Who'd be interested in a Neo Nectaris translation project?

Just as the subject asks... what kind of community interest would there be a Neo Nectaris translation?

/mmm.gif

spenoza

Need you even ask? Geez... : )  Some of us will really want one and others will complain that it's a waste of effort and the game can be played perfectly well without being translated. The latter aren't the audience for a translation and thus their opinions should have no effect on any decision on this.

yeah, I'm one who says why bother cause there are only 4 options to choose from. Not to hard to figure out how to play it.

I think theres better games to waste translation efforts on, especially since it will probably never get done anyways.

It would be nice if it got a full translation, voice and all and had an English version of Nectaris swapped in. I'd prefer a translation with the proper names, even if it got retitled.

Typical translation fanboy comment. Don't you have anything better to do than heckle hating hobbiests?

Basically, everything that others do is juts considered crap in this section. Everything that some people here can not even complete even if they say the contrary, even if they're an 8 or so person team.

BT>why should Arkhan even bother posting too? So if I understand your comment, you have the right to post to criticize others' ideas or projects but you don't have the right to criticize the criticizers?

You didn't understand my comment as intended, I guess that the wink smiley wasn't enough.

Some people enjoy being negative or shooting down other people's ideas or judging whether or not what someone else does for fun is worth their while. Just as many people love buying up old video games just to possess, but never play them.

I agree with Spenoza that the interest in any project should be all that matters as far as outside opinions go and I would love any kind of translated Neo Nectaris as it's obe of my favorite games. I'm not picking sides or singling anyone out, but pcefx turned negative a long time ago. To the point that people argue about arguing.

The question was "what kind of community interest would there be".  This means "who is for this, and who is against it?  Lets see what everyone thinks/feels"

Clearly, there are people who are all for it and are naive enough to think it will happen sometime this side of 2030.

Then there are the people who are uninterested skeptics.  I myself don't want to see anything fail.  However, given the track record, it will fail.  I'd love to be wrong about it, as long as the people who finish shit don't just finish it for the sake of proving the naysayers wrong.  If you're only doing shit to spite people or prove them wrong, you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

So, lets cut the boyscout bullshit and take it for what it is.  This is the PCE community.  Land of shit that never gets finished because everyone's got fucking ADD.

shubibiman

There is no problem in saying that you think that Neo Nectaris is not the best game to be translated due to the fact that the language is not a barrier here as opposed to games such as Tenga Makyou II and other RPGs. Still, I think it's not fair just to overlook this kind of projects even before they started. If someone wants to work on translating a game, then so be it. If it doesn't fail, then cool. If it fails, yes of course it will be one of those projects that fails yet again. But if noone even starts, we're sure not to see anything transaletd at all.

So please at least don't be discouraging people.

Truth is, this is an excellent game for a translation candidate. As long as all the menus and stat/data words are translated and inserted first, even that would be a good thing. The story is less important to a game like this.

It depends, has anyone looked into how hard this game is to hack?

I don't think this game has been explored, yet. I'm not overly concerned. The truly important bits should be relatively easy to get to and alter. Not only that, but we can pull pre-existing data and graphics out of the original military madness for consistency.

Nazi NecroPhile

I'm interested in seeing this translated, and in light of the multiple completed translations I won't be pissing down my legs that 'nothing ever gets done'.

Like I said before, it was already translated on the Playstation 1, so really all that needs to be done is rip the text from the Playstation 1 version and then reinsert the text in the pce version. It was even done on the Iphone, though I'm not sure if its in English or not.

MotherGunner

I don't remember Nectaris on PS1 being the same game as Neo Nectaris on PCE.

The PlayStation 1 game is not Neo Nectaris. In fact, the PS version takes a step backwards in that it ignores all the nice incremental changes introduced by Neo. The PS version is truly "Nectaris 1.1"

If you are curious, you can read more on why Neo Nectaris is special.

The point I was making that you can just rip the text from the already translated game instead of starting a whole new translation. Translating 8 units and a few other things different from the psx version shouldn't be all that difficult.
FYI, I did know that the two games were different.

FraGMarE

The whole reason I asked is because this seems like it would be relatively quick easy to translate.  The text and graphics swaps needed are fairly minimal compared to something huge like Ziria 2.  The Dracula X translation project got me thinking about this.  The same argument could be made for Dracula X... i.e., it's not worth translating because it's playable anyway.  Well, I personally think that argument is invalid.  If there's interest in translating it, I say go for it.  If someone's willing to translate it, I'm willing to do what little graphical work is needed.

spenoza

We've got enough folks here to crowdsource a translation. Frag, can you pull out all the graphical tiles that need translating? The text itself is another issue altogether. The graphical tiles are the best to deal with up front since they are the most critical to playing the damn game.

Well, I already just ripped the tiles from MM1 that say "Attack", "Shift", "End" etc.  I can spruce those up a little bit, if need be.  I also redid the title screen.  I'll take a look and see what other graphics that need translated I can rip, but I think I'll be hard pressed to find them.  The rest is a lot of text.  I also made a quick list of all the new units.  I'm not sure what they were renamed to in the PC version, but I know their alphanumeric designations.

New units
---------
KM-55 air mine
SR-22 2-shot artillery
TB-10 armored bomb
HA-55 ???
GX-97 new robot?

For whatever it's worth, here are the unit's names from Base Nectaris (both names are used):

KM-55 - KrazeeTrigger / AirTrig
SR-22 - AtlasShrugged / Shrug
TB-10 - TimeBomb / T-Bomb
HA-55 - KanonFodder / Kanon
GX-97 - Teknik

I believe those are just the names that the site owner gave 'em.  Here's the more literal translation of the eight new units (from here):

BT-90 - Gaadin
BT-91 - Majuu
BT-92 - Burenaa
SR-22 - Girumoa
GX-97 - Fakuta
TB-10 - Maito2
KM-55 - Rappuru

Exactly, I made up those goofy names many years ago :)

Here is an earnest attempt at translating the 8 new items.

I thought some of the literal translations were boring/lacked continuity with unit names from localized Military Madness.

I made it clear that those were my own goofy nicknames, of course.

The funny thing is Hudson used some of my wacky names! :) I don't know how consistent Hudson has been with the localized names across iOS, XBOX, PS3, old mobile phones, etc., but here's info from iPhone version:

HA-55 Kanon --> Gauntlet (I prefer my "KanonFodder")
IMG

KM-55 - Rappuru --> AirTrigger (They used my name! Woohoo! Well, I called it "AirTrig". I also called this "KrazeeTrigger" because I wanted to build on the "K" in "KM-55"))
IMG

TB-10 - Maito2 --> T-Bomb (Time Bomb) (My name. It's pretty obvious, though.)
IMG

GX-97 - Fakuta --> Teknic (Yay! They used my name)
IMG

SR-22 - Girumoa --> Aegis (My lame "Atlas Shrugged" was to maintain continuity with MM's "Atlas". Also, for the record, I am politically opposed to Ayn Rand.)

BT-92 - Burenaa --> BioHawk (Oh, dear Lord! I prefer my corny "Rodan-sans-wings"...or maybe not.)
IMG

BT-91 - Majuu --> BioHulk (Come on, you know you prefer "BioBeast")
IMG

BT-90 - Majuu --> BioSpyder ("DaddyLongLegs"? I don't know what I was thinking, but it's better than "BioSpyder"!.)
