"At the same time, Sega released their 16-bit console, the Sega Genesis which pulled ahead of the TurboGrafx-16 fairly quickly due to better marketing, more 3rd party games, and a stronger mascot."

This is incorrect. Sega did not have Sonic to US shores until well into 1991, and before that, they had no mascot whatsoever, just that retarded little marketing gimmick "Genesis Does What Nintendont".
Turbo Badass Rank: Janne (6 of 12 clears)
Conquered so far: Sinistron, Violent Soldier, Tatsujin, Super Raiden, Shape Shifter, Rayxanber II

Alex Kidd was my unofficial candidate for Sega's mascot until Sonic came along. :)

Although "Wonderboy" would have been a good choice as well.

Alex Kidd certainly was their mascot, at least in Europe. He wasn't particularly popular, though.

Indeed, it's AV time. Check out: IMG! Sir, the door was open.

Opa Opa was more of an 'official' mascot for Sega for a short time as well, probably more so than Alex Kidd.
