Let's talk about North American released sports games

Let's talk about US/Canada released sports games, which ones are your favorites.

I personally have a 1./1A tie between "Hit the Ice" and "World Court Tennis" but I'm curious to hear what others everyone else likes.

I learned the rules of football to play through John Madden. It turned out to be much more enjoyable than I expected, but still more of a sim and not really a sports game as far as gameplay.

If RC racing counts, then Final Lap Twin is my favorite.

Takin' it to the Hoop is probably the most fun I've had for a pure sports gameplay Turbo game.

I must have logged the most hours with Davis Cup Tennis, in total (since the game's release). But in recent years....damn, I don't know. I don't often play sports games.

I have nostalgia for World Class Baseball, lot's of good time with my buddy in high school stealing bases.

I can get behind some Super Volleyball and World Class Tennis(let's face it, it's fucking pong) but my goto sports game on the Turbo is Power Golf. Easy to pickup, I can watch TV with the girl while playing since nothing is gonna happen if I put it down for a minute.

John Madden DUO CD Football for the win!

TV Sports Football and Basketball were the only other sports games I had for the turbob as a kid, so I have fond memories of all 3. Madden, however, was a game that restored my faith that the Duo could hang with the rival consoles in a time where the platform's future was uncertain and all the magazines were trashing on TTI and the "8-bit" turbob.

I'm not much of a sports fan so I really haven't spend much time with the other titles. There are so few, you should add a poll. And don't omit Ballistix!

About a month ago I did the pennant race in World Class Baseball. I'm a sucker for most any baseball game, so I enjoyed it. Nothing special, just decent baseball action. I would play it again (or the subsequent power leagues on pce since there are different stadiums and slight differences).

I also really enjoy Sonic Spike. It's pretty great for a $15 sports game (bought it for that sealed on Amazon not too long ago). I would play it with some friends in my dorm last year and we had a lot of fun. They usually didn't like it at first and then grew to hate it slightly less. I got pretty good at it for awhile too. 2 on 2 with a multi tap provides some great action! I would recommended it to anyone with friends over. Give it a shot, tournament play could be fun with teams of two.

I've also enjoyed Hit the Ice from what I played briefly, it was fun and not slow like I remember TV Sports Hockey feeling when I played that.

Blasphemer! How dare you disparage that which is TV Sports Hockey! I love the later Williams hockey games, Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey through NHL Hitz Pro, but the 2D games just don't translate to a fun and replayable hockey experience. I feel like the speed of TV Sports Hockey is great, with momentum building as you skate straight lines, decreasing as you turn. I've said it before here and I'll say it again, how can there be so much love for NHL94 and so much disdain for  TV Sports Hockey? Great fighting, faceoffs, animations, and in my opinion gameplay. EA's series seems to be based on this game, I would say this is NHL '91

Honestly TVSH is my favorite turbo sports game, but I really enjoy the RPG mode of World Court Tennis, so perhaps if the RPG mode from the NES release of Hit The Ice had hit the Turbo maybe I'd feel a bit different about the two games.

Bare in mind I have a very biased opinion about that game, and it's based on only multiplayer - I don't think I've played it alone. I also love hockey videogames, and if I hordtarded anything it'd be Hockey junk.

Out of what I own Hit the Ice is my favorite.  World Court looks great but I haven't acquired a copy yet.  If we are considering racing games I think Final Lap Twin is awesome do the RPG "career mode".

I can't see myself watching those FMV scenes more than once, though...even though they are competently done.

I keep thinking I will try Sonic Spike to see if it holds up in 2015, but here I am, decades later, and I still haven't tried it out.

In my defense, I don't think I bought the game until a decade ago, but still.

I don't have ONE favorite TG-16 sports game, but I certainly have had fun with:
Power Golf (I enjoy all basic golf games, so this isn't saying much)
World Class Baseball (Ditto)
David Cup Tennis

I think we could put all the damn games in a poll and see the votes. Maybe we get 2-3 votes? Or would the results be obvious (World Sports Competition, j/k)?

Maybe we should POLL the top 2-3 games, eliminate them, and then create a new poll of the "Lesser-loved TG-16 Sports Games"

For example, I am not ashamed to admit that I had fun with TV SPORTS Football when it was released. A friend and I played it often. Of course, he quickly got so good that he could decimate the computer AI (no challenge at all). I think I only played a full season a handful of times. The same with TV SPORTS Hockey: 3-5 player games were fun, but I do not remember playing a full tournament more than a handful of times.

