I was the guy to bid 600, figured I could sell the box afterward for 200 or so...  that didn't happen.

geddon_jt

That's a pretty mangled box, too..

How much you thing that box would sell for by itself?

nat

You could get as high as $300, or more. I'm not kidding.

How much do you think a manual of equal condition would sell for?  Is the box or manual worth more?

mrhaboobi

box is worth more than manual.. i'm happy to say i now how a complete copy of the game :) took 8 years and 3 seperate purchases to do it :)
Looking for (MINT ONLY)
US Manual : Magical Chase, Shockman
US Box : Turrican,  Soldier Blade, New Adventure Island, Neutopia II
Other : Sapphire OBI, Turbo Play Aug/Sept 90, April/May 92, Turbo Edge Spring 90

PC Engine Special Cards : Bomberman User Battle

Alydnes Super Grafx

Not sure, but you'd think the manual would be worth more.

mrhaboobi

chances of finding a box in worthwhile condition is much lower than finding the game with a good quality manual.. finding a loose hu and manaul together is more likley.. hence box worth more, but some people dont value the boxes and just want to hu. so maybe it depends on who the buyer is.

Pretty accurate.  Most people could give two shits about the boxes however for the people that DO want the box, we are willing to pay for it.  Personally I wouldn't want the box in that auction as its condition looks like someone slept on it.  A box good condition?  I personally would pay up to $450 for the box with the insert alone.
All is well. :)

didnt have to give up a kidney.. paid what i thought was a fair price and thats significantly less that what roy above was suggestin he'd pay.  $450 for a box is a bit insane :)   half that is getting closer in my opinion and even then i have to question why we pay that much for some thin cardboard.. im sure i could get a run of re production boxes made for that price.. infact thats tempted to do it, make a repro which is clearly a repro and then sell them for a fair price so that collectors can at least have a nice looking collection ... kinda like sparky and his labels..

The monetary value of Magical Chase always overpowers any discussion of how well-programmed a game it is. That is to say, I think it's a pretty cool game with excellent art direction and some nice programming tricks. Also, one of the best music tracks of any PCE HuCard (last level).

There, found a YouTube link to the track I'm talking about.

Senshi

well isn't that cool. Didn't know such a thing existed. Thank ya.

That's because a VAST majority (obviously not all) pop in to nab the game and that's it.  When/if they claim their "prize" they drift away rarely to be seen again.   When you see certain peeps going all nuts "ANY price", "renting it out" etc.  you can kinda see what their plan is.

It's a nice cute-em-up, nothing particularly special like say Sapphire or Rendering Ranger, but I'm always amazed prices people pay for rarity, no game IMO is worth more than $100 unless you're talking about a PCB, of course I've bought and sold games for more, but $600+, that's just surreal to say you own a tiny piece of plastic and cardboard.  Even more amazing when you consider a JP version does exist (though not for chump change either) when we're not talking about a text-driven game like Dynastic Hero.  This is a case where I'm glad emulators exist so your average gamer can actually play a game such as this without being gouged in the pocketbook.

nah i dont want the magical chase, unfortunately for you i now have a boxed one ( and its minty not like that auction), so not going to try and grab another..  I was looking at another auction with some manuals i wanted.. :)  and was being outbid by the underbidder on the magical chase.. so i just wondered if that was a forum member.

So I'm not reading that wrong.  $650 for Magical Chase.  Makes me wish I would have bought those three sealed copies for $25 at the Electronic Boutique in New Philly in 1995.  Random stop to pee 15 years ago could have meant a new $2000 wrist watch today.  Bling Bling.

I've got a box for Power Golf with wrapper and foam insert.  Anyone want to pay $450 for that???   :D

mrhaboobi

3 sealed one would have bought you a couple of watches in todays inflated market

Actually out of interest, ( this has most likley been discussed)  Do we know roughly how many MC made it to the market?  And was it distributed more in certain areas ( eg east vs west cost )..  Seems insane that we see so few copies.. surely there are hundred or thousands of them floating around?

Haha, nice.
But seriously, anytime someone thinks prices of videogames are nuts, look at baseball cards.  It's a piece of cardboard with a picture, that's it.  And I'm not just talking '52 Topps Mantles here, I mean even the most current stuff, some of it gets hundreds and holds value.  At least a game is playable and a physically relevant item needed to play.  Baseball cards are paper.

Well, 5000 made, right?  Then you figure 90% of them were bought, opened, and the box disposed of immediately.  Of those 500 left, years later half were shit-canned by a mother clearing out the attic.  Of the 250 left with box, 60% were buried with the Atari 2600 E.T.'s in the desert.  Of the remaining 100, half are in Roy's basement.  Of the last 50, 49 are with collector's that haven't actually played a game in 20 years.

The last one is mine.

nice.. :)  and i guess almost believable :).. although i havent played my copy of the game, i did play a game on the weekend, so automatically that nullifies your thinking :)

Sounds like its time to dig up some landfills :)..

seriously though do we have any ideal of the distribution, would be interested to know where people remember seeing them for sale..  perhaps some of the US missed out.

And whats with all these new sealed games on european ebays?  is that really NOS from sales of the PAL hardware that failed?  any info on that gear.. did MC ever make it into the PAL market..

Well you have to figure it was the very end of the lifespan of the Turbo, so of the 5000 (maybe it was 3000?), some were likely sent back to TTI and perhaps destroyed.  Bargin bin for some too.  And those were likely bought by kids that were just looking for a cheap thrill and trashed it.  Seriously, what do you think happens to all those Wii M&M's games you see at WalMart?

Here's the real question... how much are you guys willing to pay for official Magical Chase box *shrinkwrap*?

I'd consider carefully peeling the shrinkwrap off of mine, if the price was right...  Mine is not sealed, mind you, but neatly sliced at the top, and the shrinkwrap is still tight and shiny. Anyone? Anyone?

Touché.  Most often it really is all about the status of owning the item, I guess I will never fully understand that myself unless my money trees actually start sprouting.  Even back when I was a collector, I wanted the "rere" game to actually experience Panzer Saga and Snatcher, not just to know they are sitting on my shelf.

D-Lite is right about the 5,000 figure for the MC print run... Here's food for thought: Order of the Griffon had the same print run as Magical Chase. So like "mrhaboobi" said, why the fuck is it worth so much? Order of the Griffon doesn't go for $650.
