12/23/2024: Localization News - Team Innocent

PC-FX Localization for Team Innocent is released, a pre-Christmas gift!! In a twist, it feels like the NEC PC-FX got more attention in 2024 than any other time I can remember! Caveat: The localizers consider the "v0.9" patch a BETA as it still faces technical hurdles to eventually subtitle the FMV scenes, but they consider it very much playable.

OK I've never played Super Bonk before today and well...yeah

Kinda wishin I hadn't, outside of it being a decent looking SNES title there is NO direction what so ever, the level design is atrocious...and they kept the fucking TUBES.

Fuck, am I being harsh or does it get any better?

LostFlunky

Not a great game - some fun music and sounds.  Some neat grafx on the space level... Not as good as the Turbo trio...

bob

the only non-turbo bonk i have ever played is the OG Gameboy, for which i didnt hate.
now i want to break it out during this snow shit i am currently burried under.

never played super bonk.   sorry.

DragonmasterDan

It's a lot like Bonk 3 which is my least favorite of the turbografx Bonk games. Super Bonk 2 is a much much better game, it's too bad it didn't get released in the US.

When bonk3 was coming out I was 10, and asked my parents for it because I loved the first two so much, and they ended up getting me super bonk. I lined over bonk 3 in magazines, but never did get a copy. I played the shit out of Super Bonk but the form changes sucked, level design was so different, and I generally did not like it as much as I did the first two. Perhaps it lacks the same charm.

I recently picked up the Japan only exclusive sequel Super Bonk 2, and it was even stranger. I might spend some more time with it soon, but think I'd rather give the third Turbob version a playthrough first.

ParanoiaDragon

Super Bonk could be a great game, it, more then Bonk 3, requires some rebuilding.  Majority of the music isn't very Bonkish, nor the sounds.  I think one thing that would help is if he could spin faster.  I have written down various ideas on how to make the game better, including the look of the graphics if done on the Turbo, which would be a neat project I'd absolutely love to do some day.  Espcially the music, since that's my forte.

So a "Super Duper Bonk"

It's okay, but you're better off playing Super Bonk 2 or any of the three Turbobs.

Was gonna say the same thing. I was really impressed with Super Bonk 2. It's like they mixed Super Mario World with Bonk. But the first two Turbo games are definitely the best, IMO.

Super Bonk *looks* nice.

But it is missing the heart and soul of Bonk.

Yes, one might say it's missing the meat.

Abuelita enters stage left. Conjuring every ounce of energy, she says, as loudly as she is capable: "Donde esta la carne?" Exeunt.

Yes, one might say that. :)

In fact, even vegetarians would say that.

Super Bonk teases us, at the very least, with the promise of crispy skin--and lots of it!

...but, sadly, Super Bonk can't even provide enough of that. We get a few scraps. Nothing more.

That sad, I'll take a tweaked Super Bonk over the 3D Brink of Extinction in a heartbeat.

TANGENT: I love Bonk-as-crab... does anyone know what SFC games include Bonk-as-crab? I was recently playing Bonk 3 w/ my twins and I just friggin' loved their reaction to Bonk getting pummeled by huge stone blocks.

:)

Super Bonk is so far the strangest Super Nintendo game i've ever played

PukeSter

Super Bonk has an outstanding soundtrack and the "humor" is on point. The candy system is also improved.

The snes hardware and larger cart size definitely improved the graphics, though I guess it's not as vibrant color-wise.

There were some good ideas with the branching levels. Sadly, the level design falls apart after the first world.

The re-use of Turbografx sprites looks jarring. Slowdown can also get kinda annoying and the bosses are a bit tedious.

As NecroPhile said, Super Bonk 2 is a much better game. Really feels like a proper sequel to Bonk's Revenge.

Conclusion: Super bonk is basically a solid Bonk 3.5, but doesn't hold up to 1, 2 or Super 2.

Dicer

Gonna try Super 2 soon, will impress after my attempt...

Esty, in Super Bonk 2 you can turn into a worm, but it's pretty useless. You can fart gas though.

If you get squished sideways in a certain level you turn into a penguin. Makes you skinnier.

Getting under cracks involves a running slide, or the red candy (on two or so levels)

Dicer

OK Super Bonk 2 is pretty awesome...we need a port.

ParanoiaDragon

Super Bonk uses the crab, though IIRC, you mainly see it for the shmup bonus level.  There is at least one level late in the game where I think you do have to use the crab a lot.

Ok, I'll have to investigate this. Thanks for steering me in the right direction. :)

Awesome! I haven't played this game in....15 years? I thought I had played it more recently, but I definitely was conflating it with Super Bonk.

IN FACT, I suspect that I have unfairly held a "meh" view of Super Bonk 2 because I had confused the two SFC games.

The only thing I can really complain about in Super Bonk 2, is the checkpoint system.  All other Bonk games have Bonk respawn.  It makes it more difficult, for better or worse.  Bonk 3 was waaaaaaaaaaay too easy, so challenge is welcome.  Still, I found the final boss of Super Bonk 2 frusterating because of not respawning.  That's one thing I'd change if we brought it to the Turbob.

I like the checkpoint system. It's a nice change of pace and the game is still pretty easy overall.
Bonk 1's final boss I feel is much, much harder and that's with respawning.

I'd say Super bonk 2 is more challenging, solely because of the pits, and it's harder to get heart pieces. But don't forget, it's the only Bonk with a password system.

Honestly, my only real complaint with Super bonk 2 is the repetitive Castle levels. But in the end, it really feels like a proper Bonk 3.
