DE II - Drunk sequel

Yes, you read the subject correctly, drunk sequel. I started playing Dungeon Explorer II today and found that the control is a lot looser than the original. I kinda feel like I'm controlling a half-full bathtub. What's up with that?

I'll tell you exactly what's going on.

spenoza, in the first Dungeon Explorer as you may or may not have noticed all your characters have different stats, one of them being "agility." In the first game, your agility rating doesn't seem to have any noticable effect on how your character actually controls.

They fixed this in DE II, so your agility rating directly affects how your character controls. When you start out, obviously your agility is at it's lowest and it causes the control to feel "drunk" as you put it. As you progress through the game and your agility improves, so does your control correspondingly. At some point your character will control as well as any character from the first game, and then even beyond as you continue to become more agile.

As you may or may not know, the color of the "crystal beans" you pick up after defeating a boss (or changing characters) increase the stat of the corresponding color. If you wait a moment instead of picking up the crystals right away, they will eventually cycle through all the colors. I don't remember what color corresponds to agility offhand (light blue, maybe?) but you can increase your agility quickly this way.

In the first game I think it just affected your walking speed, not your turning or stopping responsiveness.

Yeah, in DE II it affects everything. Your character will be "up to speed" before you know it.

Between the early sluggishness and the waiting forever while the game seeks the CD track when you change areas, I am definitely not feeling the love for this sequel as much as I did for the original. I haven't run into anything yet that I think SuperCD capabilities were really needed for. If they'd cut the cinemas and speech and just stuck to chip tunes this game could have been a fine HuCard sequel, frankly. Maybe something later in the game will really WOW me or something.

I can't say for sure, but the game itself is probably too big to fit on a cartridge even if you converted all the redbook to chip tunes. Maybe if they'd done a 20 Mbit cart like SF2, but that's beside the point. If you thought the land of Dungeon Explorer is big, this one is HUGE.

The cinemas add a lot to this game though, too, and help move the story along.

But I don't think it's really fair to judge while playing the game on an emulator with fucked up sound emulation, no?

Give the game some time and (preferably) play it on a real console before passing judgement. It's more than a worthy sequel, and an absolutely great game in it's own right.

(Between you and me however, I too prefer the first game. Although in this case nostalgic memories probably play a huge role in that.)

I don't know what these mythical SuperCD "capabilities" are that you speak of, but perhaps you should just stop playing CD games in general, since you have the patience of a drunken surgeon.

A good game requires not patience. As entertainment, it should hook you immediately and keep you on that hook all the way through. Sure, that's an ideal, but I think it should be the standard against which we measure all games.

I can think of plenty of games (and books, and songs, and movies) that didn't hook me right off the bat, but that ended up being great.

Of course, in a perfect situation, the game (or whatever form of entertainment) provides immediate enjoyment and never lets up from there... like DE2 did for me.

I don't mind waiting a couple seconds for a music track occasionally, but when you're in town areas in DEII, every single house, hut, or doorway you enter cuts to chip music and when you re-emerge you have to wait for the CD track to cut back in. If it is between action areas that's OK, but considering how little most townies and hut-dwellers tell you, it gets frustrating.

So it's more the frequency with which you encounter this than that it happens. They should have muted the CD track but kept it playing so when you re-emerge from the house it doesn't have to re-track every time.

Maybe it's a side effect of the emulation, but I've played through the entire game and that was never a problem. I never had to wait for anything.

If those long pauses are an emulation artifact I'll give DEII the benefit of the doubt.

As for Xenogears, some neat ideas, but the story is WAY overwrought. It plays out like the creators were convinced they were making the next great Shakespeare epic but it's really just overly convoluted pulp. Still, neat in some places. Annoying in others.

It was rather badly translated and falls victim to the usual Squaresoft storyline hole problem (the sabotage/murder scenario in the Kislev prison is a shining example). There are a couple of really annoying parts near the end of the game, but other than that, it's quite enjoyable from beginning to end.

Just got this game from my girl for our anniversary a few weeks ago. Expensive goddang disc. However- in agreement with original poster- I too found the controls different than the hucard original. Of course after leveling up it all smoothed out and then some. I'm at the final stage - the big pyramid- been there for a week because I want it to last. I'm a first time poster by the way. Been a huge turbofan from back in the day when the system first hit US- it was the LAST system I've owned- I grew bitter when it went under. I recently restarted my collection and now have 152 games- a CD system, converter and arcade card, turboexpress and all that ish. Would LOVE if someone could tell me how the hell I could my hands on a reverse turbo tap. I'd love to make use of the arcade card by being able to play the six-button Neo-geo conversions. I'm in New York if anyone gives a hoot.

Thank you- I seem to have just found the appropriate board for that discussion- sorry for cutting into the Dungeon Explorer II Inebriation chapter.

Anyway I guess I'll just buy a pair of avenue sixes and take a chance- though I'm not much of a fix-it man or a hardware head or anything. I'll probably goof the whole thing up. I remember months back I was trying to figure out how to burn downloaded pc-engine roms and just gave up. I stick to the original chips and discs- which as you say attacks my money. I restarted my collection late last year- pretty much from scratch. Dug my old turbo out of my parents basement and won a CD-player on Ebay for a decent price. Had one back in the day and foolishly sold it for a crate of porn. In the feverdream of those magical youthful jagoff days perhaps a thousand or two wackoffs were worth it- but no longer. Never had the super cd upgrade back then though- never got to play Dungeon Explorer II or Dracula X until now. I've come a long way from the back-then amazement of JB Harold to recently playing Konami's much-hyped and justifiably so masterpiece.
