Is there any big difference between the R and RX when it comes to reading/playing burnt games? I've heard that the RX laser can be more reliable but was looking for some consensus.

The hardware is supposed to be identical. They're both a safer bet than the regular Duo (which is likely to require a cap replacement), but chances are any of these will need at least a new laser if it's never been replaced.
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Same hardware basically save for the controller, as said above either is a safer bet than a Duo...

same board, different drive mech
1 gear is replaced with a clutch version on the RX to keep it from getting stuck at the outer edge

Interesting, does the laser on the Duo-R ever get stuck when trying to read burnt games?

Personally, I've never had an issue

thesteve

it does but only if the disc or laser has a problem

I had my Duo laser get stuck with a certain Mindrec game (Meteor Blaster I believe). Lets say it wasn't very pleasant.

So one gear difference? I always thought the RX came with a very expensive 6 button controller and a letter 'x' silkscreened on the console.

For most games, 2 button controllers are fine (maybe 3 buttons if you wanted easier Start or Select button or hands-free auto fire on those like slo-mo)  Given the choice, skip  those that has 6 buttons controller to save on money unless you absolutely need matching RX controller for RX console.  Get whichever you can get cheap.

Different color body as well.

The RX pad has a terrible d-pad, so it shouldn't be considered as a pro in decision making. So many consoles for sale don't include the controller they originally shipped with anyway.

I use the Ave 6 pads personally, great controller.

Laseractive is the best for playing burns.  Hard to get stuck when the laser goes out 12".
