I just got my Saturn in the mail today.  It is a US model, but comes with a 4mb japan card.  I don't know if this is compatible, but for some reason the trader included it.  Does this act as a convertor to play japanese games?  It's product ID is hss-0167

There's not much of a difference between the models. The first one has an activity LED for the CD. That's about it. Get an old one if you want an activity LED, or a new one if you don't.

As for playing imports, any 3-in-1 or 4-in-1 cart will work. The official Datel Pro Action Replay carts are more expensive, but not better than the "generic" models in any way.

Anything you choose will work great, I assure you.  :)

Which version of MvC2 you got? If it's DC, then I don't know if it'll get you anything, that's what ppl tell me anyway.

cavein2000

Nah, it is the DC and the trade is done.  I think it is a decent deal for me since we are doing an even trade and all.

The older Saturn units with led use JVC cd-drives.
The slim lines use Sanyo drives.
Japan mod can be done, look for jumpers JP6,7,10,11.
2 have traces that need to be done away with, and two other need to be linked together if you want to make a straight accros import playing system. This would come in handy if you want to play KOF 95,Ultraman,Fighters History ect.

The other ram cart titles can be used with the normal 4n1 carts that have all region play.

If you desire also, you can do the above mod with a toggle switch.
Depending on the saturn revision, the jumpers will be in different areas, either on bottom or top of the motherboard pcb. There are a few revisions,so you would have to look around.
The Sanyo drives are not as dependible as the JVC drives.

At this rate though its kinda moot discussion unless your taking a first generation deck and a second gen deck new right out of the box.
Used decks will have a varied life span depending on the abuse and use placed on them.

If you have a s-video tv Id get a s-video cable.Works great for almost all games, except maybe Drac X,because of some mode it runs in,you get a ugly picture near the top of the screen in s-video.The picture is still sharp however.

The Saturn supported HD in hardware, but Sega never begin to push it as a feature. Its one of the few systems I know of that used so many video modes, low res and high,in hardware back and forth.Fighters Megamix was a good example of this,as depending on what stage you were on,it ran in either low or high res. Finding a HD cable seems to be impossible though. Ive yet to come across one,and back in 99 I tried to haggle a Sega repair tech over it,but to no avail. 1-800-USA Sega was useless.

Is this model okay?  I have a coupon for playasia so it kind of makes it more worthwhile.

you should have started a completely new thread or posted that it arrived at the bottom.About 4 meg carts, you need to be more specific then that as for what it looks like.
Is it the Capcom standard 4 meg cart. It is either dark blue or grey,I dont remember which.I think these carts were made by Sega.
Is it a white 4n1 cart with Datel Action replay game genie built in?
Is it the black cart that has a toggle switch for 4 meg and 1 meg and has region bypass built in?

A pic would help, esp of your gonna give such a vague description.

If its the Capcom 4 meg cart made by Sega, then it wont work with some of the SNK NeoGeo ports that need 1 meg function. If you want to get the most out of importing, and you dont want to do a region mod,you are still going to need to purchase a 4n1 cart.

cavein2000

Sorry bout the vagueness and misposting.
 :D

It does have the Sega Saturn logo on it.  It also has japanese writing and 4mb it is black or navy blue (translucent) in color. I'm pretty sure I still need the 4 in 1 cart for imports.  Just wondering if this card was worth anything or if it served any purpose.

PCEngineHell

Its the Capcom cart.
It would be useful if you had a region modded Saturn, because then you would have the extra ram for Capcom and some SNK games.
If your stuck in US mode then you cant do much.Basically you need to just store it away and get a 4n1 cart.
To answer the other question, its only worth something to you if you can use it, unless you just like staring at it.

You dont know much about Saturn stuff,so if I was you Id hit a system FAQ.

neokellyzero

If you had a jap saturn you could use it- other wise it's not "worth much".  Most jap saturn players already have one- and one is all you really need because it works with all the 1 or 4 meg games.  If you post in a forum or ebay you might get a couple bucks.  Your best bet if you are going to stay with a US saturn is the action replay 4 in 1.  Best $30 you'll ever spend on a US saturn.  If you are looking for a good FAQ the best one is:

PCEngineHell

The Capcom cart does not work with all the SNK titles.

What cable are you talking about? A D-terminal cable?

cavein2000

Thanks, I'll def pick up a 4in1cart for the jap games.  Since there is no real use for the "capcom cart" I'll probably put it up on ebay or in the digital press forum.
