12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

With digital gaming being all the rage, I miss all the awesome stuff that used to come in some games. What were your favorite inserts?

To me it was as simple as looking at Zelda's or Marios manuals or the fold out maps in some RPG's

I have also seeing some IMPRESSIVE JP collateral for simple games that would make most modern releases go to the corner and cry.

Always wanted to feel one of those up. To see if it helps with my carpal tunnel of course.

I'd have to say my favorite inserts have to be from the original Final Fantasy for NES. That game came with a lot of awesome stuff that really made you feel like you were in for quite a ride before you even turned on the system. A partial strategy guide? Not one, but TWO double-sided charts!? It has a lot of nostalgia value for me, and now I will tell you why, even though you didn't ask.

I remember my cousin Brent had the game when I was little, and I was very intrigued by it. I would re-read that manual/strategy guide over and over. Then he let me play, but made me SWEAR never to go to the Inn as that would overwrite his save game. One time I ignored him, because I thought I was smart, and decided that if I didn't hold reset while turning off the game, it wouldn't save. I was wrong. I was a stupid kid. I overwrote his game. Brent was pissed.

Oh, well. He was only at the Earth Cave anyway. No big loss.

My favorite "insert" was the map from TG-CD Ys I &II. Actually, now that I think about it, I was even more impressed by the miniature Roda Tree Nuts that were included with Ys I & II. A cluster of tiny, brown nuts stuck on the map insert. Unfortunately, a miniature replica of the Roda Tree itself wasn't included. Oh well.

Off the top of my head, my favorite extras are the Yuna HuVIDEO disc, the Sherlock Holmes newspapers, and the map/soundtrack/art book bundled with Ys Seven limited edition.

With you on the Sherlock Holmes papers. Also, gotta love the encyclopedia that came with Carmen Sandiego.
Didn't one of the NES RPGs have a manual you needed to dip in water or something?  I like the items that force some kind of interactivity. Well played.
