Background:

Back in September 2011, I purchased a Sharp 60" LED/LCD TV. 1080p, 240hz, 4,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Definitely an awesome TV to watch blurays on. I loved it. Fast forward to Feb 2012, and my wife and I were having an arguement, and as I walked over to the entertainment center to remove the bluray we were watching, I heard something "thunk" above my head. Slowly I looked upwards and noticed the TV was no longer on, and the remote was lying on the ground. Thats right... she threw the remote at me, missed, and hit the screen. Holy fucking shit.

I attempted to turn the TV back on, but alls I got was a black screen, with what looked like an impact mark and colored lines running from top to bottom where the remote had collided. There was no damage to the screen, however. So I assumed that part of the LCD panel behind the screen was damaged. So, instead of just chalking it up as a loss, I'm gonna try to take it apart and see exactly whats damaged, and try to repair or replace the affected parts. If I cant, well, it was trash to begin with anyway. So far I have removed all the screws, and power cable, and am gonna lift the back of the TV off to get to the internals. Heres a photo of it lying on my twin bed in my gameroom:

Has anyone on here ever torn into one of these before? Any tips or advice to lend on such a project?

I have repaired LCD TVs before but only when the acreen is still good and internal boards are bad. In your case you are going to have to try and find a replacement screen which can be really expensive. In my experience it would probably  be easier and cheaper for you to sell of all the internals of the TV on ebay. One board at a time. Then junk the screen and  buy your self a new TV.

I don't believe the actual screen is broken, I ran a terrycloth over the impact spot and it didn't get snagged on anything. Also, the outside of the TV looks perfect (no shatter marks, blemishes, etc), which is why I think the force of the impact was transferred through the screen and affected the internals.

Guess I'll find out as I get further into the disassembly

already upgraded... went for the 70 inch version

Got the back panel off, and removed the speakers, etc. Now I have to undo all 30 or so hold down tabs at once and can lift out the LCD panel

To be honest, I don't even remember. Alls I can say is that alcohol was involved and sometimes she gets a little hostile maybe 10% of the time when drunk. That night, I guess the odds were against me

I will admit my girlfriend has used these lines before:

"Keep pissing me off and I am going to throw out your video games."  and the "I am going start breaking things in your game room."

It has never happened, because she knows I am not opposed to murder.

Last time a girlfriend through a phone at me she made a hole in the wall.

well, Donna talked some weird shit sometimes when drunk - like the "I'l miss you when you're gone" moment years past.  but never hostile.

I think you're right, it can be salvaged, it's probably a loose connection, and it's interesting!

My wife said something similar... "youre just having fun taking something apart and seeing if you can fix it/put it back together again"

Sure... if it didnt cost me an arm and a leg... yeah... beeatch!

If you see colored lines, odd are the LCD is busted even if you didn't find any crack. Crack aren't obvious.

Sell the boards, get a new TV, buy a plexi sheet and cover the front.  It won't prevent another busted screen but it'd greatly reduce the risk of breaking it next time someone throws a remote.

And those who aren't married to stay single.  Cat or dog rarely throws remote at an expensive TV.

LOL, that sounds like the same kinds of threats my wife uses.  If I'm lucky through she'd just throw out my  Nintendo stuff   :3
