Well, damn, I was ignorant about the labor practices at Goodwill.

I always assumed folks were being compensated fairly. How naive.

Sadly, I'm not surprised by the outrageous salaries executives and __________ get paid: countless ministries, charities and non-profit organizations are structured like for-profit corporations (power and money in hands of management).

In all seriousness, I don't know why anyone needs to take home $1.1 million annually especially CEO's of what are considered charitable organizations.  Shit like this, articles like this, are the reason I no longer blindly donate to charities.  Instead, Mrs. Quid and I go out and purchase groceries for needy families and deliver them to their front doors.  At least this way we know where the money has gone.

On a similar note, this piece unearths the worst charities in America in terms of the percentage of donations that ends up helping the needy. They're downright scams that play off the names and reputations of well-known and actually good organizations. The worst offender is the Kids Wish Network (a name meant to confuse donors with the Make-A-Wish Foundation) that spent a whopping $240,000 (1%) of the $18.6 million that it raised in 2012 on actually helping kids.

This is why I stick with the Salvation Army Stores.  They are way better, treat workers better, have better prices for people in need for getting stuff, and have way more outreach.  I never liked goodwill and knew they did stuff like this.

It doesn't seem like such a bad idea. It would save someone many car trips, of going from one goodwill to another, seeing what each store has. Most goodwill stores already check for the price of stuff on ebay, anyway, before putting it on the floor. I pretty much gave up on finding anything interesting with video games, after the year 2000 or so.

I'd visit one of these grid stores.

The last time I went to a thrift store was last summer or fall, looked around, and there wasn't even much in the way of books like there used to be. I think they sell most of their books to the bulk book buyers, like Thrift Books.

It was an interesting time, when I could walk into a goodwill, up until 1997 or 1998, and find 100+ Atari games for sale because someone just dumped off their collection, or son's collection. There was that time I bought 50+ MAD Magazine paperback books. Before ebay, goodwill had more surprises.


I've not been to a thrift store at all this year, but reading this thread, I think I'll go to one in the next few weeks. The older one, that's more dilapidated than others, and doesn't have the same foot traffic as the "nicer" ones.

I just have a problem with Goodwill as a whole, I guess. I go to thrift stores all the time and Goodwill's prices are higher than local mom and pop stores. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Would be cool to have a guarantee that you'd find games in a store like this, but the whole idea is meh to me.

Man, I wasn't aware of that Goodwill "Grid" store.  That might be the most messed up thing I see all day!  I don't go to Goodwill much.  There is a chain of thrift stores in my area called "Unique" that I prefer.  Not that I find much.  But, the one thing those stores are still great for:  CRT's.  Piles of them to be found in some of those places.  You can still pick up a decent one at a thrift store around here for $5.00 or under.

It's sad that they've been hoarding stuff for months (years?) to stock such stores, paying warehouse space to store it all, and now paying for another store front.  I bet they could've priced everything at half of what they're asking now, already sold it at their existing stores, and earned just as much profit with the lowered overhead.

So I was at a Goodwill last weekend (okay like 4 of them) and apart from that big ass tv I mentioned in some other thread I felt I woudl add this...


The last Goodwill I visited on Sunday had a treasure trove of NES, and SNES goodies all in one lot..

BUT

they were behind glass and you couldn't buy them..


noooo you needed to bid on them (starting at $240) for the lot. with the bid ending sometime this month.....

I lookedat what was there...a NES, and SNES, a Genesis and a few random games (nothing bad but nothing excting warrenting a price tage of it's starting bid.

Needless to say I passed ......


Last time (about a year or two ago) I saw a Nintendo lot in a Goodwill in Austin, TX go for auction along with other "high dollar" stuff...it was not nearly as nice of stuff as what I saw at this other Goodwill in San Antonio, TX, BUT I went to the auction that was heled that weekend...made a trip out of it...drove to Austin, TX which was about 2 1/2 hours away......and started to big...but once it broke into the $120 range I gave up.........that little Nintendo lot (honeslty nothing to interesting) went for $200 ish....

So yeah....I don't know...I just to love going to Salvatoin Army and Goodwill....you'd find really interesting furniture that can be made to look great, sometimes really nice things from the 50's and 60's (to me) for a song....

but it seems that everything get's checked by ebay.

It's starting to get frustrating at thrift stores. Find something game related MAYBE one out of every ten times I go to a store. I will still continue to go though as it's fun looking for stuff. I have other hobbies and things I'm looking out for so it still makes the trips worthwhile...sometimes.

I agree. There was a GW store on eBay that was offering Best Offer on a 12.99 game. I offered $8 . He declined the offer and said it wasn't fair. I said that the game is a donation so any money should be better than no money. And revenue now is better than revenue later from a business standpoint.
