2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Yeah I actually have TV Sports Hockey, Basketball and Football.

I try so hard to forget I have them....by excluding them out of my collection pictures

I swear dude, the controls for the rink fights on TV Sports Hockey felt just like Urban Champion for NES

Today, I've received three more games for the TurboGrafx-16 in the mail. In addition to the copies of Keith Courage in Alpha Zones and Takin' It to the Hoop SuperPCEngineGrafx gave me with the console, he had also bought me three other games from TurboStar (also known as TurboSage and Shubibinman) to, I suspect, enhance my collection. The three games are listed as below, as some comments about them:

Dungeon Explorer - Great! Now I have one of the games I wanted for the system. I actually was thinking that either this title, Blazing Lazers, or Soldier Blade was going to be the one I wanted and was found on just about everyone's top 10 HuCards. The other day, to note, I've seen a copy of this being new over at Amazon.com. There won't any attempts to throw me out of the forums due to the lack of this game much like what happened to TRON  8). This is the one game mentioned that was complete with the box (and I was expecting it to be much larger, actually).

Ninja Spirit - Hey, alright! I haven't really considered this one much in the past since I wasn't too enticed on learning about it before. Curiously watching Sunteam's video on the game, however, I've found that the music sounds pretty incredible, and it looks like it defies the hardware a bit, too. I was thinking that it would be the one bought that would be "one of the best, although it may not be for you", along with Military Madness. I can see this being a very enjoyable title. It comes with the manual.

China Warrior - Eeee :|...This was one of the titles that I was trying to avoid. With so many negative views on it, it only seems to be, at best, a poor-quality tech demo for the PC Engine and TurboGrafx-16. Yet, it does seem to be decent in some respects. I had a feeling this one was coming, and I just hope Black Tiger made a wise decision for getting me this ](*,). The game comes with the case.

I'll be expecting to get to these games soon enough, since I'm focusing, also, on recording videos of Keith Courage in Alpha Zones. I do feel a bit icky about having China Warrior in my collection, but the purchases were much appreciated. Thank you, Black Tiger and TurboSage!

DE and Ninja Spirit are awesome games, though I can't really comment on China Warrior.  :-#

But it's cool to see your Turbo collection growing.

Yet in the end i did get a copy of DE1&2 u.s versions of coruse.

Though i'll say buying a U.S DE2 hurt my wallet the most  :P

They, were two games i didn't get around to untile now due to the simple fact. That i collect games for other consoles such as the (neogeo) etc.

I did get tease for it last year and i do remember that thread  ](*,)

So far there not too bad and they are pretty good for gauntlet clones.

Of corse like with,Gauntlet by yourself not so fun but with friends i say a better experince.

No need to give an introduction of yourself, Ninja Spirit (currently HypeG, but can change again). I've known that you were Toneman long before I became a member here; you even provide the link to your YouTube channel in your signature. Sure, I won't be able to play the PC Engine titles by real hardware, but at least a good number of them have made it to the US. It doesn't really hurt me too badly if I end up missing them in an amount of years.

That's all very nice and interesting to say, TRON. Thankfully, Dungeon Explorer doesn't seem to have a dwindling health system, which I found really bothersome in The Gauntlet Legends that I've played in the arcade, which made a big quarter-eater :x. It doesn't seem to be the type of game that would be an enhanced experience to play with others to me like, say, the Bomberman series, meaning that it would be just fine to play alone.

I had managed to try out Ninja Spirit today. I can say, though I've never seen the arcade version, it is an excellent port of the original (and seemingly highly accurate to it, too). It was quite enjoyable, yet a hard game to beat. There was a lot of notable slow-down and flicker within several parts of the game, but I'm not sure if it was just my obtained copy since the game froze on me twice before the needing to have the connectors wiped clean.  I've managed to reach Stage 6 -Thunderclouds on PC Engine Mode (quite interesting, too, that it had remained in this name for the TurboGrafx-16 version, but I had a feeling that it was hard to edit) and Stage 1 - "Asura" for Arcade Mode (I didn't play too much from this mode, and it was very hard for me to beat). I've heard this game had won accolades for its hack-and-slash feats, and it certainly does look to live up to those expectations.

