I can't figure it out, this is the only game that does this. Anyone else know what I am talking about?

I'd say that it was mostly to add room for screenshots and a description for HuCards, since their cases don't have rear labels.  I suspect that marketing may have played a small part as well - bigger is better, kinda like the TG-16 itself.

Takin' to the Hoop......48 (sealed)

/p1010251sa6.jpg/p1010252hd4.jpg

Another advancing adventure amidst awe-inspiring awesomeness around Turbo ascension. Takin' to the Hoop is another sealed product from England and paid for $3. (I believe that's the cheapest Turbo item I've paid for.) But who cares about a sports titles. Today....I went to my local Gamestop (after many personal difficulties) and managed to purchased the Legacy of Ys: Book I & II for the DS!. How does it fair? Well...two words.

It's......GREAT!!!!!!

The best game I've played so far this year. Here's the rundown:

They've kept most of the stuff that made the games great with a few modifications. First off, it is literally TWO games in one. You have the option of playing either Book I or II. However you start from level 1 for each. The opening cutscenes are beautifully done with personal affection for the second. (Gotta love the song "To Make The End of Battle".  ) Speaking of music, the game comes with its own music CD originally planned as a pre-order bonus and made the standard package as a way for Atlus to make up for the dealy. Though I haven't played the sucker, thus can't speak anything for it....yet.

Control scheme is divided into two modes. The normal setting is basically attack with the A button, something for newcomers to the series. The stylus mode has you maneuver Adol with the stylus pen. Attacking enemies by pointing and ramming into them is Falcom's gift to the fans, letting them know they weren't forgotten, and helps maintain its classical roots. Though it is strange they divided the mode into left and right-handed sections. Anyway I love this setup as it accommodates for the new fans as well as old without alienating either.

The story has changed somewhat. Instead shipping to port and greeted by the fortune, the game starts with Adol shipwrecked after braving the Veil of Storms surrounding the island (an idea borrowed from VI) and waking up in the port town. Now having to travel to Minea and meeting up with the fortune teller. Haven't gotten too far as recently retrieved the first book. As looks go, they probably using the same 3d engine for Ys VI on the PSP, 3d rendered background with 2d movable sprites. The environments are bigger with a whole lot added for exploration and many enemies had extreme makeovers. (Those floating heads in the dungeons are HUGE!)

There's are no voice acting, which is sad as that's what made the Turbo Y's stood out back in its day. But there's one thing bigger than no voice action. They butchered the boss music!  :-({|= How can they?! It was the greatest song the system....scratched that. It was the equivalent of a godsend and they go rip it a new one.     AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

huff...huff....huff....I'm fine. Besides my personal....gripes. So far the remake hasn't let me down. Did anyone else bought the game? Throw in your two cents!

My local Gamestops only ordered enough copies of "Y's Legacy" for DS to cover their pre-orders and due to the recession will not stock any more. Lame!

Can't believe there's a shortage of this game.(It's been two weeks already!) Do they really believe it's going to sell so poorly that they don't order beyond pre-orders?

Whatever the reason, they're depriving their customers of a really great game. It's a case of poor judgement to think a series with such rich history, wouldn't be a sell-out. What's next? Stopping selling games that's not Halo/Madden/Guitar Hero?

Duo_R

Yeah, I think it really is a fanbase game. Hell everytime I ask for the game I have to tell them how it is spelled. The friggin gaming 'tards have no clue!

Valis II......47 (complete w/box)

/p1010244vq3.jpg/p1010247tt2.jpg/p1010248cd2.jpg

A beautiful breath-taking bounty of a bi-twelve hour to the back-calling of my birth.....in plain english, it's my birthday!  :D :D :D :D :D

Yes, I turn a year older, a year wiser, and a year closer to whatever the hell I'm suppose to be doing. I haven't much to say right now as I spent the entire day celebrating/working on projects (personal and job-related). Wish I could do more but sometimes laziness gets the better of me and ended accomplishing nothing, really kicking myself for it. So, I'm making a birthday pledge! To do more work during the day and get more stuff overall as time we may have plenty now is a fleeting thing that many realize all too late.

Final Zone II.......46 (sealed)

/p1010253yq9.jpg

Time to another chronological depression leading to the spatial expansion to the future of Turbo hope on the countdown. Lately, I've slowed down a bit  clocking at the speed of one game per week ever since I caught that nasty cold bug.  Well. enough with that, now is when I rev my engine, ignite the turbo boosters....not into high gear, but EXTREME gear!

To make up for precious I'm doing a countdown once a day everyday until I've caught up. So, let's not waste anymore chronos particles and move through the 4th dimension via the 5th with today's entry: Final Zone II.

Yes people. It's sealed, I'm sad to say.  Why? Well, it looks like a friggin' good game. Problem is I don't want to open it, it's that I can't. To give you a better understanding of what I'm talking about. Let's kick into reverse and turn back the clock to the day I started on my Turbo travels. Three reasons behind that initial point: 1) Want to have the biggest Turbo e-penis  [/sarcasm] 2) Want to try out every game this great, underrated system had to offer and 3) it's a nice investment when I sell it. Face it, what good are video games when you kicked the bucket unless you're a reincarnated Egyptian pharaoh. Eventually, we all have to....let it go at some point.  Difference is I'm going to sell it before my meeting with the immortal specter.

Now I know what you're thinking and that's short term. My plan is LONG term. The few grand spend today could going for $50,000, $100,000, or even a MILLION ,decades from now. That kind of money could pay for my children/grandchildren's college tuition (pending inflation). Retro video games (especially the sealed and/or rare variety) have appreciated in price within the last few years, so it's not too far-fetched to believe this startling trend to continue on. Sealed stuff has fetched for astronomical amounts (sealed Chrono Trigger sold for least a GRAND) compared to the complete opened items. Let me ensure you,  my goal is not get everything sealed. It's having a complete US Boxed Turbo collection netting me the biggest e-penis in the world. [/sarcasm] Seriously, I don't buy these unless the price is right and usually is the case. Final Zone II cost me $15 (a steal compared to Ebay  :) ). My goal is get every game and have the most fun I can get with them. That's what makes collecting video games fun.

BTW, I want to thank everyone for all your birthday comments. You guys always make me feel welcome.  =D> =D> =D>

FZII really isn't a bad game. The graphics and gameplay get much better further into the game. I hope someday you can pick up a loose copy for cheap so you can give it a play.

Look forward to your further listings. heh

Not saying the game is bad. Just that its monetary value would severely lower if it were opened (which I'm very tempted to 8-[) and its in very good shape for a 20-year old sealed game. Usually I have a complete, unboxed copies solely for playing purposes, however I'm still looking for one at a relatively low price but Ebay isn't much help.
