RIP to BT Garner of MindRec.com... BT passed away early 2023 from health problems. He was one of the top PCE homebrew developers and founder of the OG Turbo List, then PCECP.com. Condolences to family and friends.

beside a top10 PCE is way too short for an amazing system that the PCE is, not even bad considering that niche games like gomola have made it into it.

but no gate of thunder, winds of thunder, star parodier, nexzr etc?

Sega does what Nintendon't, but only NEC does better than both together!^^
<Senshi> Tat's i'm going to contact the people of Hard Off and open a store stateside..

roflmao

That wouldn't be *my* top 10, but those are all excellent picks. :)

CrackTiger

It's neat that the PCE gets mentioned from time to time in various places, but that list reads like a typical "I just found out about the PC Engine 30 min" article. Complete with multiple out-of-context "8-bit" references, oblivious to the complete R-Type TurboChip (while still giving matter-of-fact recommendations to "collectors"), "Splatterhouse is hard to tell apart from the arcade", Genjin games were multi-plat because the Turbo tanked, SFII' can't use the tap or 6 button pads, Spriggan is a Super CD, etc.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Tatsujin

lol yeah. didn't even read that deep into the discriptions.

tons of erata to be found. also that spriggan mark 2 is not made by compile, when even the title screen says it. lol.

but the splatterhouse text is funny too. saying that the mcfly version is so superior, but pce comes close to arcade, when the marty version in fact is nothing different than the arcade version or even bit worser (graphically wise). autsch.

paul should hold an educational word with them.

Like B.T. said, it's cool seeing peeps enjoy the OBEY but would it kill 'em to do a little research and get their shit straight?

Exactly.

30-35 minutes, tops.

You gotta love this, I guess RetroGamer's quality hasn't improved much (I had a subscription back in 2005-2006, and while I totally enjoyed reading it, even I could find errors with many articles. I didn't have a clue on the UK computer scene, though, so I enjoyed those articles the most.

I liked the interviews with 80's developers the most, though.

I used to be a subscriber to Retro Gamer magazine for years, even though it wasn't perfect and made the odd mistake I still thought it was great to have a printed magazine in this era.

This other "Retro" magazine http://www.readretro.com also piqued my interest but I never got round to subscribing.

I'll check that out.

I'm a finicky person. If someone is writing about a domain I'm knowledgable in, I am rarely pleased. If someone is writing about a topic beyond my experience, though, I am much less worried about any flaws, even though they are probably there. IGNORANCE IS TRULY BLISS.

"Super Adventure Island" :\

Also, I think Parasol Stars is a better choice than Don Doko Don.

Nando

There are so many great threads here with so much insight about the history of our beloved Obey that it needs to be turned into an article and shared across the Internets.... Hmmmmm *gears spinning*

The PCFX Tome of Obey

Don Doko Don should not be in there.

CrackTiger

Retro Gamer was fun to read and like a European Gamefan.

Retro is the worst mag I've ever flipped through and caters to hip collectors.

These were printed in retro gamer like a year ago. They just posted this online now?
Its interesting, there has been some turbo/PCE activity in the RG forum lately. I think they might have more of a feature in the works. Coming soon?  Who knows.

awbacon

Glad bomberman 94 made the list. Second favorite behind Saturn bomberman

I feel like Rondo is too easy of a pick though. Love the game, but so many other good ones available (same with SF II)

They define overall quality with graphics, sound and play mechanics. They stood out then and now because they are great games. They became popular and stayed relevant because of all that.

Now if they had a, top ten undiscovered gems, then that's another story.

Any PCE top 10 without Dracula X in it would be a travesty.

It's not hard to think of a top ten or maybe even a top 20 without Drac X if you appreciate stuff like RPGs, War Sims and Shooters.

johnnymad

This thread is very helpful. I know all "top random number lists" are opinions but it at least points newer people to games that are highly regarded by some.

munchiaz

clearly some flaws in the articles for sure. Still nice to see some spot light on the PCE. They could just keep doing SNES top whatever list.

ultrageranium

I'd consider any article title starting with "Top something" or "Best whatever" being nothing but SEO link bait.

TheClash603

This top 10 games is actually included in the Videogames Hardware Handbook:

http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Gamer-Videogames-Hardware-Handbook/dp/329102334X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1406857103&sr=8-1&keywords=videogame+hardware+handbook

I bought this and it is all over the map.  Some of the systems' write-ups are relatively well-written, some of the systems' write-ups are complete shit, and then some are just perplexing.  The NES article for example talks about how the system is where "Mascots such as Mario and Kirby were born."

nosorrow

Indeed, it's pretty bad. I have the Handbook too and while nice to have, it's generally disappointing. I much prefer the retro collecting write-ups Edge did in 2003-2004 (which were later collated in a nice dedicated one-off magazine they called Retro: the PC Engine article in there is much more thorough and interesting).

This is also a terrible quote btw:
QuoteOne has to wonder just how Naxat Soft managed to do it, considering the generally average quality of its other games.
WTF Retro Gamer...

Anyways, I stopped subscribing to the magazine last year after buying every issue since 2009. I grew increasingly frustrated at its general "fluff" treatment of Japanese consoles: they were always treading the same ground and rehashing common knowledge. (Doesn't help that I couldn't care less about the computers they had in the UK nor the homebrew scene, which gets an absurd five pages or something in the mag.)
