Was just idly browsing today, and my wanderings led me to search ebay for x68k stuff.
There seemed to be plentiful software availiable (compared to the FM towns), but no systems.
How much do those go for? To those of you who own one, was it worth the purchase?

PCEngineHell

if you get a fully working great condition one with  a good audio card and 2megs of ram at least you will be set. Make sure the PSU is good, and the disk drives have been serviced. yahoo Japan aucts. tend to have them cheap.

GUTS

I don't know if they're too good for people who can't read Japanese, I was thinking of getting one a while back but Emerald Rocker said it was kinda tough to navigate, and that 90% of the games are either arcade ports or porn games/dating sims anyway so I might as well just play mame instead.  Plus good luck getting one for less than like $400-$500 shipped, even on Yahoo japan like Michael suggested I couldn't find a decent deal when I was looking.  Plus the games are all fucking EXPENSIVE, especially any shooters.

Keranu

I don't think I will ever come close to getting one. As GUTS said, most of the games are just arcade ports. Granted they're very accurate arcade ports, but I'd rather just play them on MAME if I wanted accuracy of the original. For that money I'd just build a way superior computer.

not to forget, that the x68k only used 5"1/4 flexdiscs which will be outdated soon or later.

You can get one on Yahoo Japan for about $100, and shipping will be the same. It's not that hard to work with, even without Japanese knowledge. The games are awesome and the music is better on the X68000 than ANY other system in the universe.

Totally get one. Today.

Yea getting most games to boot is pretty easy and you need no real understanding of Japanese to get them going from my experience on emulation, which requires you to get the games going the same way.

Seldane

It's more complicated when you have a hard drive (what with the installations and stuff), but once you get the hang of it - it ROCKS! :)

Almost as good as Amiga, except Amiga uses samples exclusively, not the "some samples but mostly FM" of the X68000.

The X68000 has a far better selection of quality titles then the Amiga. The arcade ports were spot on,Ys1-2 were awesome,About every Konami and Capcom title on it is a keeper, ect. I don't know about you,but playing Akumajo Dracula,Gradius 3,Chase HQ,Afterburner,Dead in the Brain,Ys1-2,Final Fight, ect are alot more fun then playing Defender of the Crown,Wings, and a bunch of poor arcade ports that only have music,or sound fx. Not saying the Amiga is not fun or didn't have any good games, because it was fun,and had alot of nice original titles if you span the entire library. I just feel its selection pales compared to the X68000s.

The Amiga is a great game machine, and some of the games do have a slightly more "boring" European flair to them. There's no denying that really X68000 had better, more Japanese games on the system. But if you know me, you know that games aren't the reason I love the Amiga. I love the scene it inspired, I love the creative things you can do with it, hell if I actually HAD an Amiga I'd be too busy with OctaMED Pro to even CONSIDER playing games!

Plus, the Amiga had Apidya, which is almost as Japanese as the real thing.

Actually, Ys 2 was never released for the X68000. Dempa Micomsoft released a remake of Ys 1, which I consider the best version of that game (excluding Ys 1 Complete). Falcom themselves made the best version of Ys 3 and released it for the X68000. No other version can even compare to this one. There are unofficial emulated ports of Ys 1-2 (PC-8801 versions) on the X68000, but again- these are unofficial and were only available through piracy BBSes.

Not trying to dispute your claim on Y's 2 or anything, but I got my diskette images from a friend,2 disk game, and I have scans of the packaging on a cd-r around here somewhere with other scans of x68000 games packaging....if it was a bootleg I am surprised. Dempa was supposed to have released it in 91. It looked real in the scans and feels legit to me when playing it.

That's Ys 1 silly. Dempa's own remake, which is not a bootleg. :P

To clarify...

Ys 1 was released by Dempa in 1991. This is an official remake of Ys 1.
Ys 3 was released by Falcom in 1990. This is an official release.

Ys 1 (a port of the PC-8801 version) was unofficially and illegally released by some doods known as Team Milkhouse. They did the same thing with Ys 2.

Ahh Ok,I never bothered to play it much. He had the images in a file folder listed as y's2. When I loaded it up I only looked at it for a sec,I assumed he was correct because the graphics had a rework that looked alot like the Falcom Classics Y's2 collection for Saturn, which I had way back in 2000,so I assumed it was the same game. So I am guessing then the Saturn version was a total rework on its own too then? I play very little of Y's,I thought the series looked nice from afar, but I don't like bum rushing enemies. The only one I played the most was Y's 1 for Master System. When I had 1/2 for Turbo Cd,I played it for like 3 mins, that was it. I did beat Ys 3 for Genesis though, way before I ever even knew what systems Ys 1,2,ect.. were released on in any format.

Seldane

I bet your Ys disk images were named Ys II because they were downloaded from this site, which has mislabeled them: http://www.jcec.co.uk/X68list.htm

Yeah, Falcom Classics contains a Saturn remake of Ys 1 whereas Falcom Classics 2 contains an Ys 2 remake. They are pretty nice, but I still find them rather disappointing as they are almost 100% faithful to the original games, except with updated graphics and sound. I wish they would've taken advantage of the Saturn hardware more, making bigger enemies and bosses and adding more interesting features/effects, etc. like in the Ys Eternal PC remakes.

From a collector's point of view it's certainly collection worthy.

As for gaming... It's known for it near arcade perfect ports right??

But the loading thing Will likely get on your nerves (if you can't get them to load from a harddrive that is).
And if mame doesn't set you on fire i  think your better of getting a supergun or arcade cabinet instead.

Does it have other good games besides arcade ports or games that weren't released on other consoles???

If yes, it could still be a gamers machine.
don't be human... be peacefull

GUTS

Well it does have Geograph Seal which is a great Starfoxish style shooter by the guys who went on to make Jumping Flash.  That game is seriously sweet.  I know there are a few more here and there, but I think I only found like 4 or 5 good games that weren't arcade ports or available on other systems.  I had a complete rom set for a while there and it was fun trying them all out, but JEEZ that system had a shitload of dating sims/porn games.  The only game I really went back and played again and again was Geograph Seal

There is no such thing as a gamer machine that does not excel at the above. The x68000 excelled at what was at the time the popular titles. It had a nice few RPGs for it too, games like Dead in the Brain and Emerald Dragon ect..along with titles like Bomberman. The only people who seem to complain about the X68000 selection of games are people who don't own one.

Kitsunexus

Michael, all those games you listed you can get on other systems ie; Emerald Dragon is a Super Famicom game, DOTB is a Turbo CD, Bomberman is TG-16 etc....

Dead in the Brain on it was better then the Duo port. Same goes for Emerald Dragon, however I do like the Duos audio.
All the Wolf Team games on X68000 are far better then their weaker Genesis versions, and the same goes for most of what was released on it and other systems back then.
I think on alot of those "ports" actually the home system versions are the ports of the X68000 versions.

Seldane

Yeah that's true. Most of the "ports" you speak of originated on the X68000 (along with the PC-9800 in many cases) and are much better than on any other system. I don't think many (if any) one of these "ports" are better on any home console.
