10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

That guy does all sorts of mods on systems he sells in his store, and yes he is from france. He used to do mods on comission but claims he's stopped since his store takes too much time.

Ive bought an RGB-modded 3DO from him in the past, and his website is a nice showcase of mods he's done for various systems. I like that he actually made a new dustflap for the region modded Pal snes, but seems he no longer even widens the slot on those he sells on ebay.

Ji-L87

That looks interesting, too bad it won't work on a Duo.

Looks very appealing to me. It is nicely presented but what do you guys think about the price? Seems I could buy an internally RGB modded system for not much more. Also kind of restricting in that you can't use it for CD based gaming.

Wasn't there someone here, from the UK I believe, who was producing a similar thing (albeit not as well presented) for a lot cheaper?

I bet one of the technical gurus here could whip up the same thing minus the flashy case for around $20. How involved is the RGB amp for a PC Engine?

grimm

otaku store is abit expensive overall id say..

GohanX

True, but that's still really cool.

CrackTiger

I would gladly buy this if I could trust that I'd be able to get component from it.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

SignOfZeta

That is really fucking cool. I would never buy it though since its Core-only.

I have built several of these, they are not that hard to make. My only problem was sourcing a reliable connector, a problem i still have not fixed. Modifying it to work on a tg16 is as easy as cutting off the tabs on the side of the connector with a hack saw blade. I sent prototype hardware to steve, and surely he could use his encoder chip to add any kind of output you would want on it. If anyone can source the proper connector i could build that very device for much cheaper.

Re the connector, what about using hard drive header plugs? Something along these lines: http://nfggames.com/forum2/index.php?topic=4283.0

If you could whip something like that up at an affordable price, I'd buy it from you in an instant. I'm dying to play my PCE in RGB.

This is what i have made so far, but its not perfect. I have sent prototypes to steve for evaluation. He believes it's workable. I can only build these in composite out. Steve can build them with everything including the kitchen sink. I would be more then willing to help, but if steve wants to take the reigns on this he can add it to his lexicon of services. Such a device can be built to hold every connector you could possibly want. I'm sure if there were enough people interested he might take a look at it.

I'm definitely interested!  :D

I still dont have a reliable source for a single piece connector. Anyone needing rgb, would need steve to make this thing. Like i said, it would be up to him, and there would have to be enough interest. As far as an rca unit goes, i could make it, but it all hinges on the connector.

Frank_fjs

I've contacted mamejay (he's a member here, local to me and good at console modding) and he reckons he can whip up something similar for a lot cheaper. It won't look as pretty as that expensive eBay one and will be using PC header pins for the connection to the console, but it will provide me with a nice RGB signal so I'm happy.

HercTNT

wipping up an external rca jack really is nothing. I'm not sure about an external rgb hookup. Then again i'm not familiar with rgb. I thought rgb modding was something you needed to do internally. At any rate, the original device i made came in a little black box designed to plug into the back of the TG16 and look official. When you turned on the turbo it also gave you a power light. Steve helped me with the wiring and it worked, sorta. My connector design was just not reliable. one day i hope to change that.

Frank_fjs

Re gaining RGB from the expansion port, no modding of the console is required. The PC Engine already outputs an RGB signal, you just need to tap into it and amp it up. Building an external amp isn't that difficult or expensive.

Shadow

hi guys, any news concerning this "mod"... I just bought the AV Box, so I will see :)

So...you bought it, but you're asking us for news?

Shadow

yeah, friend of mine sold it... googled it, bought it hoping it would work to my expectation... nobody has it yet?

bought it, to use it on my cores, have 2 core I's which are already "original" rgb from Switzerland/France, but have several white cores around with no cables :(

I don't think anyone else here bought it since there are much cheaper alternatives, ones that actually work with CD systems.

If you're actually paying in Euros it will make more finiacial sense, but still...not having CDROM2 is a %100 deal breaker for me, personally.
IMG

Shadow

easy... just wanted to connect my white cores, and for that it serves its purpose...

can you give me a link to the alternative solutions?

Nah man, I love teh hueys.  It's most of what I own.  I do own a super CD ROM, but If I had to wrap it up and put it away for a year I'd get by.

Well, if you just want composite there is already an OEM solution from NEC called the AV Booster. For this price you could even get a CDROM2, or at least a broken one, which also has composite.

For RGB there isn't anything official, but there are many many ways to make and install an RGB amp for about $10 in parts.

This is probably the best solution for people who don't tinker and need RGB, it's just that the price could be better. You can probably get an entire white PCE pre-modded for €80.

True. I have several AV Boosters, but looking for RGB... well actually have some modded AV Boosters which output RGB, but wanted something just plug and play :)

RGB Amp Mod for $10? well, looks like I have to google it :)

I have enough hardware already, but you can't have enough PCE's :)
