but it has "!" at the end of the name.  that makes it hot!  right?
...

i agree about the dl only software.  they're really shutting out everybody but the high-end user.  they might as well just write "sorry, for 18 and up" in big red letters on the box.

Sony is starting to remind me of Atari when they started floundering around releasing all kinds of weird shit right before their fall. Come on, the PSP is DEAD already. Releasing a fugly one with a smaller scren and ... umm ... seriously, downloadable content only?

I'm guessing that the only way to download games for it, you'll need to use the PS3 store. Which means you'll need a PS3. Which just happens to be the worst selling console out now.

The psp is hardly dead...US wise yes it's less than stellar, but go look at sales #'s for japan (and because of that the increase in games being made).  Besides NO ONE has come anywhere near as close in taking a bite out of Nintendo's portable market share as the psp has.

I don't know that I agree with that. 'Trickle' would be how I would describe the frequency of game releases. I can't remember the last time I actually used mine, or wanted to buy one of the games. R-Type command was the last one.
I think they've lost their touch. In Japan, it definately does better, but I don't care, that's half a world away. I
m just pissed i wasted money on mine.

Much as I hate to admit it, Nintendo really has the market down pat. I don't like Nintendo, but they know how to make a good handheld: cheap, stylish, and with a library of games that can be played in 15 minute chunks.

Umm....  You can download games from the Playstation Store directly to a PSP now-a-days. I guess you're haven't updated your firmware in a while. ;)

PSP is awesome, it used to be that I only played my DS, but, the DS really hasn't been doing much, & now Falcom is making games full time for the PSP, plus I'm stoked about Lunar, which'll hopefully lead into Lunar 3.  Ys 1 & 2 Chronicles & Ys 7, that right there is enough for a PSP purchase.  And, quite frankly, ALOT of people in the US have PSP's & PS3's, atleast, more then people think!  I'm in homes all the time cleaning carpets, & I see them ALOT, whether they be in rich homes or poor homes!

As for the PSP Go, the name is stupid, I do kinda like the look of it, but, I'm worried that UMD's will be a thing of the past, as I like to have a physical copy of games I own.

How will they handle existing umd games? Will we need to rebuy something we already paid for to play on the newest psp? Does this mean all psp publishers will have to adopt download only for their future releases? What happens when the internal space for games is used up? I doubt sony will allow copying to memory sticks and backups, and even if they do it's the same problem as the wii with it's initial policy of internal memory only for download games. Will developers cut content to keep the size of their games down in an attempt to not hog internal storage? Is this a replacement for the older psps or something that will coincide with them.

I'm sorry this is a disaster waiting to happen, it offers little to no incentive over the old models (especially true if you have a custom firmware) It's a known fact the security of the psp has been blown wide open. A new lousy psp is not going to deter piracy or increase much interest in the portable, I'm sorry. A better strategy would be to allow the user to download entire games to their memory stick and use some sort of encryption if they want to feel like they are deterring piracy. It's easy enough as it is to pirate on the psp. Allowing users to officially play games from the memory stick doesn't make it any easier.

Besides there still is a large resistance against everything becoming pay download only, and there always will be. Especially with how far behind our country is on high speed internet. It is reported that 12 million in the US still use dialup, and for many (mostly those in rural areas) dialup is the only viable option. Either that or crappy wireless internet which is great the whole 10% of the time it is working well if at all.

In my hometown with a population of 21426 in 2000, that has literally EXPLODED in population growth since then (I would not be surprised one bit if that number has more than doubled), at my house which is literally right outside the city limits (the sign is right in front of our road  ](*,)), our only options for internet are dialup, or wireless from one of two very crappy isps. I was on dial-up until 2005 until we finally switched to the crappy wireless, which is sometimes worse than dialup (ie not working at all). A friend in a nearby town that has a population of approximately 130 people WAY into the country can get dsl. WTF is up with that? Dsl is even preferable to my crappy internet.

Most of the time I don't even fool with downloadable content for the fact that it takes often many many hours to download anything of a sizable amount (ie greater than 100mb) Heck even when it's free I often don't care to bother with it half of the time. You want a surefire way to alienate part of your installed customer base, download only is a excellent way to do so. In fact if they stop pressing hard copies of psp games, I will make a note of pirating every game that I have no way of playing on my old psp, because you know it's going to get cracked. I mean hey, I am perfectly willing to buy an actual physical copy. If you want my money, stop the bs, I mean what's next? Them actually succeeding in making used games illegal in the US. That would go over well

For shame Sony! I will be standing by laughing at your abysmal failure to "save" the psp. The games are getting better are more of them are releasing, and instead of spending your resources and energy in promoting this trend, you waste it on a stupid new and yet less featured psp. If you were top dog in either the console market or handheld market you could get away with this from hype alone. Even though I like the psp even I have to admit the fan base is much higher for the ds. Heck the psp doesn't really need saving anyways. Certainly it's not top dog, but many psp games get in and stay in the top ten selling games charts for a while all the time. This is usually when a new significant release comes out. (Imagine that! hardware sales picking up when highly anticipated games release, who would have thought? :o ) Hardware sales are important, but in the end it's all about the games.

