12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

Well, I have a loosey goosey of this game I picked up along with a bunch of other games. I can deal with loosey goosey hueys, but when it comes to CD games I like to have the manual and case. I may be willing to part with her for dirt cheap, or even a trade, when I can find a replacement.  :)

Keith Courage in Alpha Zone.....45 1/2 (complete)

/p1010269.jpg/p1010270.jpg

We begin today twittering the tongue-twisting tales to Turbo tenacity towards Keith Courage in Alpha Zone (trying saying that ten times fast!). As all (by all I mean those in NEC kingdom) know, Keith Courage is the launch title and in-game bonus for the Turbo Grafx 16. But the decision-making process that led to this in a baffling mystery and was one mistake among the many Hudson and NEC made with introduction of their product to the American market. First off, the name...."Keith Courage in Alpha Zone"....wow, what a mouthful. Why not "Keith Courage"? Or "Alpha Zones"? Either alone would have sounded cooler but slapping both together was a lot to take in especially as a 8-year old. However, not as perplexing as to why they picked THIS game.

I've played the Keith Courage for a good while and to sum it up it's an OK game with a few adventure elements (like shops) added in. The tendency to use the same layout for each layout feel repetitive. Jumping does get a bit stiff and recursion of enemies is astounding but what really peeves me the most are the spikes. The hard part was figuring where they were. They're hidden so deceptively, you'd never where they were until it was too late. The real kicker was that NEC/Hudson could released the TG16 a year earlier instead took another year and you'd by then they'd have a solid library to pick a game displaying their system's awesome 16-bit capabilities. So, why wasn't Bonk picked beforehand? Hudson did make him their Turbo mascot, hell, they named him "PC Kid"! Bonk's Adventure took advantage of the Turbo feature unlike Keith Courage and more fun to play.

We have all made that assumption, that is just the countdown (you know to 0). However, Press-Run you might want to put like #45 or people will keep thinking that.

I have my original TG-16 from 1990 and the Keith Courage came with a mini comic book... my buddy gave me his TG-16 from the $69.99 era (came with Bonk and Keith Courage) and it doesn't have the comic... but what I cannot confirm is if it did and my friend just lost it years ago...

My copy of Keith Courage has a worn and faded comic book, but I scored mine off of eBay. Hmm, maybe some versions had it and some didn't. The comic isn't exactly award-winning literature.

It's probably not faded... it's supposed to be a few shades lighter than the game booklet and it's printed on uncoated cover-stock which will look a little different.

Got the boxed complete system from a game store, came with Takin' to the Hoop unfortunately.  Bought original Keith Courage along with 22 other games off Craigslist but it came with a broken case and had to find one to replace it.

Didn't know there's a comic. I'll need to make some corrections. Anyone one got a comic to trade or sell?

Aero Blasters.....44 1/2 (complete w/box)

/p1010260.jpg/p1010261.jpg

Off onward upon another eager adventure engineering opposite increments in one-hundred absolution. Today's game is Aero Blasters and thanks to it, I learned a new skill.

Originally, the game was part of a large lot of boxed games with system. I knew the lot would go for a large sum to win and keep back the money by reselling the extras but that take too long and didn't want to deplete my cash reserves when a real bargain popped up. To get past the hassle and save time, I messaged the seller, offering him $20 for the Aero Blasters. He accepted it then a Paypal payment and air mail delivery later, the game was at my doorstep. I gleed in joy.

Truth be told, this was the first I tried this method and luckily it all worked fine. I got my game and seller has money in his pocket free of charges. (Only works before the first bid.) This approach comes in handy when I see a particular item I want (manual or box) without lugging the unnecessary luggage. Unfortunately, my success afterwards hasn't been so forgiving but I won't falter just yet. Has anyone else tried this?

hoobs88

I have tried that technique several times but each time I did, the seller said that he didn't want to break up the lot and then I ended up getting outbid by "ultimate game connection" (an ebay reseller who overcharges). Kudos to you for getting it to work on your first attempt.

Dungeon Master: Theron's Quest.....42 1/2 (complete)

/p1010271.jpg/p1010272u.jpg

Sigh...usually I start these posts with a silly comment revolving around some theme. Not today. For I must first confess. My fellow Turbo enthusiasts, I have committed a sin. A sin so horrible, so unbelievable, so...so...unthinkable that, as I type these words, the mere thought of this horrendous act makes me burst in tears.  What is it? I'll tell you. We all know Pompey Pearson (or Pompous as I like to call him). Well, I didn't buy just one game but...TWO! And you guessed right, it's the two right above here. Now before you get out your torches and pitchforks and begin shouting "Bloody Murder!", let me tell how it all went down.

