Hi everyone,

thought I'd say hi, signed up the other day after purchasing my first TG-16.

I've always been a NES guy since I got my first one for Christmas '89 but I fancied a change.

I was swayed by the good selection of shooters available for the system so I bought a new one from a guy over here along with a good handful of games.

Gotta say I'm loving it, so far I've been smashing Legendary Axe and Blazing Lasers every night for the last week.  In desperate need of a controller lead extension tho, went to itch my nose the other night and pulled the whole console off the shelf.

Anyway I going to have a good read through the forum to expand my knowledge base, no doubt I'll have a few questions, too, but in the mean time if any of you could point me in the direction of any trusted sellers/shops/resources that'd be awesome.

Alex. O:)

Welcome, comrade. :)

Legendary Axe & Blazing Lazers = excellent intro to TG-16...I myself had both titles when I bought the console in 1989.

Also, even though I love TG-16, I was (and always will be) sharing my heart with NES/Famicom...

So, feel free to discuss NES games...and to ask questions/share your impressions of TG-16 games (precious little discussion of folks actually playing games here).

Also, you have to tell us what part of the UK you are from. OTHERWISE I will assume you live on the Shetland Islands and burn fish scales to generate electricity.

Interesting choice as the NES was never big here in the UK, we're one the few places where the Master System was more popular.

Both my cousins had one, after playing RC Pro Am/Mario/Burai Fighter I was hooked, plus it made my Sinclair Spectrum +3 graphics look like they were made of Play-doh.

Welcome!  If you love the NES (I do too) you should immediately fall in love with the TG.  The Turbo, to me almost feels like a natural progression of the NES.  Similar controller's and the game play feels similar.  Of course, with the TG you generally don't get sprite flicker or slow down and the graphics are better.  Now get yourself a CD unit and enjoy the amazing soundtracks and botched voice acting.

Right, first noob question.  OBEY?  I'm sure it'll stand for something, initials maybe???

Not sure how easy/hard it'll be to get hold of games and accessories over here, only been into it a week.

Not afraid to import so no problem really, I ordered a TED on Tuesday so I'll probably work it like I do the NES, try out games then buy the actual copies if I like it.  That way I'm not wasting money on games I don't play or find interesting.

I'm actually going to a classic console shop tomorrow so I'll ask and see what's what.

I have noticed on the later levels of Blazing Lazers when things start getting warmed up the lack of any flicker or slow down (awesome), unlike the NES, especially Gradius or Recca.

Over the last 5 years TurboGrafx 16 games have got crazy expensive. Not a good time to get into it.

Japanese PC Engine game prices have mostly stayed the same, maybe even dropped a little.

Excellent, Excellent, You're leaning to OBEY correctly.

Also I own atm:

Tg-16 W CD and Clamshell
US DUO
DOU RX

Al, what are you running as far as OBEY? PC engine? Turbo Grafx? Or one of the many variants of DUOS? If you have a U.S Duo, you probably want to get that puppy recapped as soon as possible, Keith Courage would be the man to talk to on capping and possibly selling refurbished units.

Gotta knock off Tatsujin and Magical Chase the to-beat list some time. I used to think I had beaten all the non-CD shooters at least, but I still have a good amount to left. Coryoon looks nice and colorful, I missed that too.

These days it's extremely rare to find a bricks and mortar retro game shop here in the UK, let alone one that's heard of PC Engine or TurboGrafx.
The only one I know of is Raven Games in London and I'm not even sure if their bricks and mortar shop is still going, also their prices since back in the day have always been really high.

In the UK, you're probably screwed without spending big monies importing.  Even in the US you're often better off just getting a PCE Duo, then you won't need a Super System Card, can get by with a cheaper Arcade Card Duo (vs. the Pro), and will be able to play the few GE games that need the extra ram of a Duo.

Quote from: 8bitAl on 07/17/2015, 04:04 PM..... and can you Jerry rig a PC Engine CD to a TG?
The PCE CD slips right in to a TG interface unit, and you could cobble together a cable to go between the TG expansion port and a PCE IFU (or SuperCD add-on), but that'd be one ugly setup.

About the Euro Turbografx, keep in mind this system plays games only at 5/6 speed of the original. I guess the music will be played slower, too. Just like the majority of PAL Mega Drive and Master System releases, where a lot of developers didn't care about adjusting the game speed (50Hz PAL vs 60 Hz NTSC), screen resolution (576 lines PAL vs 480 lines NTSC, thus PAL bars) and music speed.

Well, in case of the PAL Sega consoles, it is really easy to modify them to play PAL games in 60Hz, full screen and correct music speed. Regarding the Euro Turbob, please see this thread for more information, there's a little bit of labour involved:

Talk to Chop5 to see if he has any chopsodos available to play Japanese Hucards. As mentioned before, your best bet would just get a Japanese Duo or Duo -R as that would be cheaper than getting the cd attachment with a US System 3.0 card. Again, check with Keith Courage to see if he has any refurb units for sale...

I had been looking at some adaptors from db electronics, The PC Henshin so I'll probably grab one of those along with the GrafxBooster when it's for sale to help save a bit on shipping.

I think the best course of action is to work through the Hu Cards and find the ones I want to own the physical copies of, I'm not out to own every game as I know they'll be ones I wont play so no point owning them, after that I'll look to the CD games and a Duo.

A few more games have just turned up as I type so I've got a good few to go at before I think about buying more.

So far the collection stands at 9 games, I bought these with the console:

             Blazing Lazers
             J.J. and Jeff
             Cratermaze
             Alien Crush
             Legendary Axe

These just turned up:

             Vigilante
             Galaga '90
             Ninja Spirit
             Dragon Spirit

I've just about completed Blazing Lazers, although I'm sure I read about a code you can input to change the difficulty settings???

Legendary Axe is kicking my arse a bit but it's really enjoyable.

I've not put that much time into the others but I think J.J and Jeff could be good with some perseverance, Cratermaze seems a bit easy but I get the feeling there's more to the game than I realise. Either that or it'll end up being a bit dull.

HELPFUL GUIDE:
https://www.pcengine-fx.com/main/nec_compatibility_guide.html

8bitAl: I prefer the PCE/TG-16 and all the quirky "Heath Robinson"  configurations to the DUO (the DUO is nice, certainly, but lacks all the charm and personality of the other PCE/TG-16 hardware).

The GRAY CD hardware you posted is known as SUPER CD (not to be confused with the Super CD-ROM2 (SCD) format, which was an upgrade from the original CD-ROM2 format for games).

Yes, it gets confusing.

Then just what do you have for a snack after a long game of Cricket?

That's the word I was looking for, personality.  Yes , things need a personality! I drive a n '89 Mk2 Golf Gti
for that very reason.

So let me get this right; the orange and grey CoreGrafx 2 has a super CD plumbed into the back of it?

Will said CD attachment play all CD games with the correct Hu card stuck in the front?

^ Let's do this like maths:

White PCE (original model) + SCD =
CoreGrafx I (blue logo) + SCD =
CoreGrafx II (orange logo) + SCD =
DUO

The SCD (and the DUO) has a System Card 3.0 built-in, so you can play 98% of the PCE library with PCE + SCD.

If you want to play the ARCADE CD-ROM2 titles, you'll need an Arcade System Card (two versions exist, either one will work).

One game, due to quirks, will only play with System Card 1.0: Altered Beast CD-ROM. You can play with other system cards, but the game will crash at some point (I'll allow other folks to provide the details).

Brilliant, that's cleared things up for me, next question though; what's a ballpark figure for what I should be paying?

Dollars is fine as things I buy from Japan are usually priced that way. :)
