What Turbo-Inspired Cartoon would you wish for?

Okay, so we got the Zelda cartoon, we got the Mega Man cartoon, we got several Sonic cartoons, and we got quite a few versions of Mario in cartoon form.  But as far as I can recall, and as far as a quick internet search would reveal, I don't think there were any western cartoons of Turbo/PC Engine franchises.  (I do seem to recall seeing a Bonk comic, but it's been a long time so maybe I'm imagining it.)  If I am wrong, please correct me!

If I am right, this suggests the question: what Japanese-origin Turbo title ought to have had a terrible western cartoon rendition?

Keith Courage & Bonk both seem like a natural choice to me, but I think a Ruby-Spears take on Monster Lair would have been funnier!

machomadness

I'd say a Bonk one. It's the more natural choice. I'd love to see Adventure Island as well, but I don't know if we can count that as that was on Nintendo first.....

Dragon's Quest and Air Zonk. NO ANIME. 80s western-style voices and styling only.
If anyone gets any leads on a "fair priced" copy of Coryoon, please lemme know!

You mean Dragon's Curse, right?

I think a Keith Courage cartoon would be hilarious, seeing as the original version was based on an anime anyway.

Other than that, I really don't know.  The thing about American adaptations is that I don't trust them not to screw it up.  I mean, the same company that gave us the Mega Man cartoon (which was actually pretty decent) also gave us a Street Fighter and a Darkstalkers cartoon, one was basically G.I. Joe with Capcom's characters slapped on (and which couldn't pronounce "Ryu" right if their lives depended on it) and the other had Felicia travelling in a van with some computer nerd.

They weren't bad, but when compared to the likes of the twelve-part Ys anime, the Salamander OVAs, Street Fighter II:  The Animated Movie, the Fatal Fury TV specials and motion picture, and so on and so forth, one starts to think that characters and concepts invented by Japanese folk should be handled by Japanese folk.

Except for Sonic the Hedgehog.  America pretty unambiguously did him better.

Arkhan Asylum

China Warrior.  That would make an amazing cartoon.  An obnoxious Bruce Lee ripoff, yelling and chugging tea while punching armless monks and kicking tree branches.

Awesome selections.  For me, I was actually counting on them being messed up in the adaptation. While I enjoy the american Mega Man for what it is, I honestly think it's pretty awful on a story & technical level.  I just think it's funny.  ^__^  Still, all of these shows do have their high points....

If Adventure Island counts I think that'd be an excellent choice, but in that case I would have to vote for New Zealand Story instead.

If you overlook Bravoman, you are missing so many opportunities! Dr. Bomb, the other random characters... win!

RONDO OF BLOOOOOD!!!!

Both legendary axe and Ninja spirits could make for a cool OVA. I'd like to see a Splatterhouse anime, lots of demons bursting and what not, no tentacles from what I remember on the game. I could be wrong.   Of course a Valis mini series would be awesome too.

Valis practically is an anime, in game form.

While I wouldn't like an actual Keith Courage cartoon outside of the humor value, I recently thought that someone should pick up the Mashin Eiyuu Wataru anime and "gag dub" it into a Keith Courage cartoon, and make up totally ridiculous dialogue, similar to what happened to Samurai Pizza Cats, Duel Masters and Yu-Gi-Oh the Abridged Series.

Nazi NecroPhile

I'd like to see some Ys cartoons.  Lucky for me they exist, or maybe not so lucky if they suck.

I have an Ys DVD... I watched a bit of it; it's pretty decent and very reminiscent of the first two games. I don't care for anime, but for Ys, I'll make an exception.

Agreed with AllyourBlood, I have brought these up before, but for the new guys do yourself a favor and pick these up.  Excellent cartoons IMO.

So the question is, "What shitty off-model adaption of a Japanese property do I wish existed?"

Sorry, my non-hipster mentality mostly confines me to enjoying thing I actually think (correctly or not) are good. I don't often watch things I think are irredemable shit.

I honestly missed the part that asked for a terrible cartoon. I just made suggestions for games I thought would've been awesome. And I stand by them. Dragon's Curse would've made a great US cartoon.

But aren't they all terrible? Or do you actually like Captain N, etc?