As I recall, it was about a month ago. (flashback wave) I was continuing my routine scan of Ebay's newest Turbo auctions for the slightest miracle of Dynastic Hero selling for $5. And my hopes and dreams are dashed once again. However this time something interesting popped up. A boxed Champions Forever Boxing was put for sale. As an avid miner when it come to scouring the vast Ebay, haven't seen one of these for a long while. Usually, I click on the auction and checked what other goods the sellers had going. Lo and behold to my surprise, Pompey Pearson was the seller and my stomach sank into pit of my gut. Surprisingly, the item was selling for $20 but a born-re-again cheapskate, the price was out of the question but not out of bargaining. Pming him an offer of $15 along the same lines with Dungeon Master (another $20 item). Bear in mind, I had "criticized" to him about his outrageous Ys pricing before, so didn't have to clue how'd it turn out. Luckily, he agreed to it but here's where it get interesting.

Asked him to change the pricing per to our agreement. He suggested to pay the full price and he'd refund the difference. Which is kinda strange as he could have changed it on his end or take them off the store then sell them under the table. Either way, this little revelation explains the ludicrous  pricing his games has been going. Don't put too much faith in that. When asked the lowest he'd go for his $40 Boxed Time Cruise, he said $32.  :? When the games finally came in by USP Sin, I began to comprehend the terrible act I have committed and the guilt has eaten at me until now.

Sigh....man that feels good! Well, time of my punishment. Ready for anything you can dish out. Don't worry I can take it!  ](*,) (Just be gentle with me.  8-[

geddon_jt

Funny, I bought a complete Champions Forever Boxing from him a few months ago myself. I think it was around the same price $20. Seemed pretty reasonable as I had fits trying to find this game complete. It was a smooth transaction and the game was top quality condition.

Bonk's Adventure.....41 1/2 (complete w/box)

/p1010278.jpg/p1010279.jpg

In my Keith Courage entry, I questioned NEC's decision declaring it the launch title for their terrific, towering titan, their Turbo Grafx-16, and asked why Bonk wasn't chosen? So did I little digging and came out with a few interesting. Now veterans, with vast PC/Turbo knowledge, most likely know what I'm talking about but this is for all the newbie and future guests of Turbo/PCE fascination.

To my surprise, Bonk's Adventure was a rush job, giving a three-month deadline for Atlus and Red to work in (kinda crushing my notion ). What's interesting with the PC Genjin (Bonk's Japanese name) is he didn't start from the bottom as a mascot but as a comic book characters. He starred in his  own comic panel in PC Engine Monthly and Hudson, catching eye in his growing popularity, decided to base a game on him following a similar layout to the Adventure Island series. Months later, what started out as a cavemen of a spoof in a comic strip for a video game magazine in a matter of months gains awards and recognition. Not bad for a caveman but not the end of the story.

PC Genjin (or PC Caveman) was Bonk's Original with PC obvious standing for personal computer. The creators gave a "scientific" meaning appropriate for their mascot's characters and came up with the name "Pithecanthropus Computerurus". Pithecanthropus was the name given to bones allegedly   connected to the missing link and Computerurus cause they were jerking around. His identity crisis didn't stop there. When ported to other systems, Bonk had to drop his system's namesake. FC Genjin for NES, GB Genjin for Gameboy, Chou Genjin for SNES, etc. It gotten so bad that its NES version were given TWO different names: "Friendthropus Computerurus" on the box and "Freakthoropus Computerus" for the game.

Fun fact: PC Denjin (Air Zonk for Turbo viewers) was subtitled Punkic Cyborgs.

(BTW, does anyone know if the case for Gates of Thunder has a spine insert?)

Gate of Thunder did not come with a spine label or jewel case back insert. However, Sparky has made his own Spine Labels and I believe his set has a Gate of Thunder Spine label. Also, at least 2 other members of this forum have made their own custom jewel case back inserts complete with the code to play the hidden Bomberman game.

Shockman.....40 1/2 (complete w/box)

/p1010282.jpg/p1010283.jpg

Shockman....a blatant attempt in capitalizing Capcom's reluctance to bring their Blue Bomber into the 16-bit era by providing their own version of Rockman with a duo of Shockman (the relations is obvious when the name rhymes). In actuality, it's a sequel to its Japanese counterpart: Shubibinman. Don't know why really, guess Hudson didn't feel the first would make the cut. The game is certainly gritty and darker than the Megaman (or least the original) but it is hard as hell to play. So hard that I've haven't gotten pass the second boss. Despite the difficulty, I was quite lucky to find it for $25, thanks to that website that was mentioned on here a few months back. Still wish I gotten Neutopia II and/or New Adventure Island. (BTW, I'm interesting in buying the box, manual, trays, and maybe the game. So pm me for those who bought them.)