The flicker is unfortunately not just the case with only your copy of the game. Ninja Spirit, like R-Type, was an early game in the life of the PC Engine/Turbo so there's a lot of flicker and some minor slowdown. At least it only really happens during some of the bosses.

I also know what you mean about Gauntlet being a quarter muncher. DE is a much more dynamic game.

The flicker is also mainly during boss explosions, so it doesn't really impact gameplay at all.

No! Don't give up on China Warrior just yet!

No, I don't expect you to love the game (yet). First, I think the music is pretty awesome, especially considering that it was one of the earliest HuCards released in Japan. The music gets your adrenaline pumping!

Even if you are not impressed with the music, approach China Warrior as a rhythm game and see if you have more fun with it. Don't use turbo, achieve a zen-like state of rhythm-karate and you're bound to have HOURS of delight. :)

Hey, I know I'm crazy. I'm just trying to generate some love for China Warrior. :)

Sinistron

I agree Esteban- the game has good rhythm once you lock in-
I never understood why this early release is constantly shit on.  Obviously if we took it solely in terms of "for its time" it is a standout game due to the sprite size- but apart from that- it has a good rhythm, some great colors (that darken as night approaches in the open air levels), appropriate music, some strategy (figuring out the best way to "cheese" the bosses), and if you're in the right mood it's a lot of fun.  It's also a good measuring stick- if you can't beat China Warrior then you lack basic side-scrolling platformer skills and should probably find another genre

It obviously isn't a GREAT game- but all the crap it takes is highly uncalled for.

I think that's the point. Why do you have to be in the right mood to fully enjoy a game, unless it totally stinks. I have China Warrior, and along with Double Dungeons and Battle Royale, they have to be my least played TG-16 games. The control system to China Warrior is just too stiff.

That's a stupid point then- I have to be in a certain mood to play an RPG- does that mean that any game in that genre "totally stinks"?   :-k

Unless you assumed that the mood I meant regarding enjoyment of China Warrior was of the "I'm in the mood for a shitty game" variety- not at all what I meant.  A shitty game is a shitty game- being in the mood to play one doesn't change that.

as for the other two games you mentioned-
Double Dungeons and Battle Royale just flat out suck.

That is quite strange. What had happened to the previous post I've made last night? Was it too "hinty" for everyone to see if they want to play Ninja Spirit and would have liked to figure out how to get past the ninja pit on Stage 7 - The Bloody Battle themselves, or did I end up criticizing too harshly on Dungeon Explorer for it to be acceptable? Whatever the reason, I'll try not to do it again :( (and I'm certain I hadn't removed it myself, especially since Ceti Alpha had quoted from it approximatly seven hours after being put up).

Being "weak" doesn't necessarly mean that it's bad, to give some information. I was expecting the music to be a little louder from listening to sources that contain the soundtrack. I do think that the music is quite good for the system, as I've played the game again and made it up to level 7, even to the point where it sounds very saddening and dramatic for the theme.

That's odd Kirby, I read your post this morning and it certainly didn't contain anything worthy of removal. I surely didn't do it, and I can't imagine one of the other mods did. Posts have disappeared here before in the past, maybe it was some kind of database glitch?

I was actually going to comment on this. One of the many cool moments in the game is when you're cruising by the Princess for the first time with that music playing. :P

Since the soundtrack is fairly large for this type of game, there's quite a bit of variety (including ambient stuff) and you don't get to hear the bulk of the soundtrack until later on in the game(even with all the reuse of tracks).

I actually haven't been playing Dungeon Explorer as much as you think (or even with the TurboGrafx-16, for that matter). I've been busy this past week trying to complete my other games that I've purchased, and I had to take a couple of driving lessons this week, so I scarely found the time to play with it (and is the reason why I had not been able to upload any Keith Courage in Alpha Zones videos last weekend, either).

