@GTV reviews the Cosmic Fantasy 1-2 Switch collection by Edia, provides examples of the poor English editing/localization work. It's much worse for CF1. Rated "D" for disappointment, finding that TurboGrafx CF2 is better & while CF1's the real draw, Edia screwed it up...

Surely, any self-respecting PCE magazine should feature a Yuna foldout. : D I'm sure Ark would agree.
Or even better, a Yuna feature. Yes. That's it.

I've reworked the sample page - it now fits on a double page spread. After printing out the previous one, the text and images just looked too big, and page space is valuable when every extra sheet bumps up the price.

Really dig the layout. It captures that retro feeling and it adds the "MOAR images" I always craved from magazines back then.  Those poor Famitsu scanning rouges.

Just found out that Pixel Nation has vanished off the face of the earth - my plan was to use them to publish the mag. Seems unlikely to happen now unless people are willing to pay a high price for it, which is unlikey given the niche nature of the mag.

I work in a printers but even near cost, the price for doing a decent 100 page magazine is stupidly high in the kind of short runs I would want.

I'm trying to think of new ways to approach this. My current idea is to have a 'deluxe' printed binder, then have 'sets' of pages about A5 (Half A4/Letter size) on thick paper that are hole punched. Each new set of pages could be added to the existing one and stored in the binder until it fills to a single volume.

So I could release a pack of, for example, 50 pages at one time, then another 50 later etc. That might lower costs compared to a bigger printed and perfect bound magazine and would be kind of unique. The binder would be optional as they probably won't come cheap (I imagine around £25+P&P).

Does this sound a bit tatty, or fun and unique?

Here's a crude mockup but I think it could work. Perhaps I could offer a budget folder as well as a deluxe version for containing the pages.

I request a holographic version of your fanzines, in a binder.

Thank you. IMG

SERIOUS: Print a mini-version of the magazine (half-size) and readers can supply their own magnifying glass (but we could slap PCE stickers on the magnifying glasses to make them fancier).

I'm not joking about half-size. I'd go quarter-size, but them you really would need a large magnifying lens.

INSPIRATION: I had an ancient reference dictionary that had two volumes + case + drawer w/ magnifying glass (the print was so tiny, the pages so thin, the volumes were over-sized, too).

Would an option be to make a once a year publication with all of say "2012"/"2013" and so on in hard copy?

Considering my lack of output in the last year...

I'm more likely to make it volumes - each volume would fill a folder and be comprised of several 'issues' (e.g. blocks of 50 pages each perhaps)

I saw some pics of the french "pc engine bible" limited edition. It's two books I think in the shape of a IFU system. I would love to see something like your magazines in a compiled collection like that.

I found out recently that Pixel Nation seems to have vanished so not at the moment. You used to be able to download them direct from my page on issuu.com but I think the option is gone now. If you're desperate I could email them to you.

Yeah so would I, but it would cost ££££££££££££££££££££££££ to produce unfortunately.

From the figures I looked at today, 100 pages (50 sheets) would likely cost somewhere in the realm of £15 - £20. That's not including postage or any binders. Sounds quite pricey compared to an off the shelf magazine, but when you're probably only making 20-30 copies there's not much I can do to reduce that.

Question for everyone - should I keep the printed version to just reviews, or shall I also feature things like the 'Top Banana' (versus matches) and 'Final Countdown' (top 10s)?

Definitely, definitely keep the extra content, it gives it personality, I'm a big fan of the quirky UK humour, in fact for me it's exactly that, that makes the fanzine great.

At the moment I've managed to fit in all the reviews, all the versus (Top Banana) and Top 10s and a couple of other random pages and still have 13 pages to fill, so it looks like I can add some exclusive extra reviews just for this collection.

I'm currently thinking about how best to approach the binder artwork, probably a collage of sorts, but I've not decided yet.

They're geared up for newspaper style printing only (tabloid size on poor quality newpaper and don't offer stitching or bleeds) so that wouldn't really be any good. I'm at least aiming for decent, heavy silk paper to acheive a certain level of quality and sturdiness.

No, but there are too many hurdles including the fact that they're in America and I'm in the UK. I can get my printing pretty much at cost price so I don't think anyone stands a chance of matching it, particularly when I can have complete control over the printing with no extra postage (of samples or proofs) that forces up the price. The only way I could get the per unit price cheaper is to have a load printed in bulk, and there just isn't enough demand for that.

_Paul

Status update on this project: I've abandoned the 'binder' idea. Current plans are to make a 104 page book (A5 size), which will be wire-bound with an acetate sheet front and rear to add durability. I think this is the best way to do it and keeps costs at a minimum. All that's left to do is the contents/copyrights pages, and fill 4 pages at the back with something. Considering the guide to reading Japanese game names for the 2 final pages.

Before Christmas? Erm, maybe, depends how quick I can sort out these last few bits.
