2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

I found my way here through turbografx.net, and I'm glad I did!
Here's a quick re-cap of my Turbografx history.

I owned an original Turbografx 16 back in '89. I got it for Christmas. I remember playing non-stop for years. Gathering up games and accersories all along the way, while my friends were wasting their time on NES or Sega systems. I owned that system, with CD attatchment,PC engine game converter, a few PC engine games, a turbo tap, 6' controller extension cable, 5 controllers, and nearly every game they put out. Then, in '98 or '99, I did a foolish thing (forgive me, I was 22). Being on the constant verge of bankruptcy, I sold the whole system and games to a local game shop for $100.

About 5 years later, I coerced my wife into letting me get one for christmas. Ebay searching began. I bought the base system, and I think I paid $50 for it. Soon realizing I couldn't build my library like I used to have, I sold it. Then about another year later, I bought another one, base system again. I soon found I didn't have the money, or time to keep up with it, so I sold this one as well.

A few more years went by, and I found a better paying job, settled into my lifestyle, had a daughter, and realized I could have more than one hobby (I slipped into the car scene for quite some time, I'm still in it too). So I began scouting out on Ebay again for a system. But this time I was going to skip the puny (no offense) base system, and jump right up to the TurboDuo! I found one on ebay that had been sitting in someone's parent's attic. Complete gamble on whether it would work or not. It also was just the console. No controllers, no games, no A/C cord, no AV cord, NOTHING! It actually did come with a Turboexpress, but I sold it off to buy what I needed to get the TurboDuo running.

I finally got all the needed equipment, put in Lords of the Rising Sun, and viola! It worked! Of course, this one was too a Christmas present, so my wife made me wait until Christmas morning to try it out. I was as excited as the first time I opened it nearly 17 years before!

I owned that for about a year and a half, but lost my job, and sold it to help with money. I ended up only being unemployed for two months though.

Well in the time since, we had another child, and recently moved into a larger home. Now that things are settling in, and I have a basement where I can set up video games, I'm looking at picking up another TurboDuo.

I've been keeping my eye out for them on ebay, and they have gone up in price since I last looked, years ago.
Plus I'm learning things, like about the arcade games for the PC engine duo-R, and other things I was completely unaware of years and years ago.

Anyway, I do have one quick question. If I were to buy a Duo-R from Japan, is there a converter to play US hucards on the Japanese system?

Can't wait to get back into gaming!

(1) Do not sell any TG-16/PCE gear for the rest of your life.

(2) Get DUO-R (plays everything except NA HuCARD)

(3) Get TG-16 for NA HuCARD, or #4

(4) Get region mod for DUO-R

If you like hardware (like me), you probably want TG-16 (there is a very cheap, easy way to get composite video using rear docking port).

If you are worried about SPACE/clutter/extra pads/wires/AC adapters....get a region mod on DUO-R.

You honestly can't go wrong....except if you like NA HuCARDs  that require save feature...MOD A DUO-R (#4)

I don't plan on it. I had the same problem with cars/car parts for a long time too. I've since matured!

And thanks for the advice. Sounds like the best route for me may be to just get a turbografx AND a turbo duo R.

Oh, and your avatar and the "you die" made me laugh. I love that game!

:pcgs: No problem.

Just be sure to solve the TG-16 A/V out issue  (there's a thread here and YouTube video of a 25 cent solution)....

...and if you want to save your progress in games like Neutopia, you need TurboBoosterPlus (expensive, kinda hard to find) or the TG-CD docking bay (you don't actually need the CD-ROM drive to save progress...but price has gone up on all things TG-16).

I love using all different hardware configurations, and I never worry about RGB mods (I'm happy with composite+CRT), so I use:
TG-16+TurboBooster
TG-16+TG-CD
PCE+SCD
TurboDUO
DUO

Yes and no.  The region converters are simple pin re-routers and thus work both ways (PCE hueys on TG-16 and TG-16 hueys on PCE), but a PCE system will still require grounding of a pin on the CPU; and if you're gonna open it up anyway, ya might as well install a switch and skip the overpriced, finicky region converters.
