2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

..a new commercial PCE system, what should it be look like and capable of?

1. 100% compatible to any media for PCE and TG-16 systems (hueys, turbochips, CD, SCD, ACD, SGFX (Super Huey), any unofficial CDs).
2. A best as possible upscaled and scanlined HDMI output, for the best picture possible on modern TV sets.
3. Still be able to output oldskool analogue video like AV, S-Vid and RGB.
4. Compatible to all available controllers. Prefered with two or more controller ports.
5. The Design should be something like the DUO. It was already nearest perfect.
6. I'm not sure if this would be a very good Idea, but anyway kinda nice to have for hombru scene etc. stuff. A SD card-slot for loading any PCE roms and CD images.

others?

What you just described would be my dream system.

What about adding the ability to play PC-FX games as well?  And a MUCH larger memory bank. :D

Tatsujin

A larger memory bank is a very good point.
PC-FX compatibility would probably rise its price into a non-feasbility state..lol.

adding to your first point,  it might be nice to have an on screen bios selection when booting up a cd game to ensure 100% compatibility and also so you can view the wrong card warning screens

also, why not just make the controllers rf wireless at this point? the existing cables have always been too short anyway.

Would be even better if scanlines could be turned off. I like my pixels raw, so to speak

...never really understood the love for scanlines. They can help things look sharper, yes. But they're in the way (or rather, between) of what I want to see.
CHECKPOINT!

A small pc that boots straight into something like mednafen with a fancy load screen to pick system (Turbob, LA, or PC-FX), loading roms and isos from SD or internal HDD.

If you want something more 'real', just buy a RGB modded Duo, XRGB converter thingy, tap and controllers.

I would want it to look like the original white PC Engine, perhaps a bit taller to allow for a CD input slot in the bottom half.

* New 6-button controllers with slots for removable memory cards. Like a miniature MB128. Like the N64, but with more space. Increasing the Duo's internal bank wouldn't work unless it was so huge it could hold saves for virtually every game. Even then, that wouldn't solve the problem of having to turn the deck on every few weeks.

* Controllers with both pads and thumbsticks for the analog games.

* +1 on LD-ROMs and a bios select screen.

* Automatic region detection for Hucards.

* Keith Courage... BUILT IN!!! Mmwhahaaha

* Hell, stick the Duo battery pack and mini monitor in there too.
I'm a cunt, always was. Topic Adjourned.

Yeah, it should be able to handle these via the SD card, else it would become just stupid big :P

If it has the ability to play roms then what is the point? Meaning if that's what you want to do then just fill up a computer with roms and hook it up to your TV. Same thing.

I did this for a few years when I had first sold off my original TG16 collection. It ended up getting boring fast because I didn't own the actual game or system anymore. Meaning I would flip from game to game never giving it much time because whenever I wanted to I could just pick another one.

Tatsujin

that's exctly the not-point of this whole meaning. It should be a perfect hardware replacement (no emulation) with the best supported video out for todays TV sets.

It should be able to play every possible PCE/TG16 media ex-work.

I feel the same way about emulation.

Me, I'd just want a low powered portable SGX on a chip that takes hueys.
