Hi all,
Can someone bring me up to speed on these two? I've been looking around to see if these were still available "new" knowing that I'm probably a few years late.

Implode is available for purchase in two separate areas of the MindRec site ($10 in one place, $25 in another) and the PayPal links are still active, but I held off after seeing the "Last Updated 2006" footer on their site.
MBDX I have not seen show up anywhere, not even on eBay.

I'd like to pick these two up if they won't cost an arm and a leg.

Lastly, any other TG/PCE homebrew that I should own, besides Insanity which I already have?

Thanks!
JP

Your best bet is to send BT an e-mail and ask if either of 'em is still available.  If not, keep watching eBay - they both pop up from time to time (more so for Implode).

As for other homebrew, those three titles are it so far for physical releases (except for proto hueys, but those aren't for sale), and there's also Tongueman's Logic from Chris Covell if you have a flash cart or wanna play on an emulator.  Coming soon is Mysterious Song from Rover and co., and somewhere down the road will be Atlantean and Pyramid Plunder from Ark's group.

I just bought mine from the site last year, so I am willing to bet they are still available at MindRec.

jperryss

Thanks guys. I've just sent them a message using their Contact Us page. I couldn't find an email addy for BT, but hopefully he'll see it and respond.

Yeah, but there are clearly 2010 updates at the top of the page. They've always kept the mindrec store updated and they responded quickly when I submitted a question on the Xymati page a while back. I'd say that you're safe to just go ahead and place your order.

Can't vouch for them, but www.gooddealgames.com seems to have Meteor Blaster in stock.

Then me sending MindRec a message instead of trying to buy is a win/win. If they respond, then great and maybe I can buy these titles directly from them.

If they don't respond, well, then I'm glad I didn't send them money. :D

Just as a heads up, Implode is a glass mastered disc while after having similar troubles to what Mysterious Song seems to have experienced, BT wound up just doing Meteor Blaster on CDR.

In case anyone's still following along....BT got back to me quickly and was able to locate both games in stock. Fast forward a week or so...

Nice to see MR still has copies of both. Boy do I wish they'd re-press Meteor Blaster on a proper CD.

Yep. I mean, you wouldn't know by looking at it until you flip it over and see that it's blue on the bottom. Pic here and here (not mine).

Yeah that Meteor Blaster killed my other Duo and got the eye stuck. Not cool at all, so Meteor Blaster is long overdue to get a proper printing.

We should all chip in $20 each or something to get enough for the pressing.  Once enough is raised, all donators get a copy and then the creator can sell the remainder of the pressed copies.  Maybe a bonus could be thrown in to entice some people to repurchase.

OldRover

As far as I know, Bt left the PCE scene behind long ago... so convincing him to have MBDX done up properly is probably a pipe dream. I offered to help with it a couple of years back but pretty much just got the brush-off. I can try talking to Fragmare about it though, but no promises.

Well, whatever the price of the official pressing is, we could do one of this kickstarter things.  Any donation in multiple of $20 gets you a pressed game.  This would work out because if the goal isn't reached, then it proves that the demand isn't there and Bt was right not to go forward with the project.  Additionally, anyone that donated would get their money back if the goal isn't reached.

However, if it was reached, I don't see how it could be an issue for the developers of the game.  Essentially they get a free stack of pressed discs.  They could just do a 30 day BIN for $20-$25 on ebay once they get the game and get a few $100 out of it, with little effort.

Just an idea...  perhaps a pipe dream as you said Rover.

Duo_R

Without Mindrecs blessing wouldn't that be kinda piracy?

My post implied we were asking them for their blessing and they would get all the pressed CDs.

The benefit would be mutual.  The community would get pressed discs and they would get a bunch of free pressed discs to make money off of in the future.  The could probably number 100 of them and people would go nuts to get a numbered reprint  That alone is $2,000 at $20 a pop, which more than makes up for the cost.

Dibs on #1, cause it was my idea :)

VestCunt

I asked if they might do a Meteor Blaster re-press in April of last year and BT said they had no plans to, but asking if they'd be willing to allow a kickstarter and see what happens is a good idea.

