2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

Hi everyone,

Being new here, I wanted to say hello, and introduce myself.  I've been a long time fan of the NEC brand of video game consoles, and over the years (from teen to adult) have built up a pretty good collection of hardware and software. So far the list of consoles:

TG-16 with TurboBooster
PC Engine DUO-R
PC Engine CoreGrafx (grey) w/CDROM2 Briefcase

I've built up a healthy list of games, but my main focus was on the great shooters these systems have.

A fellow member on these forums 'Sparky' referred me here, and I look forward to learning more about the system and it's great games.

Outside of the NEC consoles, I am a big fan/collector of the NeoGeo both AES/MVS variants.

Thanks for your time. :)

Mike

hey man, enjoy the place and the people, there is alot more action and good deals over here then that Canuckle moose forum you & I visit from time to time :)  see you on the boards.

Bernie

Welcome!  How many games ya have for the Turbo?  We like details like that.  :)  Whats your favorite game for the system thus far?  Mine is Beyond Shadowgate.  :)

mr.2jz

Thanks Bernie and Sparky for the welcome! :)

Bernie, I will post back with a list of games.  Not sure if this was the right thread/section to do that in, but if no one objects, I post back tomorrow.

Thanks,
Mike

Welcome, comrade. :pcgs:

I applaud the TG-16 + TurboBooster. A surprising number of folks here will rag on it, but I (we?) appreciate its true beauty.

There are many shooter fans here, so I'm sure you'll be able to have some decent conversations about the genre. We will happily make suggestions if there are particular games you like or, like me, you even love the oddball shooters.

The TurboBooster is the biggest farce of a peripheral to ever exist.

Ideally, TG-16 should have shipped with RCA jacks and composite video (I'm still not a big fan of the "proprietary" audio+video cord that shipped with CD systems/CoreGrafx).

But, sadly, NEC followed the Japanese sequence of hardware releases too closely (White PCE, RF only...)

Oh well.

The TG-16 was so massive they could have put RF, composite, RGB21, and s-video with stereo line level, headphone, and balanced XLR jacks on the back of the fucker and still had room left over.

Hell, the thing should have its own screen and speakers built in, honestly. An IFU w/ LT setup is almost the same size, and DOES have a screen and speakers...and a TV tuner, and a controller, and a CDROM...

TG-16...giant hollow piece of garage sale-bound crap who designed this thing!? I want to KILL THEM NOW!!!

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

I do agree..The TurboBooster is rather insane that it was shipped as an option.  I guess they figured North America had mostly older style TV's with RF only and so decided to remove the cost from the gaming system, and yield a little more profit per system, and to charge yet again for the composite connections, which really only use a few pins off the back expansion bus.  I did however pick up the Booster+TG-16 for a very good price.

The CD unit did have the AV ports and a memory save feature, but man did it ever cost $$$ back then..

I recall the TurboBooster Plus was AV out+Memory save.  Hehe...to think how much non-volatile RAM can fit inside the empty sections of the Booster, one could probably run every TG game from solid state, lol.

I do enjoy shooters, even the oddball ones. I look forward to all the future discussions.

Here's a quick list (I might have missed a few) of games I have currently:

North American:

Alien Crush
Keith Courage
World Class Baseball
Bonks Adventure
Bonks Revenge
Splatter House
Blazing Lazers
Raiden

Japanese:

Super Star Soldier
Dead Moon
Soldier Blade
Final Soldier
Aero Blasters
Dragon Spirit
Snatcher
L-Dis
Gradius II Gofer
R-Type I
WonderBoy III - Monster Lair
Super Darius

I'm currently looking for Lords of Thunder, and Gate of Thunder US releases.  I was hoping to find them here.  What are rough prices for those 2? Doesn't need to be boxed, just CD with jewel case/insert/booklet is fine.

Thanks,

Mike

Hello! Welcome to the forum!! Wow you have a lot of Turbo related stuff!!

which one of your PC Engine consoles do you use for playing CD's?

esteban

Goddamn.

I had written a nice response and my browser crashed. Goddamn.

Here's an abbreviated version:

1. Nice list of games :pcgs:.

2. Common shooters to try: CyberCore (Dragon Spirit w/ insects), Blazing Lazers/GunHed, SideArms (I suggest getting SideArms Special CD for original game + alternate "Before Christ" (B.C.) version of the game. It uses a power-up system similar to Capcom's 1942, though, and this may turn off some people.

3. There are tons of other shooters to recommend, of course :)

Thanks.  I hope to pick up another few games soon.

I generally use the CDROM2 unit from the briefcase to play tunes. The old school LED track number is great :)

Thanks for the list.  Sidearms is on my list to get.  I also want to pick up Lords and Gate of Thunder asap.  Trouble is finding them for a decent price.
