I think I am more upset that its only #5 on the list. And the ColecoVision beats it... Bleh. Also I think that the SNES has better titles than the NES... By a long shot. But to each their own.

It's not pc engine, it's the turbografx. Which is good instead of excellent.

Besides, this is a guide for a growing fad, not a top systems article :/

This shit didn't get me riled up until :

QuoteGame Boy

The original Game Boy may be one of the most influential and successful systems of all time, but honestly, most Game Boy games aren't that good. Also, playing Game Boy games on an actual green-screened Game Boy is a total pain in the ass. If you really want to play Pokémon, there are better ways to do it.
Hey, you know, Turbo might be tough to collect for these days but GB is smooth sailing.  Maybe I should thank this terrible website and article.  More for me!

Otaking

So many WTF!?!? moments in that article, but this tops it

QuoteWhat To Avoid....
Any Sega System That Isn't the Genesis
Aside from the Genesis, most retro Sega consoles didn't get much support, and what the games they did get weren't much fun. If you're collecting stuff you don't even want to play, what's the point?
errr... someone let them know about the Saturn and Dreamcast.

I notice the article calls collecting for the neo-geo snobbery wtf !? Yeah, aes is a rich mans game but it's not the case for the neo-geo cd and mvs.

I couldn't get past this:

"Note #1: For the sake of this article, I'm defining retro gaming as anything that came before the advent of polygons and 3-D gaming."

Jokes on him, seeing as there's real 3D poly games for half those systems, and there were 3D poly arcade games years earlier too.

Yeah, while I truely loathe these kinds of articles (what kind of weird group think causes millions of punks to use the phrase "in the wild" so consistently?) I think the real crime is constantly starting new threads that have nothing but a YouTube link in them. WTF does the OP thinks he is contributing to the forum? We all have YouTube and everyone knows about shitty link bait sites. We don't need them brought here.

That Sega quote is so terrible it really does seem like it was written to be hated enough to generate more links.

I'm not sure why everything on this forum has to be seen as some kind of "contribution", to be honest. I feel like there's a constant expectation of raffles, mods, whatever. Yeah, it's a dumb article, but isn't it ok to poke fun at things in the hobby? Just look at the bad eBay auctions thread that's been going on for a while.

Zeta, I could easily turn the tables on you. The only things I ever see you "contribute" are rants, such as the one above. If you want to continue to complain, that's fine. But don't have double standards just because you've been here 10 years. If you feel there's an issue, why not message the mods? But NecroPhile hasn't locked it so it seems like things are ok.

This forum has almost 5,000 members and yet the vast majority of them aren't here anymore. Yeah, people move on or have other priorities, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the members have stopped posting because of Debbie downers like you.

Nazi NecroPhile

Nah.  Most old timers agree with Zeta's cranky rants (to some degree anyway) or at least find them humorous.

While not against the rules, obviously, such threads as this really aren't worth much, but the only time they bother me is when the OP just posts a link and can't be bothered to comment themselves.  As little entertainment as yet another internet know-it-all written article/video provides, it's still 10x more entertaining than some noob begging for us to hook him up with dealz, asking what the difference is between an Arcade Card Duo and an Arcade Card Pro, etc.

I generally try to avoid reading webpages like uproxx, buzzfeed, upworthy, etc.  I also have never heard anyone say much of anything positive about said webpages which leads me to wonder how these pages get the traffic that they do.

Perhaps I'm biased by my views of the website, but I would doubt if this affects retro game prices in the end.

They thrive by controversy. If they can get people to click on it because it's controversy, they make the same money than if people clicked on it because they enjoy it.

There are so many good Game Boy games, I can't see how that can be overlooked, although I wouldn't recommend anyone playing them on the original handheld. GBA SP 101 is the way to go for that (or if you want to shell out some cash, a front-lit GBC is more comfortable).

Still, I think the other two can be skipped without significant loss. The AES is stupidly expensive, even if you get an MVS converter. The NGCD is all right, but many of the games on the system can be had elsewhere, leaving about a dozen exclusives. I recommend it to folks, but it's not a must-have.

The Sega CD is a vastly overrated console among collectors. Maybe if you're a hardcore RPG fan, the Lunar Games, Vay, and Shining Forced CD might make an investment worth it, but Android Assault and Silpheed are not actually that good (that might be personal, though, as I cannot stand the "2.5 D" overhead perspective; give me a standard 2D shooter!). What else does it have that other consoles do not? It's mostly polished ports, giving us good but not way better versions of Final Fight, Earthworm Jim, and Batman Returns.

Oh, and Sonic CD is the worst of the 2D Sonic games (unless you count Knuckles Chaotix).

For a very long time the Sega CD was not a collector's console, it was full of cheap fun to play games that didn't break the bank.  Obviously one of the better games on the system is (in my opinion) Popful Mail, but Flink is solid, so Terminator is fun, and for all the complaints people have about Sewer Shark I genuinely enjoy it as a rail shooter game.

To add a couple more, Jurassic Park is a very unique adventure game, if you like the Ecco games the arranged  OSTs on the CD versions are quite good, Micky Mania is a good showing (and feels like a spiritual predecessor to Epic Micky), Panic! is bizarre, and in general there are a number of good ports of PC titles on the system as well.  Is there junk on it, sure.  But you could say that of any system.

Thing is, Popful Mail is on the PC Engine (although it's not the same, I do admit), Ecco games are still found on the Genesis, and the original music is by no means bad, and Micky Mania is found on Genesis, SNES, and, in Europe, PS1.

I'm not saying it's all crap, but rather it's lackluster and doesn't rank, in my opinion, as one of the must-own add-ons. In other words, I don't think the author is trolling and the opinion that it can be skipped isn't outlandish.

Nazi NecroPhile

I'd say the FEKA CD is a must own add-on (assuming one has a Genny to begin with), just because it's so cheap.  There's more than enough fun games to make it worth the low entry price, especially if you wanna play RPGs or digicomics in English.

And for those who are less concerned with owning originals out there can also play the library with a cd burner will not need to pay for a entire library of games the cost is even more no-brainer when it comes to owning the system. Between NHL 94, the working design games, and the shooters, let alone the aforementioned fmv novelty it is a great thing for people to experience if nothing else. It's a real shame that the system was referred to as skippable :(

The source material for that comment was skippable.

I'm not dirty brown lover, but I have a Sega CD for Flink and Final Fight alone. My other Sega CD games I have are just bonus to me, I do not care for RPG's so the library is even more limited. I also never paid for a Sega CD, it was given to me and I worked a trade later for a complete CDX.
