is the Hydlide of the PCE.

Everyone is like OMG GAEM SUCKS..

but i like it.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS.

If I spent more time with it I might enjoy the adventure in spite of its many flaws, but as it is it's just an ugly, buggy trainwreck.

I've been playing a few games using mednafen to "try before you buy" to see which games I like or not and which are worth dropping the coin for. :-" My only gripe with this one is that you have to sit through that stupid intro EVERY time you play. :x Gameplay wasn't terrible, but I might enjoy it more if I knew what was going on and why I was killing weird looking creature in a game that plays, to me, a little like Megaman. :-k Not really a purchase worthy title in my eyes though. I can at least say I gave the game a chance. :(

dude it costs like 5$ and the cover alone is worth 5$!

:D

It's a pretty clunky friggin game but it's not like its a 60$ raer hucard that sucks... its a 5$ derp title that isn't too shabby!

I usually end up liking the games that are less popular, and Energy isn't that bad of a game. I haven't played it in a while (don't own it yet) and probably wouldn't go out of my way to buy it individually but in a lot of other pce games.

Where's my goddamn penny?

Guess the price depends on where you get it, as e(vil)Bay only has one at 5 bucks and it's a loosie. All the others are double or higher. Still not buying it... Unless it comes in a lot or an individual price of "free".  :P

esteban

I played through a fair bit of Energy many years ago...the problem is that it was a clunky/awkward experience. I found myself  spending much more time with other "mediocre" titles that were more immediately accessible (such as Rastan Saga II).

I don't mind spending time with games of ill-repute, but Energy really hasn't been able to hold my interest.

You can toss "Chew Man Fu" (Be Ball) into the same category as Energy: they fail to captivate me. In turn, I have to  little -to-no sustained interest.

Things change, of course. I may find myself trapped in a well with nothing but GT + Energy + 9 dozen AA batteries.

Only time will tell...

Worst PCE game ever. Full stop.
Self proclamed Aldynes World Champion

Amadeusama

No way near the worst PCE game ever.
It is way too easy (once one knows how to operate it, like switching through the items, etc.).
In other ways it is way too hard, like the friendly monster in Level 1. I died a million times down there walking off the ledge into the water, before I figured I had to jump into the water and it would lift me up and carry me to the other side.
Not suggested for people who don't read manuals on principle.
So I actually bought me a book on Mahjong ...

Thoughts: NO.

SignOfZeta

When I saw this topic I was going to make a post that said something like, "This game sucks so bad it should have been for MSX", knowing that Arkhan would chime in to defend the MSX and probably Energy since he loves shit that sucks...

...that was before I noticed it was Arkhan who started the topic in the first place and all the joy was then sucked out of the room as I realize I was robbed of this simple joy.

The game sucks. I still like it more than Circus Lido, but it sucks.

I got it for 6 moneys comprete!  From hit japan maybe.

I think Drop Rock hora hora is the worst game on the PCE probably.

and Zeta, what's wrong with the MSX?
"hudrhrrrdrhdrrurr choppy scrolling" isn't an answer.

If that were an answer it would mean PC88 and 98 suck too.

Zeta's post made me smile, but, to be fair, Ark did state that this was the Hydlide of PCE games—which is as fair a comparison as any.

Someone even took the time (a few years ago) to compare a few screens between the original MSX and later PCE version of Energy...which, come to think of it, I'm actually interested viewing again.

And I agree with the person who stated that $5 was worth spending for the cover art alone. Seriously.

There is no Energy game on the MSX (or if there is, I sure haven't seen it), and I'm the one who said it's worth it for the cover art.

Nothing wrong with the MSX, PC88, or PC98 for games, as long as they aren't scrolling games.

Arkhan Asylum

The scrolling games aren't even bad.  People just can't get over the jerkyscrolling .
and FWIW, alot of games overcame the scrolling issues.  Gulkave was smooth as shit and its an MSX1 game.

Yeah, that video you linked was too chunky for me. You may think chunky scrolling isn't a problem, but it is for a lot of folks. I think games that were designed in a room or screen-based fashion worked much better on the MSX, and other early PCs. Smooth scrolling makes action and shooting games much better.

Arkhan Asylum

I don't get what the problem is though. It's not like the sprites are chugging along too.
I'll agree the screen to screen games are better usually , like Drasle Family on MSX2 is better than NES for that simple reason (It's easier to keep bearings on hand drawn maps).

Agreed. I felt like I was watching Xevious 2; Revenge of Drywall

But again, That's not a reason to completely throw the system out the window. The music and color pallette of the MSX 2 are impressive. And the fact that its so damn obscure that by simply owning one you are l33t and part of the mini-club.

The scrolling for Energy is hard to get through. It's like a miniature intermission every time you change screens. You could eat popcorn, do homework, catch up on your taxes, do the brakes on your car, or write another book for the bible. Maybe in the extra time, you could fix a system with parallax. That said, It has virtually no redeeming qualities, other than the cover art which is fair to midland.

PCE Hydlide.

SignOfZeta

I actually don't have any problem with the MSX. It was just a joke.

I also think Energy is worth $5 just for the cover. Its a great cover.

PCE Hydlide.
The thing about MSX2 is there are multiple screen modes. The 2+ even has a 16 million color mode.  Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, Amigatards!

the bitmapped mode known as Screen 5 has 16 colors for the whole screen.  It sounds like that'd be pretty lame but look at Fray on MSX2... :)

Again, I have no problem with the MSX. I just don't like the jerky background scrolling. Even if the sprite movements are smooth, they move smoothly across a jerky background. I would play MSX games that use room to room or perhaps RPGs, but I wouldn't play an action-based scrolling game. It is hard for me to look at.

I played Energy once or twice via emulation in, like, 1997 and I remember my biggest gripe with it (aside from the sub-NES quality graphics) was that the game took like 30 seconds to change from one screen to the next rather than just scrolling like any normal game.

That single aspect tried my patience so much I never really was able to give the game an honest chance.

Ark, I'm not teasing you: if ever there was a game begging to have its play mechanics fixed and overall experience streamlined, it would be ENERGY.

Your fate, I believe, is to salvage the rickety, leaky, blundering barge of ENERGY and transform it into the smooth, swift, effortless canoe it could only dream of becoming.

The term is revamp, and their is no such thing as an Indie developer in game. As with film, it is their or it is not. Their is nothing wrong with this game at all, It is basically Demon City, and Akira rolled up together, with a dash of Crystalis. How many people actually finished the game instead of locking it off, without trying to go up the chasm.
