Why do people hate Virtual Hydlide for Sega Saturn?

Everybody seems to rag on this game, but I think it looks awesome!

Check this video for evidence:

In this game, we have:

• Awesome use of sprites and scaling!
• Totally generic fantasy world, which may turn off some but I love generic fantasy worlds!
• Despite it being totally generic, YOU GET TO FIGHT TREES! FUCKING TREES! 
• Third person hack and slash, making it pretty much like Zelda.
• The soundtrack samples, if my ears don't fail me, were provided by an E-MU Proteus/2 orchestral synth module (or technically the Emulator III orchestra library).
• SCORE! How many RPGs, let alone GAMES these days have a score counter?

And in the other video, we see that this game has SLIMES! SLIMES! So yeah, VH's framerate may suck, but if you don't want this game, I will gladly buy it from you. I DIG THIS GAME.


EDIT: APPARENTLY THIS GAME HAS A RANDOM LEVEL GENERATOR! I have never played this game before, but it is my duty to give it a 10/10.

I got suckered into buying this game for the same reasons.  It looked like a great game.. especially back
in the day.  I wanted to throw up after playing it for an hour.  And when I say "playing" what I really
mean is forcing myself to hang in there.

Buy the game.. it's cheap.  You'll see.

Yea it simply wasn't fun.Even the most die hard Saturn collectors will admit this was a failure. I had it and just couldn't enjoy it. Too many problems made it cumbersome and not enjoyable.

It looked like shit to me at the time...and it looked like shit when I actually got to play it. I guess if you like tedious ugly garbage like King's Field you might like it, but as far as launch/near launch titles go I was much more impressed with Blue Seed, Shin Shinobi-den, and Panzer, and now that the entire Saturn library is out, I'd say there are several dozen RPGs that are better.

Shin Shinobi-den is still awesome even now. The amount of crisp sprites and details keep it being top notch,as well as the over all attack selection. Im glad I own this one for sure. I never get tired of it. Easily the best of the Shinobi titles.

Kits don't listen to these heathens,  The game is actually pretty cool!

I played the hell out of it when it first came out, as I am a HUGE fan of the NES Hydlide game.  I still own the game today, and still pick it up once and every again to play it. 

Nintendo totally stole MANY MANY ideas from this classic to make Zelda Ocarina for the N64!!!!


Get it, its not that bad, and HELL you can even have FUN with it!!

Never played it. I've steered clear from it b/c of the reviews said it was garbage bin game. Though I'm thinking playing it for once, but not until I finish Hydlide 3.

People hate on the 3DO because it was expensive back in the day.. unobtainable to the average person.  And the library sucked balls.  The games
that were worth playing on the 3DO could be found on other systems... and always played better.

Personally I do like the 3DO.  Especially since it's cheap now.

Yeah, I waited until the day when Best Buy had the FZ10 for I think $90, & then most games were between $2-$10.  And games that weren't there before, came in, probably shipped over from other Best Buys!  Though, I do remember the day, that I saw a label for Lucienne's Quest I think it was for $2, but, somebody had already bought the game dammit!  Oh well, I have 2 copies now, but, it would've been nice to buy it brand new!

I actually beat it, it wasn't that bad and it's really short.  The frame rate and goofy looking main character were the only things that bugged me, but I can stand bad frame rates if I'm having fun, plus the FMV sequences are so awful they're worth seeing.  I don't know about playing it now though, I wouldn't have the patience probably unless I was really in a retro mood.  Keep in mind there are some mildly cool parts later in the game with a huge crystal castle, its not all ugly green landscapes and caves.

And for the record, the King's Field series is fucking awesome.
