Not a bad little game, I've been playing this and Bare Knuckles 2 and 3.  While it doesn't have the polish BK has, I kinda like it.

What other brawlers do you all recommend? Obviously there's DD II and there was another one with a woman as the main character. Can't remember the name.

I haven't played it, but Galaxy Deka Gayvan looks pretty cool! Been meaning to pick it up.

CrackTiger

River City Ransom is cool.

That would be the one! The backgrounds pop out more on that one than Crest.  Is it any good?

That's one thing I like on BK 2, the bkgs are gorgeous!

I like River City for sure, just never got the crazy fandom behind it.

Nazi NecroPhile

Though it hardly ranks among the best of the best brawlers, I really like Riot Zone / Crest of Wolf; it's just too bad that it's so easy and that there isn't a two-player mode.  Those are two pretty big flaws, but at least the backgrounds are nicely detailed, the sprites quite large (if stiffly animated), and the tunes memorable.

No!  Not even in a "it's cheesy, bad fun" kind of way.

Man I had a little hope. It looked decent on videos; more of an emu type game to check out?

Tatsujin

now only DD2 is left to mention :)

Galaxy Deka Gayvan is neat, but gets very repetitive over the time, and after approx. 45 min. when you have seen it quite long enough, you wish to push run & sel.

i quite like ane-san, esp. for its unique style and quite colorful graphics. but they def. should have made it fullscreen and add some parallax.

I like Ane-san, I think it's fun, & IIRC I think it's 2 player, but when  you die, you can't use that character anymore.  Galaxy Deka Gayvan is cool, but I remember it being fairly tough, unless I'm remembering a different game?

Where from and when do you get it?

I had forgotten how much I like Streets/BK  while I like the updates to the characters moves and abilities in #3, #2 is still my favorite.

roflmao

I'm a little surprised at how much this has gone up on ebay in the past handful of months.  I picked up Crest of Wolf last November for $10 and now the cheapest one listed is more than twice that.  :-k

You can get Riot Zone for about that price. (though this is the PC Engine area so maybe no one here cares about picking up the US version)

It's a fun game, but I don't think it's nearly as good as Streets of Rage.  It would have been so much better if it was 2 player.  Still, I play it probably more than I ought to admit. :)

spenoza

I am constantly surprised at how bad the animation is. This is a SuperCD game. There's enough room in there for well-animated sprites. Seriously.

The walk cycles are horrible, specially when compared to Streets. The fighting animations aren't too bad. The enemies feel a tad stiffer on Wolf. It's like Wolf needed just a little more umph to get it to that I gotta have it lvl.

Anyone doing homebrew brawlers for the PCE yet?

Tatsujin

Little is known that crest of wolf was a straight arcade port to the pc engine :)

The arcade walking animations for the main characters are much more fluid. Still not great, but better.

I haven't played through the arcade, but it's supposed to be a different game, with only similar characters, setting, visuals, etc. Westone did the arcade, I don't know if they handled the PCE version.

It does look and feel like an unfinished CD2 game. Has anyone tried firing it up using a System 2 card?

I hadn't thought to try that before, but I just did.  I'm assuming the message it displayed was something along the lines of "Hey dumbass, try using a System 3.0 card!."  I can't read moon speak, but I could take a picture of it if anyone would like.

Tatsujin

Sure the arcades visuals are looking better, but iirc they are quite similar in style and game play.

Lol, i dont excuse anything here. Its a rather crappy brawler imo, but at least its still a pce game
which makes it halfway awesome :D

Mindless Street of Rage / Final Fight style brawlers on the PCE/Duo are very limited.

> Crest of Wolf/Riot Zone - haven't tried
> Ane-san - its like a FF but with UGLY (and I mean grotesque nasty) punk chicks.  your characters are chosen from ugly punk chicks, and your enemies are punk chicks.  it sucks as a game and the idea is even worse.
> Downtown Nekketsu (River City Ransom) - your best opition.  similar to the NES version but with better music and with speech.  very good game but rare and costly.
> Galaxy Deka - looks amazing, but in actual gameplay like Tats already said, gets boring REAL quick.  not very creative and not fun at all.
> Tenchi o Warau (dynasty wars) - this one is awesome, but you're on horseback all the time a la romance of 3 kingdoms setting.
> Vigilante!!  - dont forget this one.  oldie but still classic and great.

I really hadn't seen enough comparison to the arcade version in the past. It seems like most people who reviewed the Turbo version were unaware there was an arcade version.

soop

Ok, my games arrived, and I played through crest of wolf.  An odd game.  Not unenjoyable, and at least some of the enemies pose a challenge.  I thought it might have been 2 player, because surely the PC engine can handle more sprites than that?  I'm really annoyed that they wasted sprites with punch effects, and if those mice are sprites rather than dynamic tiles, it's a waste.

Overall however, if the PCE can only handle 4 of those nice big sprites on screen, looks like any attempt to remake Final Fight will be doomed to failure.  I played the XBLA version, and there are way too many enemies, even without all the weapons, to make a halfway decent port :(

But what makes this game better, is that I played Golden Axe afterwards.  That game is just broken beyond repair.  The main problem is that you can only target one enemy at a time, meaning when you're attacking one, the other can just walk right through your attacks and nail you.  Couple this with the fact that there's no state of invulnerability = death.  Weird that they spent so long on the intro to end up with this jerky small-sprite low-enemy broken mess.

Possibly the worst PCE game I've played.

arcade Final Fight on the other hand is a quite different caliber tho (sprite wise).

true; I did some calculations on a final fight sprite though; I'm assuming the CoW sprites are similar dimensions (without accurately measuring them) I came out with similar numbers.  In fact, the ideal sprite size would be 32 x 64, which would give 8 sprites onscreen.  I just loaded up a Haggar sprite sheet, and Haggar's regular stance looks to be 3.5 times bigger than that.

So if you did make Final Fight, it would have to be with tiny sprites, which kind of defeats the point.

I will leave that to the pro coders, since the pce prooved itself not for the first time as much more
capable as its pure tech specs would tell/allow.

I have to go back to it again. I remember in more than one occasion that there were at least 4 to 5 enemy sprites on screen at one time, I think it could handle it; and the size of CoW's sprites seem to be just fine.

China Warrior is a good example of sprite sizing that can be done.

hmm coders, devs, artists! could BarkeKnuckles and/or Final Fight be done on the PCE?

I had it in mind when I played through, and I never saw more than 3 enemy sprites on-screen.  A Streets of Rage-a-like would be doable though, as evinced by... someone in the other thread (in PCE Dev).  Need to look at The Kung Fu though.
