I want this, anyone have any idea how hard this would be to do? any one willing to take it on?

I've been wanting to tackle that project for quite some time.  That's easily a whole day's work for me, though.  I always thought it would be tool to use a project box to make a consolized GG, wired up to use an SMS controller.  You can just put the start button on the console itself.  Of course if I did all that, it would take more than one day, probably.

I'm only looking for the tv-out part of the mod. It is supposed to support rgb+sync. i could output my gamegear to my upscaler via vga cable then to my lcd. i would imagine it would look extremely cool. would basically just use the game gear as a controller.

kazekirifx

I got the premade kit for this. Hope to have time to work on it some day.

Do you have a link of where to get such a kit? This mod looks a bit out of my league building from scratch.

kazekirifx

Yeah.

You have to E-mail the guy. When I got one earlier this year, he said I got the last one. I hope he's made more since then, but I have a feeling the link to this page that was put up on Cinemassacre a half-year or so ago generated some considerable interest.

I'm not going to post it here, but all you have to do is follow the "Return to INDEX" link at the bottom of the page. The E-mail is at the bottom of the index page.

HercTNT

Thanks for the info, he got back to me and said he would have some in stock in a few weeks.

kazekirifx

Awesome. Let us know how it turns out. Not sure when I'll ever get around to doing mine.

CGQuarterly

I just e-mailed him as well.  I didn't realize that someone was selling kits.  That makes it way easier.  I'm glad that no one bought my Game Gear collection when I had it up for sale.  Making a consolized version will be a cool winter project.

Chris

How much are the kits

I have a game gear that appears to be on it's last legs.  It works "sometimes" (games take a couple of tries to finally work) and screen is pretty dim.  No sound either.
If anybody wants it as a project/guinea pig, let me know.  All I ask is shipping.

PunkCryborg

sounds like it needs a cop job

Yeah, but if you use it to add TV-out to your GG, or use it to make a consolized GG, how much would that then be worth?  Unless he wants like $100 for the kit, I'll probably order one.

agreed, game gear games are incredibly cheap around me, and i'd actually play it if it was "consolized"

That's how I feel.  The GG has such a crappy screen that I just don't want to play it.  But if it was consolized and set up to use an SMS controller (or whatever,) that would be pretty sweet.

Excellent  =D> =D> =D>

Yea, like i said, if i can use the gamegear as a controller to play the games on big screen i will be set. the game gear does have some great games.

Frank_fjs

Personally I'd love one of these:

IMG

Yep, some guy consolised a Game Gear.

CGQuarterly

That's way beyond my abilities.  I was just going to put it in a generic metal project box from the local electronics hobby shop.

don't know why companies dont copy shit like this and do more retro stuff. it would sell. look at atari flashback.

I think he charged me like $70. I gladly paid. Just wish sega had put out some sort of official means to do this in the early '90s.

HercTNT

i emailed him and he said he would be getting some in, in a week. that was almost two weeks ago. i sent him a follow up email and have not heard from him. i hope he comes through.

Maxwar

Thats pretty nice. I have a dead game gear i found in the garbage. I think all it needs is  a full recap. If the recap job works im gonna see if i can get this kit too.

HercTNT

boards are now available here  http://members.iinet.net.au/~stinkyfist/reviletim/ggtv/ggtv.htm

He sent out this to me in an email earlier today.

Maxwar

Hah, thats nice, Price is decent too and it can output S-video

Guess ill recap the GG ASAP before he runs out of those boards again :p

Duo_R

Its $50 AU which almost comes to $50 USD.

i don't have good soldering skills or else I'd buy the board and do it myself.

turbokon

I just picked up one, been waiting for this.

thesteve

i still say a proper board needs a scaler.
it can be a single frame scaler based on the GG native res.
think of this, take the native res (dont know what it is)
feed the output from the GG to a frame buffer.
read the frame buffer at a slower pixel rate + line doubling.
can be done with 0.5 to 1 frame delay.

Maxwar

Well, i have not yet recapped my GG but i was not going to wait till you guys bought all of them pretty things!

thesteve

the GG does have a blanking signal and pixel clock, that would make sampling easy

turbokon

So do you think you can design a better pcb steve?

i missed that one

Maxwar

I think the japanese guy who made a SMS lookalike for his consolized GG included a scaler.

Sure a scaler would be nice but for my part just getting a gg to display on a TV will be an awesome start.

kazekirifx

If you're willing to shell out the money, you can use an XRGB or XVGA from Micomsoft for the scaling. That's what one dude did.

thesteve

the consolized one isnt scaled

Maxwar

I remembered he had full screen pictures but apparently he uses an external SONY DSC-1024HD.

kazekirifx

Personally, I don't think it really needs to be scaled. Might as well play it at the native resolution, even if it doesn't use the whole screen.
I have an XVGA-1Pro, but I'm not really planning to use it with my TV Game Gear once its finished.

HercTNT

Ran into a huge problem, went to install the board and his instructions don't cover the asic for the majesco game gear. Anyone out there think they can help out?

I think if you contact tim he would probably be able to help you out if no one here can.

Yea, i'm being a dummy. i planned on contacting him anyways. currently he is going through some his rez photos i have taken of the game gear and is working on a solution.
