Japanese Vasteel vs. US Vasteel?

I'd love to pick up Vasteel, but don't feel like paying the ridiculous prices for it on eBay.
Can anyone tell me if the Japanese version makes the game play more difficult if I don't know Japanese? Or is the storyline removed enough that it is still fun to play?

Oh, I've played it before, 100 years ago when I owned a lot of games. I liked it then. I'm just not keen on paying the crack pipe prices that it is listed for now. That's why I was wondering about the Japanese version.

I can't really say for sure since I haven't played it, but since it's a Working Designs release, there might be instances where the company changed stats/things around in the game. It might be worth checking in on that one guy who is hacking WD releases to remove their stat-change fuckery to see if there are any major gameplay differences between Vasteel's JPN and USA releases.

If anything, my money is on the Japanese release being better balanced, being the original and all. No guarantees though.

If need be, just get a few screenshots from someone of the English version, so you know what the few menus are for. It's much more gaijin friendly than other war sims, since you can directly control your mechs in real time during each one-on-one battle.

It's lots of fun if you play the battles yourself and there's a huge variety of backgrounds to play on, loaded with parallax and all kinds of crazy special effects. The mechs also use sampled sounds.

Because there was so much spoken audio, it was mostly low-quality streamed ADPCM, and largely sounded awful.

The descriptions of the mechs weren't important to using them in-game and are pretty much just fluff.

There's a very annoying track that plays during the map section that would be worth replacing and burning a cdr for.

Owned this back in the day....I went from "Hey cool!  Its Military Madness with Mechs"!  to THIS SUCKS!!

Returned it back to Electronics Boutique that day....
