2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Ok, here's the deal.  Instead of the usual raffle, I'm going to give you the chance to earn the following:

IMG

IMG

Prerequisites for entering: 100 posts.

This is a two part challenge.  For the first part, I've made a playlist of audio clips from PCE and TG-16 games.  You will need to identify which games these clips are from.  Some will be easier than others, I did that on purpose.  Hopefully it's not too easy though!

For the second part, you will need to take the first letter from each of those titles and write them down somewhere.  Now, unscramble these letters to form an obey related phrase.  There shouldn't be any confusion about the titles I've chosen, but bear in mind the US title always takes precedence over the Japanese one.  Example:  If what you hear is Bonk's Adventure, then you will write down a "B."  It won't be "P" for PC Genjin.  So if it came out in the US, use that name.

First person to PM me the correct phrase wins the Power Golf 2 pictured above!  DO NOT POST ANSWERS IN THE THREAD.  Just PM me when you have it.  If you want to play along but don't want the game, just PM and tell me so along with your guess and I'll give you credit for finding it first. (Next in line with the correct guess will get the game).  After we have a winner I'll reveal what the games and phrase were. (Can we spoiler tag here?  If so I'll do that with the answers)

To make this fair, I'm going to wait until Saturday, Feb. 13th at 1:00 PM (Eastern USA Time) to post the clips.  That way everybody has had some warning and you can all start at the same time, plus it will give me a chance to clarify any rules in the meantime.

Good luck peeps!

Congrats to Black Tiger for cracking the code first!!! =D>

Congrats to sunteam_paul for winning the Power Golf 2! =D>

Answers here!

Click here to see the decoded message received from the Hunting Dog!

P.S., if you are entering from another country, shipping is on you! 8)  I'll ship to anyone in the USA for free.

Ok!  Here is the link to the sound clips:

Good luck!  Later in the day I will check back and provide hints if needed.  P.S. There are 14 tracks.  Soundcloud will continue playing something else when track 14 ends, it's unrelated to the contest.

Normally I'd be more exacting but I gotta run out the door for my date.  I will check on your progress  later on!  I hope it doesn't bother anyone's sense of fairness, sorry about that.  So you get a 10 minute head start if you happen to be here now.

Hints for all tracks:  9 of the 14 games had domestic (US) releases, 5 are PCE only.
Hints for track #1:  Fellow PCEFX'er Bernie might have something to do with this one.  All aboard the Turbob Xpress!  Choo Choo!
Hints for track #2:  Is one of the orange label games.  Features some of the biggest TV stars on the Turbografx-16.  Sorta.  Also known for having censored content.
Hints for track #3:  Often compared to a certain Nintendo title.  The title is four syllables long.  Also has a sequel on the TG-16.
Hints for track #4:  This tune really poisons your heart.  The "designers" who "worked" on this did a really nice job.
Hints for track #5:  This one tried to top the Turbografx-16 charts but found it impossible to do so.  The main character of this series was born in Sheffield, UK.  He didn't get his start on the TG-16.
Hints for track #6:  This game is well known for a having a particular style of music.  The clip used is not an example of this style, however.  Has it's very own VHS tape!
Hints for track #7:  This game took some inspiration from a famous series of movies.  These movies were known in part for showcasing a notable piece of sports equipment.  From a sport well loved in Canada.
Hints for track #8:  Try not to be too sting-y when looking to buy your own copy of this title.  It might the last one available.  You might even wanna set up some E-bay alerts.
Hints for track #9:  Is a port of an arcade game.  The chimps from Project X (1987) would be right at home in this one.  (look up the synopsis if you haven't seen it!).  Do battle on a holodeck!
Hints for track #10:  Power up with Pac-man in this console exclusive (in the 90's) arcade port.  The title starts with a vowel!
Hints for track #11:  Kilroy was here.  This one is a sequel.
Hints for track #12:  #12's protagonists are of a race featured prominently in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.  And very prominently featured in "The Hobbit." (btw: not Hobbits.)  The title is an example of Japanese onomatopoeia.  One of Bubble Bobble's many cousins.
Hints for track #13:  Features a store with the same moniker as the band who would become New Order.  Contains many references to popular movies of the 1980's.  The man who wrote and directed this game still works in the game industry today.  By a company who can found somewhere in this forum post.
Hints for track #14:  Build up your body and and eat all you can in this one!  Then - surround your enemies to destroy them.

Hints for the secret phrase:  The phrase is three words long.  Part of the phrase comes from one of the TurboDuo pack-in games.  It contains a name.  The name belongs to a certain villain.

Dicer

Sounds fun, I'm down to try and earn some overly complicated yet deeply involving Japanese golf...

Good luck to all that decide to take this on.

Great idea!

We should have folks create more of these "audio challenges", just for fun :)

I am going to challenge myself, but not to win the prize (I already own PowahGulf2).

I actually love-hate these sorts of challenges, because I often recognize something but attribute it to the wrong game. Ha!

I welcome the opportunity to be frustrated. :)

Yeah, I love these kind of music games too.  Maybe someone else can do one after this one, sorta like we do with the screenshot quiz.

Ah, it's the weekend, people are doing things with their families. :)  I hope it will pick up during the week though, I was planning this for a little while.  I thought I saw some interest in Power Golf 2 on the forum a while back so I'm sure there will be at least a few takers.

incrediblehark

Nice idea for a contest! I will give it a shot, cant remember if I have this game already but the challenge sounds like fun.