ALSO, WE HAVE TO POST AGENT_ORANGE's AWESOME POWER GOLF (or was it Jack Nicklaus) BLANCHING!

Sonic Spike is a fun game with friends. This video shows clips of the 20 person tournament we did at Octurbofest a few years back from 1:56 to 4:14.

Turbo sports games have a lot of charm to me, in an old-school kind of way. They are usually arcade-like, with no long seasons and such, cute and clean graphics, and to the point gameplay. Of the ones I've played:

-Power Golf: Just one course, and a choice between 3 golfers. Power bar cursor moves a bit too fast, but otherwise, a really good pick up and play for 20 minutes.

-World Court Tennis: Very easy to play, although I'm still not sure why there seem to be huge differences between some players, even after reading the manual. Quest mode adds a nice distraction.

-World Class Baseball: Not a fan of these games, but this one plays really good, one of the only ones I find fun to play.

-Davis Cup Tennis: Just played 10 minutes and didn't get the controls, but many people think it is good, so it should be.

-Tv Sports Football: I'm an European, so outside of Tecmo Super Bowl I find football games hard to play.

Well, majors did stop playing Nam momentarily when it was his turn to participate in the Sonic Spike tournament.

But yeah, major props to joshuaTurbo for capturing the essence of the fest via the recording. Of all the different fests that we have done over the years, that event was probably my favorite.

Missed this thread while it was hot.  I looove power golf.  All I have is a loosie now, but I have always dug that soundtrack.  I have always meant to keep an eye out on Power Golf 2, so I might shop for it after I finish typing this.  Madden Duo Football always fascinated me, I'm not a football fan (save perhaps for Eyeshield 21 on the Nintendo DS) but it was awesome to see a major franchise make it's way on to the Duo.  I would definitely pick it up for the novelty, but I'm sure there would be a lot of competition with it being one of those late release TTI titles.

It would only work using certain pitchers I think it was only left handed ones. Has anyone else figured out something similar?

Here is how I wrote it down.

Move pitcher from center of plate to the far right edge of the plate. Pitch the ball & then curve it to the left of the screen so it just crosses the plate. If you do this properly you should be able to strike out the batters almost every time.

That's cool, Ivan, and I'm sure more thought than has been ever applied to a Turbo sports game.  Excited to try this out when I get some time.

I fired up Power Golf with the lady yesterday, and to my surprise I'm downright horrid at that game.  The power meter arrow comes back way too fast for me - I find it really difficult to get the timing right.  The first hole I hit it consecutively into the woods 6 times.  Good thing we were only playing match play, otherwise I'd be nursing a double digit score from the first hole onward!  Other than that the game is pretty enjoyable, although I've certainly played better.  I've played worse too, and on this very system - Jack Nicklaus Turbo Golf is just an ugly, DOS-feeling game.  Tough to believe it somehow got a second release on the system on CD.

With all sports games of this sort, my friends and I tried the "extremes" to test the limits. I'm sure I tried your move, but I don't know if I ever realized it was "foolproof"...

Random thoughts:

Messing around with the inside corner too much can get you in trouble (hitting the batter)—the computer doesn't "try" to get hit, but when playing friends/brothers, we would purposefully hop back and forth (crowding the plate) like spastic fools.

I never figured out if it made a difference to hop around  + swing vs. stationary + swing. I was always worried that hopping spastically would be penalized (i.e. something that would have been a base hit become foul ball or pop up), but I don't know if that was ever born out by actual play.

World Class Baseball is awesome.  Another cheap way to win is to let the huge lead-off guys start running to second and just throw them out right before they get there.

Hit the Ice is pretty cool. I love it. I also have to throw a vote in ffor TV Sports Football. I know it's not the greatest Football game of all time, but we played so much of it when I was a kid that we actually got to where we were good at it and enjoyed it. I remember the first time we saw ads for the game and there was the football player up close with the "Hi Mom!" on the screen! My cousins and I were like WOAH! That Looks so REAL!!!! LOL. Just great memories there. Still, Hit the Ice was awesome and I LOVE Hockey a lot more than Football, so yeah.

On a side note, has anyone played much of Power Golf 2 (Japan release)? It looks pretty good, from what I've seen so far.
