Need two more PCE controllers, possibly an arcade stick, what are my options?

Hi all,

I originally went to post in this thread but decided I should start a new one instead of making a mess of someone else's WTB thread. And maybe the answers in this thread will help someone else down the road.

I currently have three pads: an Ave6, a white Duo-R pad, and a black/blue (I think) CoreGrafx pad. I need two more controllers.

I'd like to pick up an arcade-style stick. I don't need anything fancy, but the only option I've come across would be a US Turbostick that I would need to get modified for my Duo-R. And I've never used one so I don't know if I'll even like it.

Did NEC ever put out an arcade stick for the PCE and Duo-R, or are there any recommended third-party ones? I've seen the XE1 Pro (or something like that) mentioned here but never saw one for sale. It may have been for the Famicom, I can't remember right now.

Finally, what should my 5th pad be? Anything special about the Ave3 pads? They look fairly comfy (I use the Ave6 with no issues). Or should I go with another 6-button, like a Duo-RX pad, if I can find one that doesn't cost $100?

Thanks!

duo RX pads suck.  The D-Pads are stiff.  I hate using it for fighting games.  I don't see the big deal about em really...they're not worth buying unless theyre ~20$ honestly....

Ave6 are just fine, and Ave3 are nice too.  I got an Ave 3 pad for free with a Duo R i bought and i was really amazed at how smooth it controlled for Final Soldier.... I use it more than the regular duo pad.  Even though I only need 2 buttons on it!   If you like ave3 you will like ave6, and vice versa...

You know you can make a Turbo Grafx arcade stick connector fit a duo port .  you just need to change the connector from a din to a mini din, or make an adapter thats got a female DIN to a male mini-din.   Making the adapters is mighty easy since you just connect matching pin#s with a bit of wire and then wrap the wire up in electrical tape.

I made one just like that, and also made a reverse one to use ave6 on a turbo!

the XE-1 HE PRO is probably the best commercial released stick.

as for the pads, i would go with a hori 6 button fighting commander PC or original 6 button AVE pad.

Thanks for the info. Yep, I know there isn't much to switching the plugs, but I suck at that kind of wiring so I'd probably need to let someone else do it for me. Also, I haven't seen much about the Turbostick and don't think I've ever seen one in person so I didn't know what kind of quality it had to it.

THAT is the XE-1 Pro I saw on here. I think it was yours actually, heh. Where might I find one of those bad boys?

And that Hori stick looks like a freakin' monster.

Don't think I've seen that Hori 6-button pad before. Got a link/pic?

Thanks guys.

damn..it's really hard to find a pic on the net. but basically it's a SFC clone pad held in grey-black color with 6 buttons on the surface (no shoulder buttons) and for each button an indipendent rapid-fire switch. i appreciate it a lot.

will make a pic tonite.

I actually got both of those off of Ebay.  Took sometime to even find the XE-1, the Hori popped up a bit easier.  Mainly just have to wait for a decent deal(especially shipping).

i've once opened the XE-1 PRO and now i have troubles to put it back together again

the struggling point is to put in the 4-way / 8-way barrier clips in it. that board is a hell of a mechanical manufacture.

The only stick that I've used is the rather small and cramped TurboStick.  The only thing going for it is price, as you should easily be able to get one shipped for under $20, though I'd put the money towards a better stick.

I don't love or hate any of the controllers. Joysticks are really just a matter of personal preference but I'd suggest building one if you have the time to do so. If not, the one's nectarsis listed are probably considered the best of the pc engine bunch.

Thanks again for the input folks.

Toshi has a Hori stick on eBay right now, but I think I'm gonna wait and keep an eye out for an XE1 unless I come across a good deal on the Hori. The one on eBay is almost $100 (probably cuz it's boxed, which I don't need).

How's the cord length on the two arcade sticks and the Commander pad? Is it pathetically short like the stock PCE pads?

What are people's opinions on the ASCII Stick Engine? That stick is pretty easy to find online.
