10/31/2023: Localization News - Dead of the Brain 1!

No, NOT a trick, a Halloween treat! Presenting the Dead of the Brain 1 English patch by David Shadoff for the DEAD last official PC Engine CD game published by NEC before exiting the console biz in 1999! I helped edit/betatest and it's also a game I actually finished in 2023, yaaay! Shubibiman also did a French localization. github.com/dshadoff/DeadoftheBrain

I just got done testing about 60 NES carts that I got a hold of.
Cleaned the contacts, pop it in a retrobit console, make sure it fires up, rinse, repeat. So today, between eye-bleeds, I was able to muscle through about 30 seconds of 60 different games. The last one being Silk Worm (not terrible), which I actually tested in my genuine, toaster, NES.
During this madness, i came to one conclusion...these retrobit machines are garbage.
Built like shit with terrible connections.  Worst part about it, the pin virtually locks the game in and it feels like R2D2 going through a meat grinder when you finally pull the game out.

There is just an unparalleled satisfaction of real NES hardware.
I still have mine from childhood, and on my third 72 pin.

So what was the latest, actual NES game you played?  (No ROM/emulation/VC)

I think it was Jeopardy a few years ago. I keep my NES games in individual zip-loc bags, after cleaning the contacts with alcohol.

I have two official Nintendo game holders and then one rubbermaid container that holds 40-50 NES games. No boxes unfortunately. I do have a good sum of manuals for the games though.

On actual hardware? Damn it's been a long time it's hard to remember. I have an orginal NES as well as the top loader but not the real estate to keep them hooked up. I play some of my favorite NES games on the Wii VC for the time being. The last game I played through was Faxanadu. Love that damn game, probably my favorite NES game next to Castlevania III and the original Zelda.

roflmao

Life Force.  I wanted to show my son how much better Salamander on the PCE was. :)

Super Team Games using the Power Pad with my 5 year old. I died not even a quarter of the way through the course. She ran straight through like a champ. Sucks getting old(er)... :(

EDIT: Typed the wrong game... fixed.

turboswimbz

Mario about 15 years ago.
NW: Hey, I made it on this psycho's Enemies' List, how about that ?? ;)
BT: Look at how the fake SFII' carts instantly sold out and were immediately listed on eBay before the flippers even took possession. Look at Nintendo's overpriced bricks. Look at the typical forum discussions elsewhere. You can't tell most retro gamers anything!

Worth buying?  Looks like a decent run 'n gun and I was thinking of hunting down a loose copy.

I played Rolling Thunder for the NES a few months ago.  Didn't get too far, but the controls are pretty good.

Mighty Final Fight. This morning. :D

Arkhan Asylum

This "max-level forum psycho" () destroyed TWO PC Engine groups in rage: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook "Because Chris 'Shadowland' Runyon!," then the other by Aaron Nanto "Because Le NightWolve!" Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together... Both times he blamed the Aarons in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged, destructive, toxic turbo troll gang!

TheClash603

Mike Tyson's Punch Out, 6 months ago.

Don't know why I haven't touched my NES much lately, just haven't been in the mood I suppose.

It is a fun action packed game. Each Joe has their own unique attributes such as jumping ability and gun type. I'd definitely hunt one down for a decent price. I was actually able to find both versions of G.I. Joe for the NES. I've played the Capcom version a little and it plays very similarly to the Taxan version.

csgx1

Thanks for the insight on G.I. Joe games.   I haven't played either, but they look fun.  They must be decent games or maybe not common based on prices they sell for on fleabay.   Might have to get both if I can find them for a decent price.

Almost makes you wonder if the failure of the Turbo here in the states wasn't planned. We got some good games, but some are just plain bad. Of all the games that they could have ported over or developed here, why did they pick what they did? Ok, back on topic. :-"

Mathius

Kirby's Adventure (Famicom version)

Nando

T&C surf designs.

I feel like a total dumb ass, the surfing dynamics escape me.

CPTRAVE

Metroid,and I passed the game.

It's been years but I'm pretty sure it was Super Mario Bros.  No matter how many times I've played it its always been great. A true classic
All is well. :)

Played some more JACKAL, but had to turn off NES because my brother called. HE IS FUNNY AS HELL so it was OK. I will play Jackal later.

I love running over humans in Jackal. It sounds sadistic, but it is really satisfying. Nice little touches in this game.

MegaMan 3.  The music alone brings me back.  Has to be the best console music of all time that series.

The last NES game I played was T&C Surf Designs. I freaken love everything about that game! The awesome music, challenging levels and the old school vibe it brings back. I use to love rocking the Town And Country T-Shirts when I was a little dude back in the 80's. Anytime I play that game it just takes me back !!

Finally playing these games I couldn't get my hands on back in 91' !!! Nec fan always !!!

Last week I was playing Kirby's Adventure, the plan is to finish it before the 20th anniversary in May.

I record my sessions using a top loader, but my original NES is still working after almost 25 years and no 72 pin connector change. And I used it heavy in the late 80's and early 90's.

Nowadays, you're really lucky if an X360 survives after 5 years of moderate use.

I still have my original NES from '85. I'm on my third pin and it's dead again. I have over 125 NES carts and no way to play them.  :(

roflmao

I've had the same NES for over 15 years and I've never changed the 72 pin connector.  It's worked pretty well for a solid 10 years but became pretty erratic after that.  I followed the instructions in the YouTube link above a few years ago and it's been working like a champ ever since with every game I thrown at it.