The problem is Sony is far too arrogant, they can't settle for second or third best, and they stubbornly push forward with bad ideas, never admitting that they do indeed make mistakes(unless pressured by legal action/severe backlash by the public). The are no longer #1 in the game industry and this drives Sony mad to no end. They even try to justify there position on the market by getting cocky and saying that they aren't competing with Nintendo (Microsoft has said the same) because the types of gamers Nintendo is catering towards differs from their own (Yet m$ and sony have made multiple forays into "casual" gaming on their very own systems. They still do, going so far as to copy many ideas from nintendo )

Sorry to burst you bubble Sony, throughout the years competing consoles have always mainly catered toward a different crowd. Bitd Snes was king for rpgs (at least in the us) and was well known for it's platformers, the Genny was great for many excellent arcade ports and shooters, and pce was also great for shooters and arcade ports, as well as many more "unique" games. Snes was also considered the more family friendly of the 2 (snes and genny) and Genny was the system to go for darker, more violent, uncensored games. These differences are but a few of the many that have defined a console's audience throughout the years. If you consider "casual" games another genre, the wii is the place to go for that genre (that and party/multiplayer games) M$, Sony, and Nintendo are all selling video games of all kinds of genres, therefore they are in the same market. Even though they are few and far between (this is starting to change), the Wii does have it's serious "hardcore" games. To insinuate that Sony and Nintendo are not in direct competition both shows Sony's insecurities, and how cocky Sony is. (Especially when Sony is in no position to be making any claims really)

Sony is like that cocky "popular" kid in junior high that becomes upset and starved for attention when they are no longer the "coolest kid on the block" in highschool. They cannot and will not come to terms with the fact that their peers find someone or some people to be "cooler". Instead of trying to simply fit in, get along with everyone and go on with life, they become obsessed with being #1 again. After a while no one wants to hang around them, and they end up with few true friends if any at all...

Download only is lame.  I'd rather see 'em sell games on a more secure version of their MemoryStick, as download only makes it essentially worthless a few years down the road when their servers are put to use supporting the next best thing.

Good questions.  What's the average size of current PSP games?  UMDs can hold up to 1.8GB, so if they're anywhere near that size, then you'll only be able to fit a dozen or so games on this PSPhail.

Perhaps it'll be like the GBA Micro - a good way to rake in a bit more cash from the niche market looking for something different and more stylish.  I'm all right with that, I suppose.

Saying that the two versions will co-exist leaves them the option to bail out on it completely when it inevitably fails.

Nintendo said the DS would co-exist with the GBA line. The current DSi can't even play GBA carts and you'd be hard-pressed to find a new GBA/SP/Micro on the shelves ANYWHERE.

I understand where they are coming from with DLC, but I when I buy a game, I want the hardcopy.  I like the assurance that It wont disappear overnight if something were to happen with the unit.  And if they deal with the downloaded games like they do their downloadable movies, then you're screwed.  They let you download it to your machine, and if you were to replace it, you have to purchase it again.  If you delete it to make room, I think you are allowed 1 more download.

Being a big PSP supporter (own the launch model+30 UMDs) the PSPGo makes more sense to me than other people.  I'd love to bring my PSP around with me on a daily basis but it is too large to fit in my pocket.  I'll be buying the PSPGo on form factor alone.

not sure.  it's possible that sony might include a feature for this in a future firmware update.  sony hasn't been one to needlessly milk cash from consumers, for the most part.  they're the only hardware manufacturer who isn't region locking games.  they started an initiative to ensure that all blue ray movies have a digital copy included for free (buy a movie and it works for your ps3 and psp).  they allow developers to include "remote play" in ps3 games so that they also double as psp games.  and i'm sure there're more examples.  i wouldn't put it past them to provide a disc-to-digital conversion application for free.  we can only keep a positive outlook for now :)

the thing is, sony wants (and needs) to make money.  by giving away a conversion application for free, they're encouraging and justifying many more people to upgrade from their current psp to a new go! model.  the amount of revenue they'll make by selling more $200+ go!'s is significantly greater than the money they'd make selling a conversion application.
