So I was in a used game store that had a small stack of PC Engine CD games that I was looking over.  I picked up a couple, Cosmic Fantasy 4-1 and La Valeur for $20 and $15 respectively.  The reason I created the thread though...

I was looking at a copy of Cosmic Fantasy 3 and thought it was odd looking.  The manual was black and white except for the Cosmic Fantasy logo but was in full color inside.  I looked on the internet and every copy of the game I could find a picture of was in a multi-disk case that had a full color cover.  The manual inside the multidisk case looks the same, but obviously there's artwork on the outside of the case that's full color.  Meanwhile, this game's case was a single case with no artwork on the outside.  Were there two different releases to the game?  Did somebody take out most of the guts of a game and put it in a new jewelcase or something?

I'd say it was an incomplete game shoehorned into an incorrect case.

I kinda figured as much.  An irritating thing occurred to me since, I looked at the two cases of the games that I bought and sure enough they aren't the right cases either unless I'm mistaken.  Both have clear plastic jewel cases rather than the solid white plastic the rest of my PC Engine games have.  They have spine cards, the correct manuals and packaging aside from the case.  I may at some point try to pick up some extra CD cases and swap in the artwork so it'll look more uniform on the shelf..  So it's not a big deal with them.  With Cosmic Fantasy 3 it's a bigger deal as it wouldn't look right unless I got a new case, I guess I'm glad I didn't pick it up.

Thanks for the responses.

At least CF3 is a common cheapy and you should be able to find another one easy enough.  By the way, if you want one that's 100% complete, make sure it has the 'official guide book' (kinda like part two of the manual).

Is there any useful information in there that can be gleaned by an English reader? I got loosies of the whole CF series recently.

I don't know if my copy has one or not, but a quick googlin' says it won't be of much use, as it is filled with character profiles, making-of sketches for the cut scene work, pics of the voice actors and game programmers, and sheet music for the title song.  Apparently it also came with a folded map with weapon/item chart on the flip side, but I don't think mine has that either.  :|
