Seriously, though, it is very tough to relate to folks that feel that NES (or the 16-bit era) marked the beginning of video games... but even I am put in my place when folks talk about the various games and coin-ops that were around in the 60's / 70's (i.e. my uncle is really into old-skool pinball; he's also the one who got me into Atari VCS/2600 back in the day).

I know the times-are-a-changin' but it is still very difficult to tell my real-life peers that I like video games without feeling somewhat embarrassed (I'm talking about non-gamers and folks in the "professional" sphere). The fact that an overwhelming majority of message boards are populated by teeny-boppers only makes things worse (i.e. I feel as if everyone else in my age cohort "grew up" and moved on with their lives).

Eh, don't feel embarrassed.  Everyone around me knows I collect video games & Transformers, & watch cartoons(mainly anime)& I'm proud of it. :D

(First Post, yay!)

As per the original topic, I actually have *2* of those old promo tapes.

One with a buncha games, and another where they *really* hyped Lords of Thunder(along with some others).

For thier worth, I imagine they're either worthless or worth alot, I imagine if you found a very hardcore collector you could probably get a fair chunk of change for it, Since if you consider the responses to this post any indictation, it seems barely anyone got these tapes, so I'd imagine they're quite rare.

Now that I think about it I'm gonna go dig them out of a box and digitize them, VHS doesn't have a long shelf life, so working copies(of those that exist still) may be even rarer.

One thing I love about that scene with the kid holding the TG-CD is that no way in HELL would music be playing if you were holding the unit like that.  The TG-CD had no skip protection technology so the CD lens would skip like crazy if it was moving.

not to mention that neither the power cord nor the headphones are hooked up to the unit.  In fact, if you look closely its probably just a plastic jewelry box.  That little dipshit must have had some rockin tunes in his head.
The Turbo was Dual Core when Dual Core wasn't cool . . .

The headphones are indeed hooked up.  You just can't tell because the GIF is not in super HDTV.  The CD also has a little plastic cover that can go on the back to cover up the connection port.  I'm pretty sure it's the real TG-16 CD player.  I used to use mine to listen to CDs at night before I went to sleep.  NEC demands you use the TG-16 AC Adapter and not the one for the TG-CD.

My family's first real game system was Intellivision. We played it for years until it finally died and then replaced it with an Intellivision III.

Back then, both my parents played with us and at first, they were the best, but I quickly surpassed my Mother but never did get quite as good overall as my Dad on games like Lock N Chase.

I remember Space Invaders arcade machines, and might've seen the odd Pong cabinet, but they were already old 'n moldy by that point.

I just picked up my third unique Turbografx-16 promo tape tonight.

Keranu, you're going to love it.

I'm pretty sure I've seen part of it online before. Two guys get "turbo charged" and make asses of themselves playing TG-16 games and rockin' out to CD tunes.

But the end is a crazy kalaedoscope of rapid cuts of PC Engine game footage, which is very cool and is a good way of showing what the system can do, but some of the stuff that comes up looks hilarious, in a UHF kinda way.

Anyways, I'm going to put all 3 videos onto DVD and should have the last 2 up on my site by the end of the weekend.

Although I HATE WMVs with a rather intense passion, I downloaded the first video anyway.  The audio seems a tad distorted in the high quality version.  Was it like this on the original tape, too?  I must mention first that the WMV abruptly stopped when they were showing off Ys for the PC Engine at approximately 10:30.  Downloaded it again and it did the same thing.  The low quality version played all the way through.

And now for my eagerly awaited comments about the HILARIOUS "Get Turbocharged" video (the first one on the site):

0:30 - These guys are really fascinated by the dude on the TG-16 box!

1:43 - Turbobooster to put out unbelievable sound and vicious pictures!  Try not to be too blown away by their example!  I agree that composite video out of the TG-16 is rather "vicious" with its fuzzy scrolling and color bars.  RGB is the way to go.

2:05 - I imagine that the dude on the right is REALLY helping his friend beat Mike Bison or Balrog or whatever his name is in Fighting Street.  Keep waving your hand there, buddy.  Your friend can't win without it!

