Ys 3

Hi, after 18 years I finally made it through book 1 and 2, lol. Anyway, I now want to pick up Ys 3 and was wondering peoples opinions of it. I know you actually yield a sword and it's more side scolling but how else does it compare? I was close to breaking stuff while getting lost in Solomine Shrine, very rewarding when you finally figure it out but man I can get a short temper getting lost in mazes. Does book 3 have as complex mazes? Any other differances? Just curious, I'm going to pick it up and try it anyway but thought this would be a good place to get opinions on the game.

Not nearly as complex. Very easy by comparison. Ys 3 is my favorite of the series, personally. The soundtrack is unarguably the best in the series.

I'm with you-- I found the whole Solomon Shrine experience in Book 2 very klunky and not much fun.

Ys 3 isn't neaaarly as complex. The dungeons are all actually pretty linear/easy to navigate and memorize.

That doesn't stop it from being challenging and fun.

Just don't expect the same kind of experience you got with Ys I and II. It's flawed, very easy but ultimately still fun to play, and is helped considerably by the soundtrack.

Thanks, after basically ignoring my family for a week+ straight because I got consumed in getting through the whole book 1 and 2 a fun easier quest with good tunes is probably just what I need.

A good plan. When you're done with Ys III , pick up Ys IV (my favorite of the bunch) and neglect your familial duties for another week or so.

Definitely; it's pretty straightforward. Even better, there's a translation patch (with a cut scene patch in the works..... eventually..... maybe), though you'd obviously have to use a CDR or emulator.

Ys 3 ok but i still find the game to be a filler great sound track at least though.

It's a great game, although it is probably my least favorite from the Ys series. I am in the midst of an Ys run right now. I beat Ys Book I & II last week on the Turbo CD and the DS remake, then I played Ys III all the way through on my day off Monday on my TurboCD, very short game, only a couple of hours to beat, that includes taking a break for a nice lunch. Currently playing Ys IV Mask of the Sun for the SFC, next will be Ys IV Dawn of Ys(my favorite Ys game), then Ys V and Ys V expert on my SFC, and finally Ys VI on my PS2.

Ys III is a great game, even if it is short, the music is outstanding as it always is in a Ys game. The voice-overs are a little cheesy, but it was made before voice-overs were a big thing, so there's a certain charm to its cheesiness.

I just want to throw this out there... the soundtrack to Ys III is truly wonderful,

but it is NOT incontrovertibly superior to the Ys I & II soundtrack.

Played through it over the weekend. Had alot of fun and the music is great. It really was alot easier and less complex than book 1 and 2. Both games ar great, going to have to pick up Ys 4 but will probably hold off till next winter and set a week or 2 aside and go through them all in a row. Thanks again guys!

Have you played Faxanadu or Popful Mail. Ys 3 is like those games. If they are your cup of tea you'll like it. I like Popful Mail (US Sega CD) more but Faxanadu less.

That's a good call, and both Faxanadu and Popful Mail are great games. I think Faxanadu is one of the most underrated NES games out there. Falcom of course had a part in all those games, so it's no surprise that they share some elements.

I'm glad you enjoyed the game. I noticed that you refrained from stating, "The soundtrack for Ys I & II is superior to that of Ys III."

Don't be alarmed: I know that you are simply afraid to share your passion for Ys I & II's songs with everyone here. For the record, though, I agree with your deeply-held (yet unannounced) assessment of Ys I & II's superiority.

HaHa- The music is great in both, not sure I can pick, maybe I'll have to give them both a listen again to decide which I like better. I know the guitar riff from Alcano Ruins stage or whatever it is is still stuck in my head but I played that one more recently.
