12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

That's why we need more members like CAS—so we won't feel like we are the oldest bastards here. I still have a hard time seeing lilgrafx (who is 4.5 years old, max) posting comments here. I wasn't nearly as literate as he is when I was 4 years old.

Does it help that I learned how to read while playing Dragon Warrior at age 5? :P

Bah. Whippersnappers. I was 27 in 1989. Bought a tg16 that Christms, or the next.

QuoteDoes it help that I learned how to read while playing Dragon Warrior at age 5?
That's partly how my nephew learned to read, though not on Dragon Warrior.
His first grade teacher flipped when he read Winnie The Pooh to her. She thought he memorized it.
So she gave him some old kids reader she had, and almost died when he read that to her.

("Did you know Jason could Read?!?!".  "Of course he can. Did you think he was stupid?".
"Most kids his age don't even know their ABC's!". "That's their problem..." )

Whew I'm not the oldest  :-"

I was 23 when the TG-16 came out so if I rule out the 100 year old (ish) which I think is safe  :D I would be second oldest after TheOldMan.

TheClash603

I was six when the TG16 came out.

I may have been young, but my initials were definitely already prominently featured at my local arcades.

Marll

I was 11 on that date, but turned 12 in October of that year and got one for Christmas. It was the ONLY thing on my list and the only thing that mattered to me at the time. A friend and I were at the Fred Meyer in Marysville, WA and caught my mom walking out with it, so I knew I was getting one before that day even though she teased me saying that since I'd seen it she took it back to the store.

The next year I got the TG-CD with Y's Book 1 & II and Sherlock Holmes. It was a huge surprise because $400 for my family at the time was quite expensive. My dad always like to go overboard on Christmas though because his always sucked as a kid.

I think you see some diverse ages because while some people actually had TG16 marketed in their region, some of us including me never heard about the TG16/PCE until much later. Emulation and the internet is how I learned of its existence probably back in 1999 or 2000. And you can thank Castlevania for that. It got me interested in the system and since I've played many other great games for the platform.

Back when the TG16 was alive, I was busy playing either the Atari 800 home computer, NES and later SNES. If I'd have seen a Turbo DUO playing Lords of Thunder back then I would definitely have wanted one. I recall they had some promo where they tried to promote the DUO with that game.

Oh, and I was 10 when the TG came out.  Coincidentally that was the year I got an NES. :)  Then I patiently (or not so patiently) waited 5 years later to spend my hard earned moneys on a Turbo Duo when I was 15!!
Jossshhhhh...Legendary TurboTrollX-16: He revenge-bans PCE Developers/Ys IV Localizers from PCE Facebook groups and destroyed 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Hmm... 16.  But I only got one when the DUO launched.

I was 12 when it came out and got it for my 13th birthday that october.

I was 20 in 1989.
Joined USMC right out of school, and was in S Korea by 89. Probably got my turbo 93 or so, used and with about 4 games.

EDIT: Please send me your LT if you haven't.  Thanks.

You can call me gramps !
I started playing video games, like millions of others, with space invaders, centipede and asteroid.
1st counsel of course was atari tennis. Lame as it may seem now, it was pretty amazing back then, burned quite a few hours bouncing that little ball around. Got a kick out of that tank game too.
Things progressed when "Joust" came around, me and my buddies were hooked on that damn thing, dropped fist fulls of quarters in that thing for weeks on end.

One day a neighbor says "hey, you want to play some mario ??" I said "mari-what ? Never heard of it, what is it" ? He was like, oh shit, you never heard of mario, well come and try this. So I got hooked on that for a while, but soon I was out and about in military service, and didn't have the time or inclination for any gaming.
When I was settled down a bit years later, I started thinking of getting a system, I dismissed the obvious, Nintendo, right away. Games were Ok, but everyone I knew that had one, the unit fried out sooner or later. They'd be blowing in them, shaking them, swabbing out the contacts with alcohol or spit, screen blinked, faded or went black ,, And I saw more than 1 guy get sick and tired of it and smash it against a wall. I had heard of TG, and heard the hoopla about being the 1st 16 bit system, and I always have been the type to root for the underdog, so Turbo it was - And I'd say I made a damn good choice.
Picked up a used unit with 4 games, and proceeded to build it to a collection of over 60, saved all the boxes ,,, Never looked back.

Alot of guys here bitch about the pricing trends of Turbo, I'm on the fence on that issue. But it shows 1 thing beyond a doubt - These games are in demand.
There is a strong market for them, which may increase, may decrease ,,, Whatever trends that develop in the months and years to come, TG has stood the test of time, and I am glad to have been an original part of that, and am glad to have the interest now, almost 2 decades down the road.

esteban

I am glad I am not the oldest one here. Ha! :pcgs:

However, I am still too old to have not played through all the games I thought I would have beaten by now  IMG

I was twelve when the TurboGrafx-16 came out and thirteen when I bought it after selling my NES and Master System.

turboswimbz

I was 6 months old when PCE was released and 2 when the TG16 came to the US.  My dad got one out of the news paper in 1990 with 8 games or so, he thought it was neat and would eventually be bigger than the nintendo, as the "future of video games" if only more people had realized this early on.  First game I ever played - Bonk's Adventure (take that mario), however based on the SNES they bought me just a few years later, they couldn't find turbo stuff at a reasonable price. Anyway, I never let the turbo die, been playing it on and off for 22 years now.  Not sure why, but there is something magical about the system.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)
BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere. You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

I was 9.  I didn't get a tg16 for a couple years tho.  A video rental store that rented them was stopping and had several brand new systems in the back that they kept in case one of the rental systems was damaged.  I scored one for $60 after doing many chores to raise the money.  It was probly '91 or '92.  I knew the first time I turned it on there was something special about the TG16.
