Pcengine duo sales question

Hi everyone,

I am new here, and ended up here reading an old turbo grafix / pcengine buying guide.

I am essentially looking for pricing on refurbished PC engine duo systems (ones fixed up and had already had the parts that typically go bad replaced) as well as having the s-video /rgb mod done.

Excuse me for being uninformed, it's why I am here. I collected a few PC engine CD games that I would love to play, and the high prices compared to a lack of understanding has always kept me from diving in.

If refurbished do you know what model or models you are considering?

Steep price for something that is likely to break down :/.

I will do some more research, but I am primarily looking for a unit that can play all hu cards and CD games (outside of the arcade ones, since I know you need the memory card for it).

I currently own the dragon ball z PC engine CD game, as well as the galaxy fraulien yuna games that I would like to play.

I will definitely send Keith a PM and see what he says.

Is there anything I should know regarding hu cards?

They are more reliable in my opinion that a 1st gen sega CD if that helps. My DUO has had its fair share of issues, but they overall are fairly bullet proof. Esp. once you replace the caps in them.


I would suggest getting a recapped unit, with a region mod, and maybe S video/RGB/Component.

The price is steep, but these are really obscure systems, haha. (Still cheaper than a TG16 CD unit though) Although, I think the briefcase units might be cheaper than a normal Duo.. (Can't recall)

They're not all that likely to break down.  Original Duos will need caps if not already done, but beyond that they're pretty solid, as are the Duo-R/RXs; the second most common thing to need is a laser replacement or tuning, especially if you want to play CDRs.

Get a refurbished unit and you should be good for many years to come.

So I have decided to go the briefcase route because that just looks awesome.

Keith got back to me and priced me out, now I am just deciding between what output mod to do.

Originally, I was going to go the s-video route, but now I am thinking rgb or component would be the way to go.

Is rgb signicantly better than s-video?

The real question is do you have something so epic that the RGB does not have to be converted. If you have a like PVM or some awesome monitor, go RGB/scart. If not, go component. Just my 2 cents.

RGB and component in my opinion is really only necessary if you want to play your system on a newer HD flat screen TV of sorts by using a converter or if you own a monitor that accepts RGB like 780racer mentioned. Otherwise, for a CRT television S-video is the best bang for the buck.

I plan on playing this on one of my HDTVs.

I planned on either connecting this via s video through my elgato HD to my TV, or connecting it to my old onkyo receiver which can upscale SD, but I am not sure on the potential input lag due to how it upscales.
