Thinking of playing one of these. Which one is best to start, and how do they compare to both zelda 1 and link to the past?

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

Also, the poll reads "Which one is best?" and what it sounds like you're asking is which one is best to start with?  They are both worth playing and if you intend on playing them both, play them in order.  I haven't finished the second one yet, but I've really enjoyed what I've played so far and I think the general conscientious is that the second one is marginally better.

spenoza

If you are gonna play both, start with I. If you aren't interested in playing two similar titles, just play 2.

I definitely consider them more of a parallel evolution of the Zelda I model. They are more like Zelda I than L2tP. That doesn't mean they are simple, however. Character movement and interaction with the world doesn't feel quite as restricted as Zelda I, but the puzzles and dungeon designs aren't quite as clever. Also, the combat is more fast and furious. N2 is better than N1, but they are both VERY similar. N2 feels more like N1.5 in a lot of ways. Definitely more evolutionary than revolutionary.

Dicer

Play both, and cry at the end of 2...

pulstar

If you're going to play just one, play 2. If you're going to play both, start with 1. There isn't much in it, but 2 is better than 1.

Play 1 then 2.  Playing just one of them is not an option.

Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Can you say why Black Tiger? I'm curious to know.

seieienbu

I like Neutopia 2 more than the first due to the ability to walk diagonally.

Either way, I think Zelda 3 is a good deal better than both...
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

Arkhan Asylum

Playing Neutopia 2 before playing Neutopia 1 is dumb.

and, I am not sure if Neutopia is better than LTTP.

Lttp is pretty Well put together, especially with the Dark World portions and the amount of variety in the game.

and it has more depth to it.  Neutopia was clearly mimicking Zelda 1, and it destroys those.

This "max-level forum psycho" () destroyed TWO PC Engine groups in rage: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook "Because Chris 'Shadowland' Runyon!," then the other by Aaron Nanto "Because Le NightWolve!" Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together... Both times he blamed the Aarons in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

Play 1 first and then 2.  1 blows the original LoZ away to me.  Better colors, controls, variety of music, detailed bosses.... its just a great game.  Neutopia 2 is also good, but there are a lot of spoilers if you play 2 first.  I'd make sure you have a lot of time before playing 2, its a monster of a game.

ToyMachine78

I don't think I can say that neutopia is better than LoZ. Zelda was original, and the size of the world blew my mind as a kid. Its classic gold, literally. Lol

My only gripe with neutopia is I think they got a little carried away with the hidden areas. Practically every section of the map has a hidden "room" on it. You get to the point where you expect to find one, which totally takes the fun and surprise out of it.

I can't type much with my phone, so I won't ignite a flame war by daring to criticize LttP. So all I will say is that is how they rank for short and long term enjoyability. The only exception being that I haven't played Neutopia II enough times to judge it's long term enjoyability. LttP certainly burns out fast though, is light on art and the faux-NES graphic style wasn't pulled off well. Like most Zelda games I've played, what remains beneath is only neat to play through once until you forget most of it, but the tedious sections are still more frustrating than fun every time.

Neutopia was the first game to justify 16-bit console gaming for me and the boss battles are still exciting, while I find those in the other two games dull.

Agreed. The Bosses in Neutopia are boss!

literally just scored a N2 yesterday and this thread pops up.  Its a game I thought I would never be able to afford.  Really looking forward to playing it having finished the first one about 6 months ago.

I tend to agree that N1 is a step above LoZ but maybe not quite LttP.  I think N1 (1989) slots in nicely in between LoZ which came out in 1986 and LttP which came out at the end of 1991.  You can really see the maturation of the genre.

PukeSter

Finally tried Neutopia. I think it's pretty good so far. I've beat the first two crypts, and moved onto the next Sphere (at 3rd crypt).

A little strange that there are 4 over-worlds instead of 1.

PukeSter

Now on the 7th crypt. My biggest problem with the game is the constant necessity of bombs, and enemies rarely drop any.

Music is good but unmemorable, but the game is still better than Zelda 1. I don't think it's better than LTTP, but it feels somewhat less tedious.

Can you save Neutopia games on a Duo-R instead of having to write down super long passwords each time?

Haven't seen them. Just the one that gave me an extra life bar.

I'm playing on an emulator, (keyboard is better for these kind of games), but yes. You can save your game.

PukeSter

Found a monk. I went back to the Lava world to get more money, and I stumbled upon him. Extra 4 bombs!

However, the game is getting really tedious. The 8th boss is tough as nails, so I have to grind and grind for money to buy some potions.

PukeSter

Finally beat it. I had to look up how to get the last sword, but no shame.

Final boss wasn't too bad. I guess I'd give the game a C+ or B-.

that was the only thing i had to look up as well.  it really was kinda obscure.