2:19 - No need for a description here.  Just laugh the night away at these two dorks listening to the TG-16 CD player.

2:31 - OK waitaminute.  The case was stored vertically on a shelf.  Dude picks it up and opens it yet the HuCard (without a sleeve) and it looks like it is still aligned almost perfectly in the center.  HuCards without a sleeve flop around like a bitch!

2:43 - The close up of this dude and his goofy laugh is classic.  I want to buy 5 more TurboGrafx-16's!

3:25 - In Legendary Axe, I must penetrate the "evil place".  Ooooooo!!!!  Not the evil place!  Anything but that!  Noooooo!!!!

3:40 - I need to be a skilled marksman to survive R-Type?  I didn't know this was a light gun game.  Did the PC Engine even have a light gun?

4:17 - It seems like this dude just squeezed out a quick fart, then the camera pans over to the dude on the left who begins to enjoy the smell.

4:48 - There they are again!  These guys will never get laid.

4:53 - Wow these guys are sure excited that they defeated the first spider at the very beginning of level 1 in Legendary Axe.  Yeah, it took me weeks to get past that part, too.  They even have 50% of their life left.  Man, they're good!

6:24 - Ordyne is an exciting space shooter?  Is there even a space level anywhere in the game?

7:29 - NEC invites us to write them with our opinions of the PC Engine games that follow.  That's going to be kind of hard since the games don't show any titles and last for only about 4 seconds each.  I guess we could write in and say "I liked that one game... the one with the space ship.  Bring that over as it looks cool.  Don't bring over that game with the guy in it, though.  That looks boring.  So does that one game with the space ship.  The other game with the space ship is still cool."  It is amazing how few of the games shown made it over.  Most of them looked like crap.

9:03 - Waitaminute...  isn't that a SuperGrafx game?  I can tell just by all of the incredible SuperGrafx power displayed.

9:12 - Hang-On on the Sega Master System looks better than this.  Ug.

9:56 - I don't think American audiences would EVER be interested in something like this.

The End.

Thanks for uploading that!

Great comments joe, especially 0:30 ;) . I had the same exact problem as Joe where the high quality version cuts off when showing the PCE Ys but the lower quality showing the full thing. I absolutely love this video! It's about indenticle to the one featured on Aaron's PC Engine FX TV episode, but there seems to be some slight differences, like the sponsor voice saying some new things and the extra PCE footage at the end (which Aaron might've just cutted out to save space). I wonder where Aaron got his version from?

TOAST!

My favorite parts are when the 'good looking', 'cool'(er) guy(not the nerd/dork) says "toast!" and "huh hoo, hyeah!"

Apparently, the last 10% of the "high quality" video didn't get uploaded, so I'll reload it tonight.

The sound isn't much better in the original dvd video I captured, but I didn't have the audio quality cranked up all the way either.

I was forced to switch to wmv's after divx stopped encoding properly. No matter what I set it to, it only made huge sized files, which got larger in size as I turned down the bit rate. This made it impossible to make videos just under youtube's 100 meg limit. Plus they seemed to get slightly less butchered when filtered through youtube.

I've got a divx of the first promo video rendering right now. If it turns out alright, I'll put it up later tonight.

My favorite part is when they show how you can use the TGCD as a REAL CD player and when they put in some random CD, it plays this hilarious song and the 80's teen duo start dancing on their couch! Although to be honest, this scene was even funnier in the video Aaron added to PCEFX TV because it didn't have the sponsor talking when they were just about to play the CD and it made it sound funnier with the quiet pause. I also love how the setting seems to take place at dawn, though it's probably intended to be night. Nothing cooler than playing Turbo at dawn.

God this is so 80's-tastic, there is just too much too explain and some of it can't even be expressed!

I swapped the high quality wmv for "Get Turbocharged!", so it's now full length and added divx alternatives for all 3 promo videos(the Lords' divx is just the old file I had up before).

The divx's are almost the same size as the high quality wmv's, but the picture quality is poorer and the sound is not quite as nice.

