I've never played a Castlevania game before, mostly because the games are so overpriced.  I'm mainly looking for Castlevania Bloodlines or Super Castlevania IV (not at nasal-raping prices, preferably) but I'll also consider the original NES game if the price is right.

You will be able to pick up the original NES version for a lot less than Super Castlevania or Bloodlines. I would say start with the original anyway. You get to see how the games evolve that way.

SOTN is great, I have it on the 360. But like I was saying, the protagonists from CV3 show up in SOTN. Without playing 3, you won't have the context to really appreciate it in SOTN.

If you're gonna mention a spoiler, at least say the protagonists are just clones, and are mini-bosses that Alucard has to fight.

GO NES or PCE.  Starting with the two mediocre games is a bit silly.

Well I was trying to support my reasoning with an example without completely spoiling it, but you took care of that handily. :)
