Hi, folks.  I wanted to say Happy Birthday PC-Engine in style, so I'm releasing the final version of my game today!

  • Scaling, warping, line scrolling, copper bars, 100s of colours and other gratuitous eye candy
  • Autoscrolling, scaling, and interlacing options for viewing large puzzles more comfortably

Thanks, Chris!  Now, when will the CDs be stamped and ready to ship?

Great program, Chris.

One question. I read the README and you stated that sometime in the distant future you will work on a CD version of the game. Does that mean there is absolutely no chance for you to convert this current version to an ISO for burning in the meantime?

I despise emulators and don't have a flash cart.

ccovell

Sorry, but right now a lot of code & data are intermingled in this 4M ROM.  For the CD release I'll have to separate the sections of the game into two halves for the 2M limit of the SCD memory.  That'll take a bit of time, not to mention the fact that I want some nice CD music in my game.

I'll be busy packing, moving in December, and changing work locations in January and possibly into February, so I'll be too busy to do any PCE development from this point until sometime next year.  That's one reason why I'm releasing my game now.  Isn't this yet one more reason to get yourself a PCE flash card sooner rather than later?   :D

CrackTiger

Wow the extra options are a really nice addition to a solid game. Its nice to have sfx too (I can play my own music in the background in the meantime). =D>

Are those flying balls animated or actually scaling? That Select screen must use some clever programming tricks since most of it is just the background layer. :)
Justin the Not-So-Cheery Black/Hack/CrackTiger helped Joshua Jackass, Andrew/Arkhan Dildovich and the DildoPhiles destroy 2 PC Engine groups: one by Aaron Lambert on Facebook, then the other by Aaron Nanto!!! Him and PCE Aarons don't have a good track record together! Both times he blamed the Aarons and their staff in a "Look-what-you-made-us-do?!" manner, never himself nor his deranged/destructive/doxxing toxic turbo troll gang which he covers up for under the "community" euphemism!

Arjak

I downloaded the game, and it's great! Very nicely done. My only complaint is (obviously) the lack of music. I can't wait for the CD version!

How very excellent!

Thanks dude!

Would you ask a magician all his tricks too??    [-X

The balls scale to different sizes through animation, and change their positions via different horizontal & vertical sine waves.  Circular motion can easily be made through the use of sine waves in each dimension, if any of you remember it from high school math class.

The "copper bar" effect is done the same way as most game systems, through BG colour changing each scanline.

Keranu

Thanks so much for releasing this! It's so finely made and so addicting - congratulations! The sound effects are really well made, how did you make them?

Two slight complaints: 1. ) Would be nice if you could skip through some scenes like the title screen, level completed screen, and game over screen. 2. ) The adjust scroll has the button backgrounds so if you were to scroll the screen to the right, you have to press left. Not sure if that was the intended design or not, but I think the proper directions would've felt better, even though this is very minor anyways.

I wish I had a way to play this (not too keen on emulation unless I need it for screen grabs, etc).

They're from the sound routines of a ripped game.  Turbo sound tools are still basic and that doesn't look set to change any time soon.

What, are you trying to do a speedrun or something?

You know, comments like these are the reason I released a demo of my game back in May 2006: so that comments could be made and considered before the FINAL release!

At any rate, the scroll settings are what seemed natural to me (press left to move the board left).  As for not skipping the title, game over etc fast enough: some things are meant to be witnessed in full.  :D Like the punishment for having gotten a game over!   :D

The Neoflash can transfer games via USB?   Sweet!  Too bad I don't see a price for it (shitty page).

You're the man, Chris, definitely ;)

Finally got around to downloading this, great job!  I haven't played a picross game in years but this has me hooked again. :D

Consider me first in line for the disk release.

Keranu

I've been playing this game nonstop. I've almost beaten all the levels!

OK I finally played this, but I really don't understand it.  I'm not sure what the "numerical hints" are supposed to mean.  I guess it is a little too "high brow" for me.  Graphics are great, but I don't like newspaper puzzles.  Try an action game next!

Keranu

Picross games take awhile to learn. Once you get the hang of it, they're really addicting.

ya, it was hard for me at first too ( it was my first picross game  ). You'll get the hang of it Joe, well if you feel like, haha.

Tongueman's Logic is most definitely not hard to learn.  Proof: I figured it out within five minutes, and I'm only a few rungs up the IQ ladder from rice pudding.  The hints are the number of filled pixels in a row before at least one unfilled pixel.

I know that this was supposed to be a final release, but I'll make some suggestions anyway.

1.  Scrolling shouldn't have to be turned on/off for every puzzle seperately.
2.  It'd be nice if the number hints would scroll on top of the puzzle and remain on screen for the large puzzles.  It's a pain in the butt to keep scrolling back and forth when working on the far right or bottom edges.
3.  I don't know if adding mouse support is overly difficult or even doable, but it would be fantastic in this type of game (for the fourteen people that own PCE mice).
4.  Keep the awesomeness coming - I'm loving it!

It was my first picross game too!  I played Mario Picross for Gameboy recently and it doesn't even compare.

Hopefully our suggestions will be taken into consideration once a CD verison is made. Your first suggestion was something on my mind too.

I also have a few other suggestions. One is for the puzzle's themes to be organized. For example, there seems to be a lot of puzzles throughout different levels that seem to rely on a theme, like food items. It would be cool if all of the food item puzzles were listed on one line of stages, while another line features a different them. I'm not sure if there is enough puzzles for each kind of theme to make this possible for all of the levels, but it would be cool nonetheless. Another suggestion is to include a little graphic of the puzzle somewhere on the screen after you solved it so you can go back and look at it again. I'd also suggest to have each level use up all 50 stages, but I know that's pushing it :P .

Thanks for the suggestions.  They will be duly ignored.

Actually, I didn't intentionally un-group the "food" or "game character" puzzles; I played through each puzzle and judged their difficulty, then organized them based on that.  Hopefully every puzzle of each size should start out easy and then get progressively more difficult (or time-consuming).

Quote from: Joe Redifer on 11/30/2007, 09:03 PMThe game also needs more nudity.
Jeez, Tongueman wears nothing but a smile during the whole game; what more do you want??!?

Well if you're going to make a CD version someday anyways, may as well take suggestions to make the best of it. It's your game though, so do whatever you want.

Yeah I seemed to have notice that the puzzles do tend to get harder, good point.

I finally got around to trying this out and DAMN.  Fantastic effort Chris.  I love picross (my favorite was Picture Puzzle on the Neo Geo Pocket for a long time).  Very nice effort with all the slick video effects.  You see someone put together a great little game like this with such attention to detail and you wonder what the hell happened with games like Energy and The Kung Fu.

way to go, ccovell!  thanks for keeping the pc-e flames burning strong, good sir.

i can't seem to find a way to snatch up one of those super pc-e flash devices you linked to (second link), so i guess it's time for me to cave and buy up a magic engine license.

peace!

Just wanted to add that I've been addicted to this game over the past few weeks so a big THANK YOU from me as well. Your hard work is appreciated!
