What exactly is the promo version of Yuna?

I've heard some conflicting info on this. Is it just a demo or is it a promo version of the full game? And what were the circumstances behind it? If it's really promotional, then I assume it wasn't for sale, so was it given away at an event or free with the purchase or pre-order of something else related to the PC-FX or Yuna series?

kazekirifx

I have it and from what I can tell it is identical to the demo which is on one of the PC Engine fan demo discs. It's not the full game.

I had assumed that it was used as a playable demonstration in stores, but I don't really know. Could be a giveaway with a magazine or something.

Filler

I can tell you that the PC-FX I got in Japan came with that Yuna disc so I've always figured it was a pack-in with the system.

kazekirifx

It might've been a bonus given with purchase of the system at certain stores.

Aggie Tsubi

All PC-FX systems were in the exact same packaging, right? I can't imagine the Yuna demo was ever physically packed INSIDE the system box when there's nothing on the box advertising that fact. But, yeah, maybe it was given out with system purchases at certain retailers for a specific length of time.

Anyway, thanks for the info, guys. :) It's a bummer if the demo is exactly the same as the Yuna demo on that other demo disc. It'd be cool if they differed at least in some way.

kazekirifx

Definitely was never in the box. Afraid I can't offer anything but speculation about how the disc was distributed unless I can find a Japanese site that has that info.

May you post a picture of that particular promo version?

Thx,

couldn't find any detailed informations in particular about the release of this game neither. But the site below at least states a vague release date, which would be February 1996. So if it was a pack-in it must have been a late one.

Yes and no - there was a different Rolfee version packaging, but that was just a sleeve over the regular box.

Cool, I never knew about the Rolfee outer slip. Were those ones packaged with Megami Tengoku II? I see pictures of it all over the sleeve.

NecroPhile

Right, that's the one.  I assume the game was not packed inside, though.  Is there even room?

Going off of this one guy's collection, it seems like he's showing it all as one set, game included:

I found it on a French board, though, so I can't read any of the guy's post.

In theory, you could easily fit a jewel case in the extra space on either side. The controller and cables are all stored in the styrofoam ends. And I guess it's also possible that the Rolfee sleeve could be slightly bigger than the standard box, with a spot for a game. I have a Japanese 360 that's kind of like that.

SuperDeadite

The Rolfe sleeve fits snuggly over the normal box.  It's actually a Rolfe poster on the inside, though you basically have to cut it in order to hang it on a wall.

Cool. Came with Megami Paradise II at Sofmap.

Aggie Tsubi

Ah, I was wondering what Sofmap was. So it's a retail chain, eh? Well, if NEC made a special edition available to one chain, then I suppose it's plausible that another chain, or maybe even Sofmap at some point, may have given out the Yuna demo with systems.

kazekirifx

Yeah. It's possible. I've been given small promotional items with PS3 games, etc. when buying them at particular retailers in Japan.

Another likely explanation is a magazine bonus. That's an uber-common pattern in Japan.

Yep, you're right.  I was thinking Megami Paradise II was a 'big' game, which would be a pretty tight squeeze.