Quote0:30 - These guys are really fascinated by the dude on the TG-16 box!

I like how the dork shrugs and give the cool guy a look that says, "go ahead, what's the worst that could happen?" and seconds later they're both electrocuted by orange energy bolts.  :P

Quote1:43 - Turbobooster to put out unbelievable sound and vicious pictures! Try not to be too blown away by their example! I agree that composite video out of the TG-16 is rather "vicious" with its fuzzy scrolling and color bars. RGB is the way to go.

The Turbobooster made a big difference for me, since it eliminated the  fuzzy scrolling and color bars that I got from using an RF switch. But I didn't know anyone with an RGB TV back then, let alone even knew what RGB was.

Quote2:05 - I imagine that the dude on the right is REALLY helping his friend beat Mike Bison or Balrog or whatever his name is in Fighting Street. Keep waving your hand there, buddy. Your friend can't win without it!

It looks like they're having a VS game and the dorkier guy is playing with an Activator.

Quote2:19 - No need for a description here. Just laugh the night away at these two dorks listening to the TG-16 CD player.

Makes me wonder if the whole thing even had a real director on the set, or if some guys from NEC just told them to play a few games, act "excited" and then show off their best dance moves.

Quote2:31 - OK waitaminute. The case was stored vertically on a shelf. Dude picks it up and opens it yet the HuCard (without a sleeve) and it looks like it is still aligned almost perfectly in the center. HuCards without a sleeve flop around like a bitch!

This probably ate up half of the special effects buget.

Quote4:17 - It seems like this dude just squeezed out a quick fart, then the camera pans over to the dude on the left who begins to enjoy the smell.

That's hilarious man. Everyone needs to read that and then check the video at 4:17.

Quote4:48 - There they are again! These guys will never get laid.

I think that these guys would have no trouble getting laid. Just not by women.

Quote7:29 - NEC invites us to write them with our opinions of the PC Engine games that follow. That's going to be kind of hard since the games don't show any titles and last for only about 4 seconds each. I guess we could write in and say "I liked that one game... the one with the space ship. The other game with the space ship is still cool." It is amazing how few of the games shown made it over. Most of them looked like crap.

It would've been nice if NEC actually had listened to their customers and if it really was true that they were commited to only bringing over the best PC Engine titles(as the announcer states just before that).

A lot of those PC Engine games looked like they could be fun and back then, everyone I knew wasn't so concerned with playing games that were state of the art graphics wise, we just wanted more games to play for our new systems.

I remember how it seemed like forever to get some more Genesis games after the initial batch, which I rented to death. The draw of new games is part of what got me to buy a Turbografx in the first place.

Which is why NEC's "It's easy to beat the competition when you've got them outnumbered" campaign was a good idea... if only they'd kept bringing over a steady number of quality games.

As for graphics, back then we didn't all have the benefit of hindsight from 20 years in the future, where we now judge all games for any console against the entire generation of it's time.

Everyone I knew back then just wanted something that they thought looked/sounded good compared to an NES game. Even though the Sega Master System already offered that(at least I got to enjoy the SMS in it's day).

It's ironic when I think of how many ugly games were thought of as awesome and how many beautiful games were ignored as ugly back in the day.

Anyways, I know that at the time, I would've been impressed by the overload of clips.

Quote9:03 - Waitaminute... isn't that a SuperGrafx game? I can tell just by all of the incredible SuperGrafx power displayed.

That made me wonder for a minute if NEC had even made the PC Engine collage or if it was put together in Japan for PCE demos.

Quote9:12 - Hang-On on the Sega Master System looks better than this. Ug.

I actually thought that it(Bari Bari Densetsu?) looked pretty cool for the 2 seconds it was up.

Quote9:56 - I don't think American audiences would EVER be interested in something like this.

No, but it's a good 3 second example of how CD games can offer digitized graphics and clear voice.

At that point, there was only Fighting Street and Monster Lair and as a Turbo CD owner back then, I know how badly I wanted a game to use english CD voice and to do more than those first 2 games did.

