10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

Hey all first post here,

I've noticed on alot of other forums/youtube/wherever, people generally praise genesis, snes, and nes soundtracks, but i never see much love for pc engine tunes.

You guys all seem pretty versed in the console library, so I wanted to ask - what do you think are highlights of pc engine soundtracks? Gems and more popular stuff too.

Dicer

Devil's Crush
Which spawned...MOTHERFUCKING SWORD OF JUSTICE
Magical Chase
CD STUFF
Lords Of Thunder
Spriggan MKII Opening Theme
There is tons more but I'll let others have a crack first.

Welcome, comrade :)

We have some "Top 10" soundtrack threads...gracious folks (not me) might link to a couple...

Personally, I MUCH PREFER MOODY, SERIOUS tunes...but I cannot deny a really catchy tune, even if it is unbearably upbeat and cheerful.

You should clarify whether you are seeking:

(1) Only HuCARD/chiptune/PSG (some CD games, especially RPG's, have chiptunes)
(2) Only Red Book (CD)
(3) Both PSG/Red Book

Some really fantastic PSG tunes from humble HuCARD's include (random order):
(1) Dungeon Explorer
(2) Blodia (only a handful of songs)
(3) Legendary Axe I & II
(4) Bloody Wolf
(5) Dragon Spirit
(6) Blazing Lazers (and throw in the Soldier Series, ha!)

Anyway, there are so many more...

NOTE: there are tons of games that have lackluster soundtracks, BUT a solitary tune or two might be exquisite (the title song for China Warrior is FANTASTIC, with an often missing bit of BASS that is lacking from other chip tunes)...when you find that song, you must FEEL IT:

Hucard games:
Bomberman 94, especially Battle Theme and World1.
Gradius and Salamander, both sound so nicely old school. The audio conversion from arcade to PCE chiptunes has been done good.
Blazing Lazers is a mixed bag to me. I like some tracks better than others.

I like the intro music and title screen to bomberman 94.

Thanks for the input everyone, I have lots to listen to now while I wait for my duo to get here.  So far I think my favorite is the legendary axe soundtrack.

I was mostly looking to get a feel for the pce chip sound, but the CD stuff is welcome as well! So far it's giving me an improved nes feel. sorry if that's considered sacrilidge

Dungeon Explorer is very high up for me, and the great sequel even remixed a lot of the original's tracks with Redbook quality.

Example:

Really feeling the first tune in this vid from final blaster:

PukeSter

Dungeon explorer
Bomberman 93 and 94
Salamander
Bloody wolf

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet - Blue Blink. Amazing soundtrack.

Well, this thread is basically the best thing I've found here yet hahaha. Makes my day at work a lot more enjoyable having some awesome tunes to listen too while working. Thanks!

I'm mainly a CD / Redbook audio guy, myself.  I'd say anything made by Falcom is gold.  Lords of Thunder is a given.  How about the Shubibin man series?  I even like the HuCard music for those.  The Valis games have some good music too.