Princess Aki? I've actually find this to be quite true. I have had a chance to play Dungeon Explorer again, and the dungeons later on do have the eligant tracks played for them. I even like to sit for a minute or two and listen to the music in Cherry Tower (SOOO much controversy over a view that was a bit misunderstood :|).

The only Turbo God I know of is PCEngineFX. Perhaps I've angered him? Black Tiger could be a god, too, since he is the making of greatness and could have some godly traits, and he does like the soundtrack for Dungeon Explorer (in spite of making a sincere comment on the views of the music)...Perhaps Sunteam_Paul could be a god too; After all, it's unknown where the "Sunteam" part of his name came from especially since he works alone... 8-[().

Which session would you like to know? In the first playthrough, I've stopped at the boss Bullbeast, who was man-like in appearance (somewhat like the Minotaur) who charges at foes and fires shots . The second I've stopped after Alexis the Beauty on level 6, who shoots powerful enchanted spells that can even poison and turns into a skeletal figure after taking many hits. Lastly, for the third, I've stopped playing after beating the boss The Death Reaper on level 8; He resembles a large version of the warlock playable character and splits into four, requiring that his true self must be defeated, which the other three are false weaker versions of himself. Is that descriptive enough?

And then some, thank you.  I was trying to gauge how much of the soundtrack you had experienced thus far, and it sounds like you've heard quite a bit.  Perhaps you'll appreciate some of the later tracks as much as I treasure 'em all, or maybe not; it doesn't really matter, as long as you're having fun.  Do you have a Tap yet, so you can share the joy?

One of my favorite tracks comes during dungeon 11, I forgot what it's called. Another one is the final battle with Natas.

BTW, Kirby, I'll be in your town next month. I'll bring you a complimentary copy of TV Sports Football.

Lord Thag

The music in DE does kick ass. I always loved it back in the day. Combine that with fun gameplay, hilarious dialog ('Bullbeast is near and mad!') and you get 16-bit awesomeness that also happens to be multiplayer.

Damn fine music. I also really like the music in Military Madness and the Soldier series.

No, and I probably won't be able to have one for some time. I would have to need more controllers to play with other people, too.

That I would say "No." I don't want TV Sports Football, and I can't just have the random person come to my home, either :x. It doesn't matter if you're joking or not, but I know better than to answer the doorbell or phone at any time.

Yeah, um, it was a joke. I don't know where you live, and even if I did, I have enough courtesy not to show up unannounced.

@Kirby

That I noted of, but I was just stating this for awareness 8).

I appreciate the suggestion, but I don't have any interest to have Bonk's Revenge in my collection. I'm not too fond of the graphical style of this sequel.

Forget about the graphics, Revenge is all about extremely fun level design and bonus stages!

How do you feel about heavy metal music in general? So far everyone I've seen comment on the Lords soundtrack either hates it or loves it and those that hate it aren't fans of the style in the first place.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

I've never been a fan of "metal" but I love the Lords music- not only does it absolutely fit the tone of the game- but to me it's more than "metal"- it sounds funky and prog-rockish in parts- definitely a good thing.

Wow, those are my thoughts exactly. I can certainly understand why some people wouldn't like Lords' soundtrack because they aren't into that genre of music, but I have always said how perfectly it fits the game. Not just because of the theme, but as other posters have pointed out here in the past, the music will actually sync up with the gameplay at times.

How does heavy metal fit into Lords, I don't understand?

I don't mind metal, but I'm not a music person.  I just think they went with metal so that they could make the music LOUD for no good reason.  It is pretty distracting and out of place really.

Turbo D

I think that the awesome soundtrack is part of what makes LoT so bad-ass! I can't really imagine it with any other soundtrack!

Well again- it sounds pretty prog-rockish to me in parts- so perhaps it fits in the sense that if you look at most classic prog-rock album covers- they're mostly fantasy scenes.  It's more than that though.  The game just flat out fucking rocks- so why not have some loud, heavy "rock" music behind it?  Anyway, I find the music an enhancement to the game- not a distraction.

Agreed.  Considering the fantasy atmosphere, what would theme appropriate music consist of?  Zithers and pan flutes?  No thanks, I'll take metal.