However, my luck stumbles south when it comes to ebay. Take a look at this:

The kicker here is we're in a recession! The logical reaction is suggestively to tighten one's belt and reprioritize one's finances. Where's does it say in the Recession Survival Guide to throw caution in the wind and breaking the bank to spend OVER top dollar?! I hoped to clean house with the amazing opportunities that will my way. But damn, these "buyers" came out of nowhere and start ravaging over anything Turbo! Few month ago, bought a sealed Bomberman for $30 and now a complete copy sells for $56.  What are these people thinking?! Is there some unwritten rule that states X amount of your brain cells die every time the Dow Jones crashes?!

It's difficult looking for anything that come close to my price. And don't get me started on the bidding auctions. Some fool always outbids me in the end and when I tried to win in the last minute, they hold out to ridiculous amounts.

Damned if I do, damned if I don't!

Congratulations on hitting the century mark in your quest.  Methinks the recent ebay overpricing is due to numb-skulls getting their tax returns; they're flush with a little extra cash and lack patience, consequently temporarily driving up the prices.

Recent topic sprung up comparing Veigues' PC88 version. I popped my copy in the trusty Turbo Grafx-16 system and judge it for myself.

I agree the Turbo/PCE version has smoother graphics and better sounds, BUT the missing intro sequence is really a downer. Sucking out the story (or setting of the story) from the game. Not only that, its got the craziest controls. Up for jump. Down changes direction from right to left and vice versa. Getting the gatling gun to work by Press I+II together and use the D-pad to change the direction of it. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Haven't had the opportunity to try out its PC88 or any other games for the system for that matter. After checking the gamelist at DP, its the second import system I want to play and collect for.

They're certainly similar.  The PCE version doesn't really give the same vibe and is pretty much a generic robot, so I suppose this was an attempt to get Americans to accept something that might otherwise be considered too 'Japanese'.

It's a hood ornament. I really like Working Design giving their consumer more bang for their buck...Come on, the ugly Turbo grafx boxes held the games in, to say the least. No wonder these thing get tossed out. It serves no other purpose than some sort of decoration.

The front has the Vasteel name in reflective red lining with a shiny gold band at the top. On the back, we have the game description with four in-game screen shots. On the reverse side, there's the catalog showcases Working Designs other titles for Turbo Grafx CD/Duo including Exile, Exile: Wicked Phenomenon, and Cosmic Fantasy 2. Look closely, you can see the imprint for the Vasteel name meant to cover the side of the case. In the bottom left corner, there's an application to fill and cut out (Turbo triumph forbid! ) to send for their WD newsletter I believe.

Can't say too much about the game itself (haven't finished the first battle yet). Vasteel is the most "equipped" game for the Turbo Grafx. (The map is huge!) With Sherlock Holmes and JB Harold Murder Club following a close second.

All I need is the Exile: Wicked Phenomenon slipcase and my WD collection on Turbo will be complete!

Very cool addition!  Are the slipcases that hard to find?

I posted a close up of the 'Exile: Wicked Phenomenon' slip cover in the "what did you buy today?" thread a while back.

Super Star Soldier.....34 1/2 (complete w/box and extra manual)

/p1010305w.jpg/p1010307.jpg

Super Star Soldier takes the spotlight today! An amazing game in the Shooter ocean of the Turbo world. And no you're not seeing double...again. There's two manuals because it's the Canadian version: one for English and one for French. Probably a byproduct of Canada's bilingual enforcement laws. Wonder what other systems had to endure the French push.

Are the Canadian games more rare than their American versions?

They may be a little more rare, especially to find TG games with both the French and English manuals. Though I doubt this makes them worth anymore. English speaking Canadians just used the French manuals to wipe their butts after long sessions of Turbo action. The glossy paper is surprisingly efficient.

Ys III: Wanderers from Ys......33 1/2 (complete w/box)

/p1010302.jpg/p1010304i.jpg

Finally scored the box!  :D

Wanderers from Ys is an appropriate title. Not only a department in gameplay, but the artwork is somewhat below in quality compared to Ys I&II. It's the only Ys to be ported to 3 console stateside (TurboCD, Genesis, and SNES). I have all three in my possession but haven't very far in them yet. I can say, it amazing how one game can vary between consoles. For instance, the Genesis version is way more difficult. Enemies deal more damage makin hard to level up. I died so many times in the first mine and the first boss is making me pull my hair out. Both Super Nintendo and Genesis tell the backstory from Adol's perspective when foretold from a fortune teller. The Super Nintendo version the fortune teller had a strong resemblance to the twin goddess and the Black Pearl. Genesis had a similar thing, but went more into great detail. When all is said and done, I'm happy I finally got my hands on a complete Turbo Ys. Now only three games remain until I have all the boxed Turbo CD games at the disposal. Just three... =P~