Also, to this day I freakin' love the voices in Fighting Street.  Funny thing is that they sound just like the arcade.  Instead of "Round One" it's "wound won!"  And every enemy says with the same voice "You've got a lot to learn before you beat me try again kid eh heh heh heh heh heh!"

I have multiple copies of Keith Courage, but no, I don't keep them together on a shelf, just in case.

I took a look at the dvd video of that scene, because the game next to it definately didn't say Keith Courage on the side. After a close look, it appears that the shelf is full of cases with different names on the spine, but all (except one?) of them have a Keith Courage manual.

I have every line and every voice of Fighting Street/Street Fighter memorized to this day.

Some of the best are-

"I never win!" (I'm number one?)

"You a big who!" (something about a fool?)

" Oh gay baby!" (Okay baby?)

I like that the Turbo CD Fighting Street kept the japanese names of Ryu & Ken's special moves. I was surprised when one day, years after mastering the Turbo CD game, I found a Street Fighter arcade with the giant buttons intact, pulled off a hadouken and Ryu yells out "Street Fighter!".

Playing through the arcade did at least confirm that the voices were faithful to the arcade, like with Forgotten Worlds.

Keranu the first couple of times I saw that, I thought that it was a bonus round to the mahjong game, which would be pretty cool.

Like if you were to ask a North American gamer, "what would it take for you to try a mahjong video game?", their answer would probably be something like, "I don't know, maybe if you could beat the crap out of your opponent's face every time they have to king you."

I just noticed that at 2:07 in the video, where they're playing Fighting Street, Mike kicks their(Ryu's) ass. Then it cuts to the dorks high fiving each other shouting "ya!".

And then, at the last second, the "cool" guy does a gay wave (the kind of gesture one would make while saying "oh behave!") at the TV, while mouthing "ow!".

Also, the two clips of the guys 'dancing' are actually different. And in the last one with the "Sensational Sound!" subtitle, the dork is making a gesture that can only be...

-giving a blow job while tickling the guy's balls. I'm not being sarcastic, check it out 4:47 in the video.

In case this post is one step away from being banned, I won't say what it is clearly obvious the same guy is doing with his other hand.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Hahaha, I love that dance the nerd does in 4:47, though to be honest with you, I believe he is playing air guitar and not tickling a sack of balls :D .

I just put together a new video inspired by and made from the "Get Turbocharged!" tape, called "Turbo Goofs!"

You certainly have a much more active imagination than I do Keranu. If that guy is playing air guitar, he's terrible at it. :P

Hey guys, i have all these videos in one VOB file on my hub. I got them all from Aaron Nanto.......the dude that owns this incredible site.

My brother put them all on DVD for me, and then i ripped it, and rar'ed it.

it is kinds crazy.......the old ass clothes styles, and the stupid ass faces these kids make playing the games. TOTAL cheese. I don't think i ahve ever seen a cool ass home video. All of them must have the casting call for "total dorks apply only" sign in front of the audition room, with some amateur director that thinks he's the next Martin Scorsese, when he couldn't direct traffic if he had instructions.

Nostalgia sake is the only asset to keep you watching these goofy ass video's. Even if i had seen these back in the day i would have thought "Lamers".

I was so happy when Aaron made me these video's. I didn't even ask him to, and he sent me some free stickers, and a refrigerator magnet i believe.

I bought something other than merchandise from his website, and he sweetened the deal.

Aaron is a darn nice fella! :D

I checked out the Turbo Goofs earlier today and got a huge kick out of! The music match up you did with the Lords music fit the scene perfectly, I was laughing my ass off! Great job dude!

Hehe, well actually come to think of it, he could be playing an air bass guitar since he's picking the strings with all of his fingers :D . I can easily see how another person would think he's scratching a sack of marbles though  .

We need to find these dudes and get them to join up here on the forum so we can interview them.  Maybe they can even make a new Turbo video with updated special effects, HDTV video and 6.1 DTS ES surround sound.  We also need to find the li'l dipwad who dances with the Turbo CD player.  I bet that's Keranu, though.  His age seems about right now.   :D

Keranu

Dude I only WISH I could dance half as good as that kid!