Now that I look at the email, he also mentioned that MB "sold out" after five years, which would explain why it's no longer in the store. They probably only have a few copies left, if anyone else is interested.

Ditto. After pushing my lens back into place I began to experience audio dropouts and longer load times and had to get a new lens. I'd recommend no one try to play Meteor Blaster in a black Duo.

BigusSchmuck

I like this idea ALOT. I would be more than willing to put in a $20 donation for a pressed copy of Meteor Blaster or for that matter bootleg pressed games that are rare and expensive like Beyond Shadowgate as mentioned in another thread. This would be a good place to start on something like this, as I'm pretty sure we have well over 100 members on this forum although I'm not sure we have 100 active members though...

OldRover

All MindRec would have to do is run the project files through OldMan's autocue utility and I bet MBDX would be ready to press... though if I were them, I'd spruce the game up a bit... time's passed, and the bar for homebrew has been decidedly raised.

I just caught up with Bt on IRC... he says he's not saying no to the idea, and that a kickstarter or indiegogo campaign is probably the best way to go about this. It will most certainly gauge interest.

Did he give any indication of the amount of money needed to "kickstart" it?

He didn't really say, but I would assume enough to have it pressed... that way, there's no out-of-pocket expense to him, and the game gets a proper release for those who've invested in it. He said that he was swimming in CDRs from the last attempt, so that really put a damper on things. However, we were talking about minimum orders and whatnot, and he seems to be curious for more info so this is a good sign. :)

I'd be down with an actual pressing too. I'm not about to risk fuckin up my duo on a cdr!

While I can't speak for MS, I just got some pressed music discs, with full color, 6 panel inlays. Really professional. We bought 1000, and paid ~$2000 for the pressing. Not sure if it's more expensive to do data discs, but I'd imagine not. This was through DiscMakers btw

From NationWide Disc's online quote thingy it's $719 for 300 discs with full color disc, jewel case, and full color tray and four panel insert (or $809 for 500 or $869 for 1000), and figure another $100 or so for shipping.

If BT doesn't have the time (or doesn't want to devote the time) to package, label, and ship games out, I'd be willing to take care of it for him.  It'd go well with the booties and save people a couple bucks on shipping.

Lets kickstart this summabitch, $1,200 should get it all set.  $25 gets you a numbered kickstart special copy of the game, which is $20 for the game and $5 for shipping.  I am sure 60 people will get in on it, people love that numbered shit.  Rest of the games can go to the creator to do what he pleases with.  No doubt in my mind we can get it done!

You have to take into account Kickstarter fees.

300 discs is plenty. We don't have that many active members and this project should be as cheap as possible to increase our chance of making the goal.  If Mindrec wants to pay extra for more discs, that's their business.

Meteor Blaster had a 6-panel insert. Factoring that into the Nationwide calculator creates an estimate of about $900 (shipped) for 300 discs. We can raise that if 45 members pay $20 + $5 to mail their individual copies. 45 contributions is a lot easier than 60.

Think it could be accomplished within this forum? 45 doesn't "seem" like a lot, but I guess it probably is for a site like this.

Yeah, but then you have to deal with paypal fees, or someone getting audited after receiving 45 suspicious paypal "gifts", or the hassle of refunding everyone if the goal isn't met, or another mess like the MSR preorder debacle when the project took longer than expected. According to their FAQ, the Kickstarter fee is 5%. For $900, that would only be $45, or one more contributor. It's a small price to pay for convenience and peace of mind.
QuoteAlso, where do the other 255 copies go?  :D
Mindrec could keep 'em and sell 'em for all I care. The forty-five contributors could get shiny stickers and numbering like the Signature Edition.

Yeah, I think that Mindrec will get on board if it means 250ish free pressed games, which it could potentially make $100s on.  They could real easily put an evergreen ebay listing at $25 a pop and probably make a few hundred dollars with minimal effort.  I see this as a win/win in every regard.

Kickstarter has some pretty steep fees (a total of 9.1% on $25), so I'm tempted to bankroll it myself (at least offer it to BT anyhow).  At $1000 total, it'd only take 49 other guys to buy one for me to get my money back, and I don't think that's much of a risk.
