2/13/2025: Localization News - Cosmic Fantasy 3-4!

Rather earth-shattering news in the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 community: Cosmic Fantasy 3 & 4 has been officially localized to English by Edia 30 years later for the Switch! Hard to believe! I know their script quality is poor given the 1&2 port but still good to see.

I recently ran into someone who has a copy (North American version) and is willing to sell it to me. It is in good condition, small crack on the back of the case, and no poster or manual.

There is a wide range of final sale values on eBay NA for this item. The last two items were $100 apart from each other in final value.

What would you pay for it in this condition? I want to be fair, but I don't want to get ripped off.

Nazi NecroPhile

I wouldn't go past $150.  Mine was just over $100 with manual and poster, but that was years ago.

Expensive as it is, I think $200 is the maximum non gouged value for late TTi releases in my opinion.

I think I paid $180 here on the forum a couple years ago. I don't think it included the poster.

Anyone know if there are any repos floating around out there that I should watch out for, since this has no manual or poster. Is there any definite way to detect a for sure turboduo game from a repo or copy? Is that a stupid question? I only have Japanese Duo games. Never owned a NA duo game.

clackattack

When I was last looking around for it, seems like around 100$ for it loose was common, 160-200 with case & manny. Id say 120-150 for it with case, depending on how badly you want it.

A little off subject, but i recently heard someone somewhere is mass producing fake Snatchers for segaCD. They are being sold off as discs only but apparently the label quality is flawless, but it is on a completely blank disc!
[If it's song and dance you want, song and dance you'll get!]

Bernie

For that game...id pay quite a bit..  More than its worth.

$100 for no manual, no poster, cracked case. Remember you're saving him ebay/paypal fees.

The only repro disc is Sapphire. If you see a SCD game and it looks like a real CD, it is a real CD.

I sold my complete copy to a friend for $150.... this was in April I believe....   I'd say what you're hearing around here is correct... $150 to $200 depending on what all is included etc.  I know it sells for what $300+ on ebay etc but meh...
[Sun 23:29] <Tatsujin> we have hard off, book off, house off, sports off, baby off, clothes off, jerk off, piss off etc

vexcollects

Yeah, with the manual and poster missing I am definitely not willing to pay $300. Even $250 seems way too steep. I don't know what he wants for it yet, but we'll see.

escarioth

ooh, lucky you :)

i want this game so much. if i can spot one id like the price to be around 150$..
depends on qualitu ou have... i guess maximum 200$
i would need some days to think this out

I decided a while ago that $150 is the maximum I'll spend on a video game.  I don't know what I'd do for a copy that wasn't complete.  I'd still like a copy, but I don't think that I'd pay top dollar for it in that condition...

Shadowgate seems to be getting quite a bit of attention as of late.  My favorite was a guy posting in a facebook group that he had to have the game because he loved Shadowgate so much, but he didn't want to pay gauged up prices for it and probably wasn't even going to play it as he didn't have a turbo grafx.  Classy guy.
Current want list:  Bomberman 93

HailingTheThings

I totally want Beyond Shadowgate as loose as possible, that way there's a slight chance it'll like me. Weh Weh Weh... nevermind the "Wehs."

What's so weird about that? I was planning to use my (soon to be) copy of Shadowgate as a coaster for a cup of Sanka that I just haven't been able to put down anywhere. I'm tired of carrying it and I love Shadowgate. Kills 2 birds with one stone.

geise

I sold mine for $65 I believe, but it had no poster and it was back in 2006.  It wasn't one of those "super rare later release" titles..."yet"  Hell I called up GameDude to check with them on what Turbo titles they had around 2008.  They did have Beyond Shadowgate and it was $90 complete.  I would say what others have, that $150-$200 would be what it should go for if it's complete.

BigusSchmuck

I wouldn't pay more than what Gamedude is offering for it.

tggodfrey

I paid 100.00 for mine few years back.  I didnt think it was all that great of a game.
Games currently in play:

one thing to say about the game is that its pretty "unforgiving".  meaning, there are a zillion ways to die and it will let you progress pretty far even if you miss a critical item along the way.  some of the "puzzles" have multiple solutions which keep it fresh too.
the real time battles are a bit stiff, but they mesh well with the overall pace of the game.  i love the atmosphere.  SAVE OFTEN.

Honestly, to answer OP's question, probably around $35 dollars.  Before you jump on me, I know what it's market value is, but that's what I'd personally pay for it.  I was even a big fan of the NES shadowgate (I know it started out on the Mac but the NES is the definitive version for me) but with the change in the game's presentation, and the rep with other Icom Simulations games from the era, I don't think it's deserving of it's price tag (actually rarity aside).  So maybe I'll never get to play it, and that's ok (even my retro backlog is enormous at this point) but I would definitely pick it up if I got a deal.

This thread reminds me, I need to put the poster back in my case. I took it out to scan way back when I covered the game in an episode. I returned the game to the game room the the poster is still in here folded up on the shelf. 10:1 I forget about it again after I submit this post.

Turns out the seller got cold feet at my offer. He thought my offer was fair, but it is far less than he wanted. He said he may just pack his TurboDuo games away again.

I think he is under the impression that the games he had to trade are only going to continue to go up in value. I have to disagree with this theory, especially after the flurry of sports cards collecting in the early 90's and toy collecting in the late 90's proved that values will indeed go down. Probably not for everything, but the idea of infinite growth is kind of weird to me. It just doesn't make sense how people can think that, since history tends to prove that line of thought to be folly. Sure, my games may retain some value, but I really don't rely on the idea that what they are worth now will stay that way. Nor do I think they will continue to climb in value.

He didn't have a Duo either, so he can't play the games he had to trade either. Seems like a waste. Oh well, I guess I have to have something to aim for with game buying. Maybe one day....

escarioth

gee. :-&

some people sure think they're sitting on a freaking gold mine :(
one day they want to sell something and the next,
go look on ebay or whatever, start thinking like its a diamond.

i feel sorry for you. I really hate when someone do this to me.

The seller had a change of heart. I now own Beyond Shadowgate! Super nice guy too. It all worked out.

There is a scratch on the disk, but it ripped fine and played fine, so hopefully it doesn't become an issue somewhere in the game.

Congrats!  You should be fine.  You can always resurface the disc.  Around 93 I bought a scratched all to hell Last Alert.  It would skip and not play music sometimes on my Duo.  I then got it resurfaced and it now plays like a new game.  When I say scratched I mean something like this:

It was in a bundle. So, I figured about $150.

Awwwwww.

As to the buyer's question, I wouldn't pay more than $25 for it. I've got a few hours on the ISO/WAV/CUE image file set and while somewhat interesting, it's a slow/sluggish game - I liked the original NES version better. If I resume my game and manage to beat it once, that'll be the end of it; I can't imagine wanting to play it again.
