Wii and virtual console

I've bought a Wii and was just wondering what people here made of both it and the virtual console?

The only Wii games that I have are Wii Sports and Wii Play (to get the second controller). On the virtual console I've bought two PC Engine games, one Mega Drive game and two N64 games:

PCE
Dragon's Curse
Bomberman '93

N64
Mario Kart 64
Zelda: Ocarina of Time

MD
Sonic the Hedgehog

So far I think the Wii is pretty good. My girlfriend loves Wii Sports. The only other video game she's ever really bothered with is Bomberman on my PCE (and Boom, the Bomberman clone on the Mac). Oh yes, and Sonic the Hedgehog which she had on her Master System—that's why I bought the Mega Drive version on the VC.

Here's the thing, though. Will it have longevity or have I just slapped down €300 on a silly toy?

When it comes to the Virtual Console, it's pretty good fun but I'd still rather have the PCE originals. Sadly I suspect that they won't be offering CD games, which is a real pity because I've yet to get a CD unit for my PCE. I suspect I'll mainly buy SNES games on the console—The Legend of the Mystical Ninja will likely be next—but I might also get US translations of games that I can't play on my PCE due to language issues (Neutopia, if it ever appears, for example).

I am also not sure yet whether the VC is really a step forward or I'm just getting misty-eyed and nostalgic.

Any thoughts?

Hey man, this would probably be better recieved in the Virtual Console forum, but my opinion on the VC is that it's a cool add-on, but if you have a decent PC it shouldn't be a selling point.

And I don't give a fuck if someone had already said something about this in an earlier post, because fucking Norton makes my computer so fucking slow that my computer can't even run Firefox updater and burn a DVD at the same time. And now the burn just fucking FAILED. >_____<

I'm pissed, I'm going to go watch Slayers: TMP. L8rz.

Ummm..... it's a video game console, so of course it's a silly toy. Don't expect it to be supported for any longer than the Gamecube was (is). I expect that the Wii will have a fairly short life span due to its lackluster hardware, but I'll be surprised if the next gen replacement is not backwards compatible.

Stupidly I didn't realise there was a VC forum... Any chance a moderator can move this thread there?

I suppose what I'm getting at re the Wii is, is it a sillier toy? I mean, will it have less of a life than a typical console. I don't even mean supported life, I mean will most owners—myself included—tire of it?

I was—am—looking forward to the independent games to be downloaded but who knows if that will really happen...

Those are some nice VC games you got there.

I'm not into the VC myself since I collect games anyways and I use emulation on my PC for free. I would happily pay money for translated ROMs though.

As far as the Wii's longetitivity is concerned, I think it's going to do just fine and last as long as any console would. The Wii's success has been great so far and the big games haven't even hit yet, so if it can keep up the success until the holiday season, it's going to be phenomenal.

By the way, I still don't get why they charge so much for a Wii in Europe. Isn't it like the same price as the other systems out there?

God, no. The PS3 is something like €700.

€300 was a rough figure anyway. My local electronics store had the Wii for €299.99. Right next door the games shop had it for €279.99. I bought it in a department store down the road for €249.99 plus €30 for "any other game" (I bought Wii Play to get the controller). I also bought two fake Gamecube controllers for €7.99 each. They're OK – a bit plasticy and one of the buttons feels like it might get a bit flaky but the price was right

As for why things are more expensive, well, this is Europe—everything's expensive. It doesn't help that I live in the most expensive city in Europe other than, as far as I'm aware, Moscow. People blame tax and all sorts of crap for the higher prices but the reality is the companies just see a chance to get their arms in. And so they do.

How much is a Wii in the US, then?

The VC suits me better than emulation. My girlfriend is more likely to play on the VC than on my Mac. The TV is a big advantage. Also, I've noticed a lot of roms have disappeared from the download sites. Very annoying.

To be honest, I also wanted to gently encourage them to release more PCE games, hence Dragon's Curse. I really want lots of RPGs, which would mean translation I suppose, though I have a Dungeon Explorer HuCard and can play it, more or less. I used to play Actrasier in Japanese on the Super Famicom when I was a kid but I don't think I'd have the patience these days.

Yeah I don't like playing on a monitor as much either, I prefer the real deal whenever possible

. Most video cards these days do support video out so you can hook your PC up to your TV and play that way which is nice. I like to play MAME on my TV using an arcade stick.

By the way, I think this is the most appropriate forum to post this thread in as it's not just about the VC, but the Wii in general and our VC forum is for TG16 games on the VC.

Why do you have Norton? It's much worse than ANY computer virus out there! You have no IDEA how many calls I got from people having problems with Norton ****ing up their computers back when I was working with tech support. I've had it myself too (Norton Internet Security 2005). That was a traumatic experience to be sure. I also assembled a computer for a friend a couple of years back, which was a LOT faster than his previous one. We installed Norton on it right away. Then he said: hey, this computer's actually as slow as my old one. What a rip off.

Make sure you completely reformat your computer before getting the new software. Norton is a virus, and you can never really get rid of it completely. Not even with the "Norton Removal Tool" program (which you can find by digging through Symantec's website).

While a reformat would be a sure way to make sure there is no residue leftover from Norton, you could instead unistall it, delete it's entries in the registry, and the folders it created on the hard drive. That would remove a lot of Norton's mess. A Defrag after that would be nice, prior to installing whatever other Antivirus/firewall program you have.

I've installed Norton Internet Security on other folk's computers, never had any issues with it. Though I definitely do no reccomend it for bargain processors, such as Celeron. Thena gain, I don't reccomend those type of processors at all.

One just has to know how to work with Norton. It's a decent program, however if you don't have all the resources it wants, then it's more the fault of not feeding the program what it needs.

It is a bit more bloated than it needs to be, I have similar feelings about Nero Burning software. Decent stuff, however the new version has a whole lot of stuff, and for what I need it for the program only has to be simple. Nero 7 is a decent program, just more bloated than I care for at the moment. So, I use Padus Disk Juggler, whose new version works just fine with Vista (32 and 64 bit).

Uninstalling it (and doing what you mentioned) is unfortunately not enough at all. That's why Symantec developed the Norton Removal Tool - it's a real uninstaller (and the real virus protection program - it protects you from Norton - the biggest computer virus ever produced). The fact that it takes forever to uninstall Norton kinda proves how much it messes with your system. Well, many computer viruses are meant to screw things up, and Norton sure is one of them.

Nero 7 is a similiar virus, so I've never used it (only tested it on a crap setup). I'm still using version 6.6.X.X.X.X (why do they release so many updates for this?), and even by then they included some spyware with it.

How is Norton a virus?

The only thing I know, virus like, that they do is they keep track of what each unique key does (How many times it's installed, uninstalled, hardware profiles on each machine, etc).

However, other programs do the same, such as Windows.

**edited to add:

Nearly all programs leave crap behind when they are uninstalled. Not only Norton.

The most problems I hear from folks with computers has to do with drivers. Never one particular big thing causing the issue, always something different can cause a computer's drivers to get out of sorts. That can be time consuming for me to straighten out. Antivirus programs, so far, haven't been too problematic for me.

ahhh, well, that's not a virus there, that's what I call a, "resource hog".

NIS likes to eat resources, however, it does have some benefit to all it devours. Also, if you have enough resources to go around, you probably won't even notice NIS is there, except during boot.

Though, like OS', photo programs, e-mail programs, etc, everyone has their own preference.

Who needs a MAC virus when upgrading the OS is worse than every PC virus put together?

It came with my computer. Unless they downloaded gay hentai at the factory, I should be OK.
