No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I remember back in the mid-90's when I played the heck out of this game, I found a spot on the final boss where you could stay in one spot and he couldn't get you.  And it shot out missiles or something that you could destroy for points.  One evening I got to that spot just before dinner and taped down the buttons while I ate.  When I came back I had this obscene score.  I remember taking a picture of it and intended to send it to a magazine, but I don't think I ever did.

I'll have to see if I can find that spot again. :p  I think the last time I tried playing this game I just couldn't get into it.  It's a lot harder than I remember.  Man, I must have had some patience when I was a kid.

Somebody here with emu should document this! I've beaten this game many times over the years, but I never found a "sweet spot" on the last boss like this (not that I was looking, mind you). :)

Well now I HOPE it was the last boss that I'm remembering.  I know it was late in the game, and I'm pretty sure it was the final boss, but I haven't played the game enough to beat it since the mid-90s, so my memory could be a little fuzzy.  But I *think* it was the final boss. :D

If it's any consolation, it was the lower left area of the screen.

Somewhere around there... (if my memory serves me right).

I thought I'd be famous with the high score I got; it was one of the great achievements of my life (up to that point)... and then never got around to submitting it anywhere. :p

I doubt I'll eve be good enough at this game again to make it to the end, but if I ever do, I'll be sure to at least take a snapshot of it.

Gotcha. I was able to put rubber bands on a controller for Ninja Spirit and rack up a score (enemies kept respawing). Not sure if I ever sent it in to a magazine, but I know I wanted to.

I tried to make it to the end a couple of days ago and level 7 beat me down something furious.  Still pretty sure I'll never make it to the end. :)

Here is my score :

Self proclamed Aldynes World Champion

Slight improvement over my last score: 296,600. Those homing worms in stage seven are a royal pain. :P

Hey Roflmao, stick with it, it has a good curve.  I never got to an awesome one life clear (in fact I never cleared it) but I reckon I can get pretty far on a single credit and then level 10 hands my ass to me.  Just too quick.  I spent about 30 lives hardly progressing into the level at all.

A pretty cool game I've never played till recently. It's like dungeon explorer, with bad graphics but awesome music

So close, 751500; 1cc. I don't know if it matters for this thread but I did this in the arcade mode.

Looks like arcade mode makes the game a bit easier, beat this twice today in regular mode and got lower scores; this one was fairly close to my previous though:

692600

Thanks! I'll probably give this one a few more tries too. :]

Can people who have posted scores say if they played in regular mode or arcade? It seems there is a difference.

chany60126

Do you have to input a cheat code to play in arcade mode? There is no menu in the game. I would assume everybody but gheebee has played this in normal mode.

If the pic shows the whole screen and you see pillarboxing like in the pic from my first post then it's arcade, but if the image touches the right and left edges of the screen then it's regular.