Nazi NecroPhile

Neato!  Like este, I don't want the game but I'm gonna see if I can figure it out for le fun.

Glad to have anybody who doesn't want the prize to play along, bragging rights will be awarded and I'll post your name on the OP!  I hope there is some more interest in the game though, I bought two copies! (I mean, one is for me of course.)

Don't worry.

A long time ago, on another forum, a similar challenge was posted.

I can't tell you how frustrating it was when I couldn't figure out many games!

I had taken an oath not to cheat (you could play games on real hardware, but no emulation/soundtracks/etc.)

This was before YouTube, so that wasn't even an option.

We'll just have to see if I made it too easy or too hard (hopefully a little in between.) I am probably doing early Valentine's date stuff today (So I'll be away from the computer for most of today), but I plan to provide hints, and the contest will go on until someone gets it.  Like the screenshot thread, we all struggle, then the screenshot provider expands the image and someone goes "ohhh..."  So if I see that people are struggling on a certain one, I will drop a hint about it.  I don't think I'm going to record a new longer version though.

johnnykonami

I posted the link to the tracks in the OP, have at it guys!

_Paul

Considering I spend a lot of time recording off PC Engine soundtracks, I'm finding this surprisingly difficult.

CrackTiger

That's a funny assortment. :) I believe that I recognize them all, but recently bought Power Golf 2 new.

Anyone who listens to sound roms should get all of the chip tunes.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

You'd think so. What's annoying is the ones that you just know really well but can't quite put a name to them.

There was one or two that I know are from one or two possible games. Listening to sound roms for so long, I have a feeling for where sounds fall alphabetically and also by genre. Some of the sports games with RPG sounding music are memorable because of that.

But it also depends on the day. When I'm tired, I have a hard time placing very familiar tracks, which kills me when a sing is stuck in my head. :P

Yesh, there's one in the list that I know I played recently, I know what type of game it is but there's some mental blockage stopping me remembering it. Probably just old age.

johnnykonami

If I can get a concensus on a track you guys are finding difficult, I can give a clue for it. Which do you want one for?  I also added a general and not terribly helpful hint to the OP.  Gotta start small!

It's probably much harder if you've been listening to a lot of game music recently!  I listen to a lot of game music myself and I think I would struggle on someone else's challenge.  I just added another clue to the OP.  I'll keep an eye on activity tonight, if there is some more I'll give another clue or two, if not I'll add some tomorrow.

#13 is pretty sneaky and will probably be the hardest one for people to figure out. :)

Haha, thanks, I thought so.  That game has tons of way more memorable tracks than the one I provided, I did that with a couple of them.  I mean, if I give you the first level track on ALL of them it would be way too easy.  I'm impressed if you got it already though!

For me, I think #9 is hardest.  I would be totally lost on that one.  Let me know if you agree!

That was the easiest for me for a game that I don't have any nostalgia for, nor a lot of experience with.

I've only done a quick listen on my phone so far, haven't confirmed all of them yet.

Good job on picking many signature sounds by different publishers. That's the biggest spoiler/hint of all. :P

Yeah, I guess it really comes down to what you're already familiar with, it's gonna be a little different for everyone.  For me, that's one of my least played games on the list. (Not because it's a bad game, mind you).  For someone else, that might be their favorite game and they will know it immediately.  I knew that clues would be a big part of this from the start.

And thanks!  Like you and others playing along, I'm just a fan of all kinds of game music.  I have a pretty sizeable collection of soundtrack CDs going back to the 90's and and even bigger collection of stuff on my HDD.  From Frank Klepacki to Hitoshi Sakimoto to Ben Daglish to Yuzo Koshiro, I'm a fan.  I don't think your clue is gonna be super helpful, but it might help someone out there!  Variety is nice, and if the stuff is too samey, it's just gonna all bleed together.

CrackTiger and I are in a battle!

I had a quick listen on my phone before, too,  and jotted down my guesses.

Unfortunately, I have self-imposed a "no cheat" rule so I am basing everything from memory...

....but I wonder if my compulsive tendencies will make me cheat. Because there are some tracks that are going to drive me CRAZY.

I am going to listen again....

Johnny_Konami is my witness!

I totally put down "CD RPG?"

I am watching a movie with my wife, and this entire time I am thinking about one track (not #11) that I ABSOLUTELY KNOW (it is so familiar), but I can't figure it out (I already determined that my first two guesses were wrong this morning)!

I haven't had time to really listen to each track and investigate, but there's a few that I likely wouldn't place correctly, but I know all them and know what comes next and sometimes before each clip.

Here's a mini hint:  I personally think #1, #2, #14 are easiest.

I'll figure out which are the trickiest to pin down later. #6 is the easiest, followed by #2. #14 would be tough if that track didn't have its own thread here and been discussed so much in the past.

#13 has got to be the toughest if you don't identify it just by hearing it. You won't find it by skipping tracks on CD games and listening to the first bit of music.

#1 is the track I expect to have to track down, as it's too familiar and too many games have similar ambient background sounds.

I agree with #2 being easy if you've played it (and you all should have!).  I didn't participate in any threads about #14 to my recollection but it is a popular game all the same and I knew a ton of people would easily get it.  I agree with #13 being tough.  It's one of my favorite games (I have multiple CD soundtracks and remix albums of it) but I will drop a bigger clue later on.  I think had someone picked this track for me, I would recognize it immediately but not be able to place it, at least right away.

You might wanna tell Esteban #6 is easy!  I think I pulled a dick move on that one too.  I will explain later on either by using it as a hint or after this is all over.
