10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I've always wanted the PCE version of this, happened to stumble across this video.  I'll have to admit the Genny seems to win this one, but I'm NOT getting back into FEKA so my question is, is the PCE version worth it'd hefty price tag?  It's so rarely talked about so looking more info.

I haven't played either version but, I'd say try emulating it and playing it that way, see if you like it enough before dropping the cash, it's always sensible to try before you buy, especially when it comes to expensive retro games...

The Genny has parallax and the wavy background effects in the lava pit and underwater stages, but the PCE game trounces it in colors, shading, and details.  The Genny is also missing all the girlies you save, and who doesn't want to save tied up girlies?

It's hard to say any game is worth $100+ (or whatever retard price it's up to now), but it's definitely worth a CDR.

So they're already tied up, eh? That makes it easy.

For me the PC Engine version is so watered down without the shop, which by far and away makes the Genesis version much more fun to play.

With the Genesis version allowing you to pick the order of your stages, as well as plan out how to save up money to get the best equipment (or focus on other things like magic or health), it makes it far more versatile - this more than makes up for some extra colors on the CD port. It was hard to quantify but playing the PCE port in Ootake it just felt looser, control-wise, than the Genesis port. Sega really did a great job reprogramming Capcom games on the Genesis, and Chiki Chiki is no exception.

Honestly, if you're not going to get the Genesis port, I would not even bother spending the money on the inferior Super CD version. Burn it on a CD-r and then come back to us to complain about the game's awful sound effects.

They're both cool ports. Not as drastic a difference as forgotten worlds on genny or strider Pce.

Pce chiki chiki boys has that weird squished resolution but the extra detail is nice. Soundtrack is significantly better, maybe slightly easier?

The Pce port is also the version on the Japanese PSN store, so let that sink in.

If you're strapped for budget just get it on the genny. Outstanding game either way

On a TV it won't look squished. Remember that even though the PCE's standard resolution is close to square, that the TVs stuff got displayed on were 4x3, so that stretched things back out. So emulator screenshots will probably not look right. You have to adjust them to the proper display ratio.

They re-proportioned some elements, but not others. So it's pretty much always a mixed bag. That's why things look inconsistent in emulator screenshots.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!