I'll take the two episodes of Sonic that were made in Japan (which encapsulated the games perfectly) over the 100 or so episodes of the American produced piece of shit Sonic show.
IMG

Arkhan Asylum

Captain N was pretty good when I was 3.  Even if Mega Man looked like some little Italian bastard in a suit, and Simon Belmont was a fag.

Dragon Slayer Legend of Heroes also got an anime.  I saw it years ago, but I don't think it was the whole story from what I recall. IMG

And there was Dragon Knight anime's as well.  Though, both are multi-plat games.  Bravoman would've rocked!  How about a Drop Off! :D  Kieth Courage & Bonk, Dungeon Exporer would rock, maybe by ...what's there names that did Thundercats, Silver Hawks, & Tigersharks?

Awesome, I've never been called a hipster before.  I must be branching out!  ^_-

I thought about it, and I think I see what people are saying.

I've been a fan of Japanese pop culture for some time now, and I feel like, living in North America, you kinda just have to take the American appropriation & maltreatment in stride; I was just trying to take a lighter view of it, to counterbalance my usual too-academic comments & questions.  However, I can see now how my question could come off sounding negative.

My bad!  I'll try to think more carefully before posting a topic or response next time.

Captain N sucked, but I thought Mega Man and The Legend of Zelda were pretty decent.  There's also an American toon based on Magi Nation (a european cardgame turned gameboy RPG) which is kinda-watchable.

I agree though that usually, Americans screw it up.  Sometimes with interesting results though, so its not always a total loss.  Matter of fact I need to pick up the Street Fighter cartoon...

Keith Courage is actually based on an anime, Mashin Eiyuu Wataru (Spirit Hero Wataru).

Thundercats, Silverhawks and Tigersharks were all done by Rankin-Bass, who also did an awesome adaptation of The Hobbit and The Last Unicorn, and were responsible for all those stop-motion christmas specials you grew up with.

EDIT:  And I too have seen the Ys anime.  Ironically, I saw it at around the time the Lord of the Rings movies were in theaters, I watched it with a friend, and my friend said "Whoa, this is FAR better than the siege of Minas Tirith!"

TrûMisery

I think Bonk would be good... but a Neutopia style cartoon would be good as well...

Overall though, I think I would have to go with a Sapphire style cartoon... it would be a new episode every week easily... galaxy police... there is so much you could do with that...

Dragon Quest was actually pretty damn sucky... but then again, that is Nintendo anyway...

Sapphire is an offshoot of the established anime/game series of Yuna ;)

Umm actually, Dragon Quest is owned by Enix (now Square-Enix).  And I honestly didn't think the English dub of the anime was that bad, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Japanese version was eleventy billion times better.

The idea of a Sapphire cartoon brings to mind another... why not a Gate of Thunder cartoon?  Especially if you could get the guy who does all those monotone announcements ("Game Over") to do something for the show.

RR1980

Valis could have been a great anime serie. I can see the tagline in the US: "She's a school girl by day, She-Ra by night!" hehe

Edmond Dantes

It's funny, but now that I think about it, I could almost swear there was a Valis anime... okay, according to Wikipedia there was, but it was little more than a promo.

I suppose Devil Hunter Yohko works as a substitute, anyway.  Hey, weren't there PC Engine games of that?

I wish I could contribute more, but my Turbo library is small and games I don't immediately have on hand often slip my mind.

Oh, hey, I got one:  A Military Madness cartoon!  The plot could be about a commando and his elite squad who save the moon from the evil Axis powers on a weekly basis!  Basically, G.I. Joe on the moon!  Hey, I like G.I. Joe!  This could work!

When I was a kid, I never missed an episode; I loved it. Granted, I was nine, but at the time, I don't remember a single kid in school who had a Nintendo that didn't watch the show. I haven't seen it in 15+ years, but I have fond memories of it, along with the Super Mario cartoon, Legend of Zelda, Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors -- heck, all that stuff. Video Power? Loved it.

Anyone remember Turbo Teen? Probably the stupidest premise for a cartoon ever, but it was a hit amongst all the kids I knew.

I loved turbo teen!  My brother and I used to watch that and Fat Albert back in the day.  Not to mention many episodes of Duck Tales, The Real and Fake Ghostbusters, and Fang Face.
